Evaluating the impact of a full-service mobile food market on food security, diet quality and food purchases: a cluster randomised trial protocol and design paper.

INTRODUCTION: Mobile food markets may help to mitigate diet-related and weight-related inequities by bringing low-cost, nutritious food directly to underserved populations. By stocking foods to meet a range of dietary needs, full-service mobile markets may improve multiple aspects of diet, food security and fruit and vegetable procurement with a convenient one-stop shop. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This cluster randomised trial is evaluating the impact of a full-service mobile market, the Twin Cities Mobile Market (TCMM). The TCMM sells staple foods at affordable prices from a retrofitted bus that

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Intestinal Parasites among Food Handlers Working in Food Service Establishments in Northwest Ethiopia, 2022.

BACKGROUND: As in most of African countries, intestinal parasites have been widely distributed in Ethiopia and are among the 10 top causes of morbidity and mortality nationwide. Statistics for food-borne illness in various industrialized countries show that up to 60% of cases may be caused by poor food handling techniques and by contaminated food served in food service establishments. Epidemiological information on the prevalence of various intestinal parasitic infections in different regions/localities is a prerequisite to develop appropriate strategies. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determ

Survival of Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus in mexican red salsa in a food service setting.

Mexican red salsa is one of the most common side dishes in Mexican cuisine. According to data on foodborne illnesses collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, salsa was associated with 70 foodborne illness outbreaks between 1990 and 2006. Salsa ingredients such as tomatoes, cilantro, and onions often have been implicated in foodborne illness outbreaks. Mexican-style restaurants commonly prepare a large batch of red salsa, store it at refrigeration temperatures, and then serve it at room temperature. Salmonella is one of the top etiologies in foodborne illness outbreaks assoc

Serving high-risk foods in a high-risk setting: survey of hospital food service practices after an outbreak of listeriosis in a hospital.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prepared ready-to-eat salads and ready-to-eat delicatessen-style meats present a high risk for Listeria contamination. Because no foodborne illness risk management guidelines exist specifically for US hospitals, a survey of New York City (NYC) hospitals was conducted to characterize policies and practices after a listeriosis outbreak occurred in a NYC hospital. METHODS: From August through October 2008, a listeriosis outbreak in a NYC hospital was investigated. From February through April 2009, NYC's 61 acute-care hospitals were asked to participate in a telephone s

Understanding factors affecting engagement with food-related services in areas of deprivation: A mixed-methods approach.

Poor dietary health is disproportionately higher in low-income adults, who often face multiple barriers to accessing affordable, nutritious food. Food-related services aim to address these challenges, but engagement remains inconsistent. Understanding the drivers of (non)engagement is critical to improving service design and delivery. This mixed-methods study explored factors influencing engagement with food-related services among low-income adults living in deprived areas. A cross-sectional survey (n = 77) measured capability, opportunity, and motivation to engage with services using the COM-

Effect of COVID-19 on Pet Food Bank Servicing: Quantifying Numbers of Clients Serviced in the Vancouver Downtown Eastside, British Columbia, Canada.

Previous research has focused on the benefits and difficulties of pet ownership in people, who are experiencing homelessness. However, many pet services, such as pet food banks, serve a more varied population of people. Furthermore, the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic has not been documented within the context of pet food banks. Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES) population comprises a notable proportion of the city's overall population and has a high density of people who are experiencing financial hardships, but some of whom do not always experience homelessness. The purpose of this study

An outbreak of Norwalk-like viral gastroenteritis in a frequently penalized food service operation: a case for mandatory training of food handlers in safety and hygiene.

In 1999, in Toledo, Ohio, an outbreak of gastroenteritis occurred among people who had attended a Christmas dinner banquet and had eaten food prepared by a local caterer. Overall, 93 of the 137 attendees (67.9 percent) reported illness. Eight sought medical care, and one was hospitalized. Case-control studies revealed that the illness was associated with eating tossed salad (odds ratio [OR] = 2.5, 95 percent confidence interval [CI] = 1.02-6.26). Eleven of 12 stool specimens that were taken from ill people tested positive for a Norwalk-like virus (NLV) but were negative for E. coli O157:H7, Sa
