Congenital metatarsus varus may be regarded as a deformity caused by a dislocation and in that respect is similar to congenital clubfoot and vertical talus but not to calcaneovalgus. The dislocation causes adaptive bone changes as well as secondary contracture of the soft tissues. That the dislocation in the forepart of the foot may occur in a maximally dorsiflexed foot also may explain the valgus position of the hindfoot. The secondary changes in bone and soft tissue may explain the lack of spontaneous recovery and the difficulties in effecting correction in severe cases. It is still not poss

Congenital deformities of the foot significantly challenge the mobility and quality of life of affected individuals. While surgical interventions are common, rehabilitation protocols tailored to address the specific needs of adults with congenital foot deformities are less explored. This case series aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a specialized foot rehabilitation protocol in improving functional outcomes and quality of life in adults with congenital foot deformities. A series of cases involving adults diagnosed with congenital foot deformities were enrolled in a structured rehabilitatio

In the last decade treatment of foot deformities has changed from extensive surgery to casting and minimally invasive surgery. The Ponseti method has become the most preferred treatment for clubfoot deformities and early evaluations showed promising results. Mid-term results for idiopathic clubfoot revealed the need for additional surgery by anterior tibial tendon transfer in 11-32% of cases depending on the duration of bracing. Anterior tibial tendon transfer is the most important surgical procedure for relapses in the Ponseti concept. Casting, recasting in cases of relapses, bracing and ante

INTRODUCTION: Congenital peripheral constriction ring originating from soft tissues of the leg that is characterized with compression in the soft tissue usually involving the deep fascia surrounding the leg at the time of birth is occasionally observed in lower extremity. At the region of the constriction, fractures of tibia and fibula and foot deformities like clubfoot can be observed.
CASE PRESENTATION: In our report, 6-month and 8-month old infants with congenital constriction band and ipsilateral clubfoot were presented. They were treated with multiple Z plasties for their constricting ba

In a typical form of congenital club foot there is a complex primary and secondary post-loading deformation both of the feet and of all the bones of the lower extremity which by all means should be taken into consideration when correction with apparatuses of perosseous external fixation is carried out for the complete elimination of the congenital malformation and the prevention of a recurrent deformation.

Limbs may fail to grow properly during fetal development, but the extent to which such growth alters the nervous system has not been extensively explored. Here we describe the organization of the somatosensory system in a 6-year-old monkey (Macaca radiata) born with a deformed left foot in comparison to the results from a normal monkey (Macaca fascicularis). Toes 1, 3, and 5 were missing, but the proximal parts of toes 2 and 4 were present. We used anatomical tracers to characterize the patterns of peripheral input to the spinal cord and brainstem, as well as between thalamus and cortex. We al

The human foot has been characterized as a miracle of engineering and mechanical efficiency. It is a complex organ, both physiologically and structurally. The authors present a study of the foot and ankle with emphasis on the anatomy of midterm fetuses as revealed by cryomicrotomy.

The pathogenesis of metatarsus varus was investigated by a series of dissections of 14 normal feet of stillborn or infants who died during the perinatal period. The deformity could not be produced without the surgical incisions described below. A valgus position of the hindfoot was produced by maximal dorsiflexion of the foot. The deformity of the fore part of the foot could not be produced even by extreme traction on the tibialis anterior tendon even after capsulotomy of the first tarsometatarsal joint. Only extensive capsulotomies in the tarsometatarsal joints distal to the joint of Chopart

BACKGROUND: Neglected or inadequately treated rigid congenitally deformed feet in older children are a nightmarish challenge for the child, the parents, and the orthopaedic surgeon. Because of the multiplicity of spatial deformities exhibited by these feet and legs, it was hypothesized that correction using the Taylor spatial frame (TSF) would decrease morbidity, facilitate correction, and minimize treatment time in children from remote regions with extremely rigid deformed feet.
METHODS: Recent experience with the management of 11 such feet (Dimeglio type IV) in 9 children with an average ag

A literature review of the etiologies and treatments of both hallux varus and brachymetatarsia is presented. An unusual case report of a young girl with bilateral congenital hallux varus and brachymetatarsia of the first metatarsal is then discussed. A detailed account of the surgical correction consisting of autogenous bone grafts from adjacent metatarsals proved to demonstrate excellent biomechanical and cosmetic results.

Foot deformities associated with congenital myopathy are rarely treated surgically; therefore, few reports are available. We present cases of three patients who underwent surgery for foot deformities caused by congenital myopathy. Posteromedial release without talocalcaneal joint release is our surgical procedure. Surgical procedures in each case were determined on the basis of radiographic findings. Surgery resulted in plantigrade feet in the three patients, all of whom were able to walk without pain more than 3 years postoperatively.
