We ranked seven foodborne pathogens in Denmark on the basis of their health and economic impact on society in 2019. We estimated burden of disease of infections with Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), Yersinia enterocolitica, Listeria monocytogenes, norovirus, and hepatitis A virus in terms of incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALY), and economic burden in terms of direct and indirect health costs. These seven pathogens accounted for 268,372 cases, 98 deaths, and 3121 DALYs, and led to a total expenditure of 434 million Euro

Surveillance data from 1968 to 1977 indicate that meat and poultry and products made from them were vehicles in over 50% of reported outbreaks of foodborne disease. The three most commonly identified vehicles were ham, turkey and roast beef. Ground (cooked) beef, pork, sausage and chicken were also frequently reported as vehicles. These foods were mishandled to the extent that outbreaks resulted in foodservice establishments (65%), in homes (31%) and in processing plants (4%). The most frequently identified factors that contributed to these outbreaks were improper cooling of cooked foods (48%)

Factors that contributed to foodborne outbreaks that were reported in the U.S. from 1973-1976 are identified and categorized by disease and by locale in which incriminated foods were mishandled. Data from the same years are tallied separately and combined with data from the years 1961-1972. Inadequate cooling was associated with most foodborne outbreaks, with many bacterial foodborne diseases (such as salmonellosis, staphylococcal food poisoning, and Clostridium perfringens gastroenteritis), and frequently with outbreaks that originated from foods prepared in foodservice establishments and hom

Zoonoses are diseases transmitted from animals to humans, posing a great threat to the health and life of people all over the world. According to WHO estimations, 600 million cases of diseases caused by contaminated food were noted in 2010, including almost 350 million caused by pathogenic bacteria. Campylobacter, Salmonella, as well as Yersinia enterocolitica and Listeria monocytogenes may dwell in livestock (poultry, cattle, and swine) but are also found in wild animals, pets, fish, and rodents. Animals, often being asymptomatic carriers of pathogens, excrete them with faeces, thus deliverin

Social cost-benefit analysis (SCBA) can be used to evaluate the benefit to society as a whole of a particular intervention. Describing preliminary steps of an SCBA for two foodborne parasitic diseases, echinococcosis and cryptosporidiosis, indicates where data are needed in order to identify those interventions of greatest benefit.

BACKGROUND: Foodborne disease outbreaks are one of the main health problems globally, having an extensive impact on human welfare. The World Health Organization considers them as the main cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries, and responsible for high levels of loss of productivity in developed countries.
AIM: To describe the epidemiology of foodborne disease outbreaks according to data contained in an automated surveillance system.
METHOD: Descriptive observational study of notified outbreaks from the surveillance system, between 2005 and 2010 in Chile. The information wa

In 2012, WHO/FAO ranked 24 foodborne parasites (FBP) using multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) to provide risk assessors with a basis for prioritising control of highly ranked FBP on the global level. One conclusion was that ranking may differ substantially per region. In Europe, the same methodology was used to rank FBP of relevance for Europe. Of the 24 FBP, the top-five prioritised FBP were identified for Europe as Echinococcus multilocularis, Toxoplasma gondii, Trichinella spiralis, E. granulosus, and Cryptosporidium spp., all of which are zoonotic. The objective of the present study wa

Bacterial toxins are food safety hazards causing about 10% of all reported foodborne outbreaks in Europe. Pertinent to Gram-positive pathogens, the most relevant toxins are emetic toxin and diarrheal enterotoxins of Bacillus cereus, neurotoxins of Clostridium botulinum, enterotoxin of Clostridium perfringens, and a family of enterotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus and some other staphylococci. These toxins are the most important virulence factors of respective foodborne pathogens and a primary cause of the related foodborne diseases. They are proteins or peptides that differ from each o

BACKGROUND: Climate change could increase the number of regions affected by meteorologic disasters. Meteorologic disasters can increase the risk of infectious disease outbreaks, including waterborne and foodborne diseases. Although many outbreaks of waterborne diseases after single disasters have been analyzed, there have not been sufficient studies reporting comprehensive analyses of cases occurring during long-term surveillance after multiple disasters, which could provide evidence of whether meteorologic disasters cause infectious disease outbreaks.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess t

The purpose of this study was to evaluate knowledge, attitudes, and behavior concerning foodborne diseases and food safety issues among food handlers in Italy. Face-to-face interviews were conducted within a random sample using a structured questionnaire. Of the 411 food handlers responding, 48.7% knew the main foodborne pathogens (Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae or other Vibrio spp., Clostridium botulinum, hepatitis A virus), and this knowledge was significantly greater among those with a higher education level, in practice from a longer period of time, and who had att

BACKGROUND: Foodborne diseases are a major source of concern in USA. These diseases are a burden on public health and significantly contribute to the cost of health care. There is an urgent need to understand the contributing factors for such outbreaks, especially in Mississippi (MS), an agricultural state with low socioeconomic status.
METHODS: Secondary data for the current study were obtained from the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) Epidemiology department for the study period 2010-2018. Data were for individuals with reported foodborne diseases cases. The data were analyzed

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Marine toxins cause most of the noninfectious outbreaks reported to CDC's Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System (FDOSS) each year. Certain marine toxins are produced by algae that accumulate in aquatic animals through the food chain, whereas others appear as a result of improper food storage and are therefore preventable. Overgrowths of toxin-producing algae (harmful algal blooms) have occurred on both U.S. coasts; the historical geographic range for some species (e.g., Gambierdiscus in tropical and subtropical regions) have expanded. Marine toxins that cause foodbo

To inform risk management decisions on control, prevention and surveillance of foodborne disease, the disease burden of foodborne pathogens is estimated using Disability Adjusted Life Years as a summary metric of public health. Fourteen pathogens that can be transmitted by food are included in the study (four infectious bacteria, three toxin-producing bacteria, four viruses and three protozoa). Data represent the burden in the Netherlands in 2009. The incidence of community-acquired non-consulting cases, patients consulting their general practitioner, those admitted to hospital, as well as the

The first outbreaks of Norwalk virus gastroenteritis in Minnesota were confirmed in 1982. Since then, Norwalk-like caliciviruses have been recognized to be the most common cause of foodborne disease outbreaks, accounting for 41% of all confirmed foodborne outbreaks in Minnesota from 1981-1998. Although laboratory confirmation of caliciviruses in stool samples was not attempted in most of these outbreaks, all conformed to epidemiologic criteria for defining outbreaks of Norwalk virus. Since 1996, the availability of polymerase chain reaction testing at the Minnesota Department of Health has all

The acute effects of foodborne disease are sometimes not the end of the illness. Several significant foodborne pathogens are capable of triggering chronic disease, and even permanent tissue or organ destruction, probably via immune mechanisms. Arthritis, septic and reactive, inflammatory bowel disease, haemolytic uraemic syndrome, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and possible several autoimmune disorders can be triggered by foodborne pathogens or their toxins. Research is needed to more fully understand the mechanisms by which the immune system is inappropriately activated by these common foodborne di

OBJECTIVE: To apply a multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique to detect Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and Yersinia enterocolitica as a diagnostic support tool for the surveillance of foodborne disease outbreaks.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Molecular methodology was applied on clinical samples taken from individuals who were associated with foodborne disease outbreaks in two departments of Colombia. The results were compared with the data obtained by conventional culture methodology. In addition, the clonal relation of the isolations was evaluated using the Pulsed F
