RATIONALE: Oxygen (δ18 O) and carbon (δ13 C) isotope analysis of foraminifera and other CaCO3 samples has been a key technique for paleoceanographical and paleoclimatological research for more than 60 years. There is ongoing demand for the analysis of ever smaller CaCO3 samples, driven, for example, by the desire to analyse single specimen planktic foraminifera, or small samples of tooth enamel.
METHODS: We present a continuous-flow mass spectrometric technique that uses cryo-focusing of sample CO2 to analyse CaCO3 samples in a weight range between 10 and 3 μg. These are considerably lower sa

Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding has emerged as a cost- and time-efficient alternative to traditional morpho-taxonomic methods for benthic foraminiferal inventories. However, the prevalence of soft-walled monothalamous taxa of unknown ecology, which are largely underrepresented in the barcode reference database, limits the accuracy of eDNA studies. Taxonomy-free approaches, which bypass species-level assignment, may overcome these constraints. Here, we use the case study of the Armida gas platform to confirm the potential of the taxonomy-free framework for ecological quality assessment.

HDP1 is an archaeological and faunal site located on the Hoedjiespunt peninsula at Saldanha Bay, South Africa, that has recently yielded fossil human remains. Artefacts from the associated archaeological deposits are identified as being Middle Stone Age. U series analysis of capping calcretes and analysis of the foraminifera and fauna associated with the human fossils indicate an age for the deposit in excess of 74,000 years before present, and it most probably dates to around 300,000 years before present. The fossil human teeth from in situ deposits at Hoedjiespunt are described and found to

Recent exploration of Miocene-age deposits at Nosy Makamby, a small island ~50 km southwest of Mahajanga city in northwestern Madagascar, has led to the recovery of a large sample [82] of isolated barracuda teeth (Sphyraena sp.). in a tropical marine fauna that also includes diverse marine invertebrates, chondrichthyans, bony fishes, turtles, crocodylians, and sirenians. Characteristically for barracudas, the teeth are labiolingually flattened and fang-like with a broadly triangular and blade-like acuminate outline and sharply edged but unserrated cutting margins. These barracudas inhabited an

The evolution of mitochondria provides crucial insights into the diversification of eukaryotes, with complex events of gene losses revealed through comparative analyses of mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) across eukaryotic lineages. However, the mitogenomes of many microbial eukaryotes remain underexplored due to challenges in their isolation and cultivation. Particularly understudied are Foraminifera (Rhizaria, SAR), unicellular calcifiers that are widely distributed across global oceans and important paleoenvironmental proxies. Using single-cell genomic sequencing, we report a 22-kb mitog

Children's forearm fractures treated in plaster after closed reduction can redisplace and require remanipulation. A retrospective review of 164 consecutive manipulations of fractures of radius and ulna in theatre over a 3-year period was carried out. After various exclusions, 114 patients entered the study. The overall rate of remanipulation was 14.04% (16 children). Presence of preoperative translation deformity predisposed to loss of position in plaster (P<0.0001). Residual deformity on intraoperative films also had a strong adverse influence on the outcome (P = 0.001). Usage of below-the-el

Water column denitrification, a major oceanic nitrogen (N) sink, decreased under past warmer-than-present climates, but the response of N2 fixation, the main oceanic N source, remains unresolved. Here we address this gap using foraminifera-bound N isotope records from the tropical Atlantic spanning the warm late Pliocene, a geological analog for projected 21st century warming. Our records show that tropical North Atlantic N2 fixation was reduced during the late Pliocene and had increased markedly by the late Pleistocene, likely due to an increase in water column denitrification, a process that

The Mediterranean, a sea with an already eventful history, is again undergoing an extreme change. A combination of general warming of the Mediterranean Sea and contact with the Indopacific world through the Suez Canal has set the stage for massive changes in the biota that inhabit this sea. For over a century, tropical species of all taxa have been migrating back into the Mediterranean, suggesting a duplication or restoration of a mid-Pliocene Piacenzian or late Miocene Tortonian situation. Test cases are presented in three major taxa. It is not a serial invasion by individual rogue exotic and

