Establishing a Permanent Food Pantry in a Pediatric Emergency Department.

Childhood food insecurity is associated with adverse health outcomes. Food pantries housed within healthcare facilities have the potential to reduce childhood food insecurity. An interdisciplinary team established a permanent food pantry in the pediatric emergency department of a metropolitan children's hospital. Members of the team included attending and resident physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, patient care technicians, a volunteer coordinator, Prevention and Wellness staff, and environmental services staff. The development process, formative evaluation, and impact of the pantry duri

Is meal order timing and flexibility key to improving patient satisfaction with hospital foodservice?

AIM: The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate and compare patient foodservice (FS) satisfaction using a validated tool and consistent methodology in an acute health service for four different FS models as the organisation transitioned through traditional model (TM), choice at point of service (CaPOS), bedside menu ordering systems (BMOS) and room service (RS) from 2013 to 2016. METHODS: Patient satisfaction data were collected using the Acute Care Hospital Foodservice Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire. For the purposes of this study, patients' rating of their overall experience

A Scoping Review of Choice Architecture to Promote Healthy Nutrition in Health and Care Settings.

INTRODUCTION: Poor diets are a remediable risk factor for non-communicable diseases. Sickness absence rates for national health service (NHS) staff are substantially higher than the public sector average (5.6% vs. 3.6%). Hospital inpatients are often being treated for the downstream consequences of poor diets. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses support national health recommendations for plant-based diets that emphasise consumption of varied whole plant-source foods with minimal consumption of animal products. These diets are increasingly recognised as compatible with planetary health and ar

[Food-related fungal infection risk in agranulocytosis. Mycological control of 273 food items offered to patients hospitalized in sterile units].

In sterile hospital units filamentous fungal infections are an unacceptable risk in patients with prolonged agranulocytosis. The occurrence of 3 successive cases in the Sterile unit of University Hospital of Grenoble prompted us to investigate in all elements of sterile unit, and notably food-processing. Two cooked rice dishes given to these patients were found to contain a substantial amount of Aspergillus fumigatus and were probably responsible for these infections. A more detailed study was carried out to evaluate the degree of food contamination by fungi in sterile unit. The study included

The Role and Meaning of Hospital Food for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Patients.

AIM: This study explored the perceptions of former Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) hospital patients and carers regarding the role and meaning of hospital food during hospitalisation and recovery. METHODS: Using a descriptive qualitative design guided by a social constructionist approach, four focus groups (n = 28) were conducted with participants from Asian, Mediterranean, Arabic, and Indian Subcontinent communities at a major Australian metropolitan health service. Purposively recruited participants included former inpatients or caregivers who discussed their experiences in fac

The environmental impact of tray-line packaging waste at an Australian tertiary hospital: Retrospective observational study.

AIMS: To quantify the volume of tray-line packaging waste at an Australian metropolitan tertiary hospital and explore current disposal methods and their environmental impact. METHODS: The patient menu ordering system was used to retrospectively quantify packaged menu items served on the tray-line from March 2023 to March 2024, with some of the data extrapolated from a 3-month period to provide an estimate of 12-month quantities. The packaged weight of all menu items was multiplied by the number of times they were plated and served to patients. Carbon emissions (expressed as carbon equivalents

Supporting Health Care Staff With Family Meals During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Family meals provide a unique opportunity for families to eat well and engage positively with each other. In response to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic, a new initiative to support health care staff to share healthy meals with their families was developed. At a hospital in Queensland, Australia, dietetic staff collaborated with the on-site food service retailer to develop and offer a range of hot meals that staff could take home for their families at the end of their day. The meals were nutritious, reasonably priced, and designed to feed a family o

Characterization of Escherichia coli isolates from healthy food handlers in hospital.

