BackgroundRecent advancements in medical imaging technology have significantly increased the prevalence of automatic and semi-automatic segmentation techniques for foot bones, offering promising potential for improving diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. However, a critical challenge remains the scarcity of literature on the reliability and validation of these automated systems, underscoring the need for comprehensive studies to ensure their trustworthiness in clinical practice.PurposeTo implement a fully automated foot bone segmentation method processed exclusively using convolutional neurona

A set of lesions are re-described and new pathological findings in foot bones of Panochthus sp. (Xenarthra, Cingulata) are presented. The material reexamined in fact presents enthesiophytes instead of osteoartrithis, as previously interpreted. Furthermore, Calcium Pyrophosphate Deposition Disease (CPPD) was observed, a lesion absent in previous report. CPPD also was found in another set of foot bones and it was associated with a congenital fusion of two sesamoids. The material studied were collected in two natural tank deposits, one in Paraíba (material reexamined) and other in Rio Grande do N

In The Netherlands, about 50% of all amputations of the lower limb are toes and forefoot amputations. Traumata of toes and mid-foot are rare. Preservation of the foot is the primary goal for treatment. Crush injuries of the foot may be associated with prolonged morbidity. This case study presents an insole solution for the solitary first phalangeal bone after amputation of the phalangeal bones II - V. The normal adaptation for forefoot amputations is stiffening of the sole of the shoe and a rocker bar to improve the toe off phase with load reduction of the forefoot. Because the patient had to

Skeletal tuberculosis constitutes 1% to 3% of extrapulmonary cases and involvement of foot bones is rare. Lack of awareness and a confusing clinical and radiological picture often lead to a delay in diagnosis. We reviewed 23 feet seen over a 3.5-year period. Most cases were children or young adults less than 40 years of age; isolated bony involvement was seen in 10 feet, with the calcaneus being involved in five cases. Articular involvement at presentation was seen in 13 cases and these cases had significantly higher delays in diagnosis. Twenty cases responded to antitubercular therapy alone w

Accessory bones are generally considered to be developmental anomalies consisting of unfused ossification centers. These ossicles, which have no clearly defined function, can become infected and dislocated and can also be confused with avulsion fractures. In this study, we aimed to determine the morphometric characteristics and frequency of accessory bones in the foot. Foot computed tomography (CT) images (187 right, 213 left) of 400 individuals (239 men and 161 women) aged 18-86 years who underwent foot CT scans for various reasons were retrospectively reviewed. The surface area and the long

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a locally aggressive primary bone neoplasm constituted by proliferating mononuclear spindle cells, among which there are numerous macrophages and evenly distributed large multinucleated osteoclast-like giant cells that may undergo malignant transformation. It corresponds to 5% of all primary neoplasias of the bone. It is more common in females, with an incidence between 20 and 45 years. It has a major preference for the epiphysis of the long bones. Approximately 3-4% of all GCTs are found in the small bones of the hands and feet. GCT in younger p

Surgical bone reconstructive procedures of the foot and ankle in diabetic patients must be considered when performing evaluation of a diabetic foot for patients with preulcerative lesions and preexisting wounds. Preventive deformity correction can reduce the potential risk of ulceration, infection, and possible amputation in a patient with an at-risk foot type. It can also expedite wound healing and prevent further breakdown in a patient with lower extremity ulcerations. This article discusses different types of surgical bone reconstructive procedures as preventive and prophylactic deformity c

This study introduces a new technique to measure bone size and shape. A three-dimensional laser scan was taken of the talus, navicular, medial cuneiform, and first metatarsal from 107 skeletons of known age and sex. The bones were analyzed for differences in bone morphology between the sexes and the ability of each bone to contribute to the adducted position of the first metatarsal. Linear measurements showed that male bones were larger than female bones. Measurements of articular surfaces suggested that female bones had the potential for more movement to occur in the direction of adduction, p