We describe a new agglutinated monothalamous foraminiferal species, Capsammina crassa sp. nov., based on integrated observations of the test morphology and the chemical characteristics of materials composing the test. The new species was found at a depth of <60 m on the East coast of Korea. The test morphology is typical of the genus Capsammina, comprising two or more mica plates with a ring of finely agglutinated mineral grains sandwiched between them and surrounding the cell body. There is no distinct test aperture. Elemental analyses of the agglutinated grains revealed 15 different types of

The cycling of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the ocean is closely linked to seawater alkalinity and the regulation of atmospheric CO2. In the modern pelagic ocean, almost all CaCO3 is produced by three groups of calcifying planktonic organisms: coccolithophores, foraminifers, and shelled pteropods. In this Review, we examine the differences in functional traits that define each group's distinctive role in the global carbon cycle and their sensitivity to climate change and ocean acidification. This synthesis reveals that a single representation of CaCO3 in climate models is unlikely to accuratel

Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have a detrimental impact on the carbon sequestration by the oceans. Pteropods, a crucial component of the ocean's planktic community, secrete aragonite shells that are sensitive to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, making them the first indicators of ocean acidification. Therefore, pteropods are often used to observe the changes in aragonite compensation depth (ACD). Intriguingly, in the major parts of the northern Indian Ocean, the chemically defined ACD is < 800 m, but pteropods have been reported in surface sediments collected from much de

The influence of within-species variation and covariation on evolutionary patterns is well established for generational and macroevolutionary processes, most prominently through genetic lines of least resistance. However, it is not known whether intraspecific phenotypic variation also directs microevolutionary trajectories into the long term when a species is subject to varying environmental conditions. Here we present a continuous, high-resolution bivariate record of size and shape changes among 12,633 individual planktonic foraminifera of a surviving and an extinct-going species over 500,000

Anthropogenic activities, primarily fossil fuel combustion, have increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and climate change effects. Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is now widely accepted as essential in all pathways to limit global warming in line with the Paris Agreement. Biomineralisation offers compelling and promising natural pathways for durable carbon sequestration by converting CO₂ into stable carbonate minerals, a process driven by a suite of biomolecules within bio-calcifying organisms. These processes are orchestrated by biomolecules such as proteins (e.g., carbonic anhydrase

Most paleo-episodes of ocean acidification (OA) were either too slow or too small to be instructive in predicting near-future impacts. The end-Cretaceous event (66 Mya) is intriguing in this regard, both because of its rapid onset and also because many pelagic calcifying species (including 100% of ammonites and more than 90% of calcareous nannoplankton and foraminifera) went extinct at this time. Here we evaluate whether extinction-level OA could feasibly have been produced by the asteroid impact. Carbon cycle box models were used to estimate OA consequences of (i) vaporization of up to 60 × 1

This study provides a multidisciplinary analysis of sediment-induced eutrophication in two coastal lagoons of the southern Caspian Sea, integrating hydrochemical assessments, remote sensing techniques, and sediment core investigations. Hydrochemical analysis confirmed that sediment resuspension during flushing operations led to elevated turbidity, which facilitated the transport of phosphorus-rich particles into the lagoons and resulted in a 127.6% increase in total phosphorus levels. Remote sensing data further validated these findings, demonstrating a marked increase in turbidity following f

Simvastatin, a cholesterol treatment drug, has been shown to stimulate bone regeneration. As such, there has been an increase interest in the development of suitable materials and systems for the delivery of simvastatin. Without the appropriate dosage of simvastatin, the therapeutic effects on bone growth will be significantly reduced. Furthermore, similar to many pharmaceutical compounds, at high concentration simvastatin can cause various adverse side-effects. Given the associated side-effects with the usage of simvastatin, the development of suitable controlled drug release system is pertin

Marine fish play a significant yet understudied role in the oceanic carbon cycle through the production of magnesium-rich calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitates known as ichthyocarbonates. These deposits form in the gut of marine teleost fish in response to salinity, serving as part of their osmoregulation strategy. Through this, marine fish may contribute as much as 9.04 Pg of CaCO3 per year in global new carbonate production, being equivalent to or potentially higher than the production by coccolithophores and pelagic foraminifera. Despite their ecological relevance, the biological mechanism