Recent studies have reported that Escherichia coli in fecal samples of healthy humans could also serve as important reservoirs of drug-resistant bacteria. Limited data are available for E. coli-resistant profiles of healthy food handlers in hospitals who provide food service to inpatients and hospital staffs. E. coli isolates were recovered from hospital healthy food handlers, and one random selected isolate from each food handler was subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing, phylogenetic typing, and screening for antimicrobial-resistant mechanisms by polymerase chain reaction amplifi

Outcomes and Factors Associated With Prehospital Treatment of Pediatric Anaphylaxis.

OBJECTIVE: Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening reaction requiring prompt treatment with intramuscular epinephrine (EPI). We sought to describe presenting features of pediatric anaphylaxis and compare patient characteristics and outcomes of children treated with prehospital EPI with those untreated. METHODS: We abstracted data from emergency department (ED) records for children meeting the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Disease criteria for anaphylaxis (2015-2017) in one tertiary care children's hospital. We analyzed associations between patient characteristics and outcom

Management of anaphylaxis after pre-hospital epinephrine use in children with food-induced anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Previous guidelines recommend prompt epinephrine administration, followed by observation in the emergency department (ED). The need for transfer in all cases of anaphylaxis has recently been challenged. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the need for additional ED treatment among children with anaphylaxis who received prehospital epinephrine. METHODS: Between 2011 and 2023, data were collected on symptoms, triggers, comorbidities, and prehospital and in-hospital management from children (<18 years) with food-induced anaphylaxis who received at least 1 dose of prehospital epinephrine presenti

Identification of Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Typhimurium, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, and Clostridium perfringens in hospital food.

Despite conducting studies to investigate food contamination in hospitals in different parts of Iran in recent years, there have been no reliable studies to identify Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Typhimurium, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, and Clostridium perfringens in hospital food in Mashhad. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating some major foodborne pathogens in hospital food. In this study, 360 food samples were randomly selected from 12 different menus from 13 hospitals affiliated with Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran. Microbial

Examining supervised meals in patients with restrictive eating disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Anorexia nervosa is a chronic, life-threatening illness affecting adolescents with increasing incidence. Previous research has demonstrated that, although weight gain is a key to medical stabilization, there is wide and significant variability in treatment practices. Meal supervision in hospitalized patients involves the use of clinical staff as active and supportive observers during meal time. No studies to date have examined the effects of meal supervision in medically hospitalized patients with anorexia nervosa. The primary aim of this study was to examine the effect of meal sup

Evidence of dietary copper and zinc deficiencies.

The mean daily amounts of copper and zinc found in hospital diets by atomic absorption spectrometry were 0.76 and 9.4 mg, respectively. Comparison of these diets with published data showed median daily amounts of copper and zinc to be 0.78 and 12.0 mg, respectively, for 20 diets made from conventional foods. These amounts of copper and zinc are less than the 2 mg of copper and 13 mg of zinc thought to be required daily by adults. Hospital diets and perhaps diets in general seem to be low in copper and zinc; the amounts of copper are lower than those of zinc in comparison with respective requir

Examining the relationship between food insecurity and causes of injury in Canadian adults and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity, as an indicator of socioeconomic disadvantages and a determinant of health, may be associated with injury by increasing risk exposure and hampering risk mitigation. We examined the association between food insecurity and common causes of injury in the general population. METHODS: Linking the Canadian Community Health Survey 2005-2017 to National Ambulatory Care Reporting System 2003-2017, this retrospective cohort study estimated incidence of injury-related emergency department (ED) visits by food insecurity status among 212,300 individuals 12 years and above in t

The common triggers of urticaria in children admitted to the pediatric emergency room.

BACKGROUND: Urticaria frequently causes pediatric emergency department (PED) admissions. Children with urticaria may unnecessarily avoid suspected allergens. We aimed to investigate the possible and exact triggers of urticaria in children admitted to the PED. METHODS: Medical records of children admitted to the PED within a 1-year period were evaluated for the International Classification of Diseases 10 (ICD-10) L50 urticaria code, noting symptoms, and possible triggers of urticaria. We performed telephone interviews to complete the missing data and further diagnostic tests for IgE-mediated a