AIMS: It is proposed that diabetic neuropathy may affect peripheral bone. Direct innervation of bone as well as neural control over its vascular supply and muscular influences may be affected by diabetes-induced peripheral neuropathies. Associated changes to bone may contribute to the occurrence of foot bone pathology in this population. This systematic review aims to examine the literature related to the effect of diabetic neuropathy on foot bones.
METHODS: Studies examining relationships between neuropathy and indicators of bone health (e.g. bone mineral density) in populations with diabete

Giant cell tumor of the bone (GCTB) affecting foot and ankle is rare, and the literature available on their clinical behavior and reconstructive options is scarce. Many authors consider these sites a special subset with high rates of local recurrence. Eighteen patients with GCTB of foot and ankle were treated from (March 2014 to February 2020). Extended curettage was offered wherever feasible. Twelve patients underwent extended curettage, three underwent resection and reconstruction, one patient had ray amputation, one had below knee amputation. One patient with multifocal disease was treated

Giant cell tumor (GCT) of the bone is a benign primary bone tumor most often treated with intralesional surgery. Most cases occur around the knee; however, rarely, GCT of bone can occur in the foot and ankle. Limited data exist about the outcomes after treatment of GCT in this location. We retrospectively reviewed an orthopedic oncology database from 1970 to 2010 for cases of GCT of the bone, specifically within the foot and ankle bones. After exclusionary criteria were applied, a total of 19 disease sites in 18 patients were included for analysis. Of the 19 disease sites, 10 recurred. Patient

This report describes the construction and evaluation of an ankle-foot prosthesis using human cadaveric bones as the endoskeleton inside a fiber-reinforced vulcanized rubber shell. Cadaveric bones and exhumed skeletal bones were used. Three designs were fabricated, subjected to radiographic evaluation, and underwent 4-week field trials of normal daily use by a unilateral below-knee amputee. The rubber shell retained the position of the bones, permitted movements at the joints in various stages of the stance phase, and restored the bones to their neutral position when the foot was unloaded. Bone stress injuries (BSIs) are a frequent finding in athletes, particularly of the foot and ankle. A BSI is caused by recurring microtrauma to the cortical or trabecular bone exceeding the repair capacity of normal bone. The most frequent fractures at the ankle are low risk, characterized by a low risk for nonunion. These include the posteromedial tibia, the calcaneus, and the metatarsal diaphysis. High-risk stress fractures have a higher risk for nonunion and need more aggressive treatment. Examples are the medial malleolus, navicular bone, and the base of the second and fifth metatarsal bon

Bone tumors are relatively rare in the foot and ankle region. Many of them present as cystic lesions on plain films. Due to the relative rarity of these lesions and the complex anatomy of the foot and ankle region, identification of such lesions is often delayed or they get misdiagnosed and mismanaged. This review discusses the most common cystic tumors of the foot and ankle including their radiographic features and principles of management.

We report on 554 bone tumors and tumor-like lesions of the foot, which have been diagnosed within the period from 1945-1985 in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, in the Surgical and Orthopedic Departments and in the Division of Pathology of Bone Tumors of the University of Freiburg. Schajowicz' WHO classification criteria for bone tumors were used. Morphological aspects, clinical symptoms and pattern of distribution differ widely from lesions of other skeletal regions. Bone tumors of the foot are much more frequently associated with pain caused by the special anatomy of the foot. Malignan

OBJECTIVE: Limb-salvage following resection of bone sarcomas of the foot are challenging due to the complicated anatomy, adjacent neurovascular structures and few durable reconstruction options.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 50 patients with primary malignant bone sarcoma of the foot who underwent surgery including chondrosarcoma (n = 23), Ewing's sarcoma (n = 14) and osteosarcoma (n = 13).
RESULTS: Median follow-up was 68 months. The primary sites were metatarsal (n = 18), phalanges (n = 15), calcaneus (n = 13) and others (n = 4). The 5-year disease-specific survivals were 100, 83 an

This paper reports the results of bone scans on 78 painful feet. Scanning helped in the diagnosis of persistent foot pain following injury and it enabled stress fractures, fractures of the sesamoids and subtalar arthritis to be diagnosed earlier. It reliably excluded bone infection and was useful as a screening test when radiographs were normal.
