The influence of the transposed stomach through the posterior mediastinum on the respiratory forced expiratory volume and forced vital capacity in patients with resected esophageal cancer.

Although the use of the posterior mediastinum and the stomach as a reconstruction option after esophagectomy has large acceptance all over the world, there are concerns about the potential respiratory impairment it could cause. We prospectively studied 35 patients regarding the forced expiratory volume and vital capacity. The patients were studied preoperatively and between the 45th and 60th postoperative days. The value of both parameters decreased, although they were still within normal clinical ranges. We concluded that this type of reconstruction does not harm the patients regarding the re

Forced expiratory volume in one second: A novel predictor of work disability in subjects with suspected obstructive sleep apnea.

Whether the association of work disability with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is mainly due to the disease, i.e. the number and frequency of apneas-hypoapneas, or to coexisting factors independent from the disease, is not well-established. In this study, we aim to evaluate work ability in a group of subjects undergoing OSA workup and to identify the major contributors of impaired work ability. In a cross-sectional study, we enrolled 146 consecutive subjects who have been working for the last five years and referred to the sleep disorders outpatients' clinic of the University-Hospital of Ferrar

Liver enzyme elevation and normal pulmonary function in an adult with a declining forced expiratory volume in 1 second.

This article presents a case report of a 41-year-old male firefighter with cholecystitis and a history of mildly elevated alanine aminotransferase. Liver biopsy showed periodic acid Schiff-positive, diastase-resistant periportal globules. Retrospective review of clinical data revealed progressive lung function decline despite absent pulmonary symptoms and normal pulmonary function testing. The following disorders should be considered in any patient with elevated transaminases without an apparent etiology: viral hepatitides, medication toxicity, autoimmune hepatitis, alcohol-induced hepatic inj

Small airway dysfunction by impulse oscillometry in asthmatic patients with normal forced expiratory volume in the 1st second values.

Small airways are relevant to the pathophysiology of asthma. We investigated whether in asthmatic patients with normal forced expiratory volume in the 1st second (FEV(1)) values, impulse oscillometry system (IOS), as a measure of small airway function, contributed additional information to spirometry either at baseline or after bronchodilator, and whether it was related to the disease control. The fall in resistance from 5 to 20 Hz (R5-R20) and reactance at 5 Hz (X5) by IOS and spirometry measures of small airway function (forced expiratory flow at 25-75% [FEF(25-75)] and forced vital capacity

Acute effects of outdoor air pollution on forced expiratory volume in 1 s: a panel study of schoolchildren with asthma.

Urban air pollution has been associated with morbidity but little information exists on how it affects diurnal variation of lung function in children with asthma. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effects of traffic-related pollution on lung function among children with asthma. We recorded morning and evening forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)) for 28 consecutive days in 182 elementary schoolchildren with physician-diagnosed asthma, and monitored ambient hourly air pollution concentrations. An interquartile range (IQR) increase (6.0 microg m(-3)) in the previous 24-h

Risk factors for rate of decline in forced expiratory volume in one second in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the rate of decline of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV(1)) in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis and to identify and compare risk factors associated with FEV(1) decline. STUDY DESIGN: The rate of decline in FEV(1)% predicted over 3 to 6 years in 3 different age groups was determined. Risk factors for decline were identified and compared among and within age groups as a function of disease severity with repeated-measures, mixed-model regression. RESULTS: Mean (+/-SD) baseline FEV(1)% predicted was 88.4% +/- 20.5% for 6- to 8-year-olds (n = 1811

Quantitative Computed Tomography Metrics From the Transplanted Lung can Predict Forced Expiratory Volume in the First Second After Lung Transplantation.

PURPOSE: Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome after lung transplantation (LTx) manifests as a sustained decline in forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1). Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) metrics may predict FEV1 better than semiquantitative scores (SQSs), and the transplanted lung may provide better information than the native lung in unilateral LTx. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Paired inspiratory-expiratory CT scans and pulmonary function testing of 178 LTx patients were analyzed retrospectively. SQS were graded (absent, mild, moderate, severe) for features including mosaic attenu

Is the reduction of forced expiratory lung volumes proportional to the lung parenchyma resection, 6 months after pneumonectomy?

OBJECTIVES: To preoperatively estimate the degree of first-second forced expired volume (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) reduction 6 months after pneumonectomy, according to the preoperative performed spirometry and bronchoscopy, and to estimate if the expected postoperative values of FEV1 and FVC are in accordance with the actual values. METHODS: Thirty-five patients, who underwent pneumonectomy for non-small cell lung cancer between 1996 and 1999, were included in the perspective study. All patients had total or near total bronchial obstruction at preoperative bronchoscopy. Patients w

Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 Second Variability Predicts Lung Transplant or Mortality in People with Cystic Fibrosis in the United States.

Rationale: Declines in percent predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 second (ppFEV1) are an important marker of clinical progression of cystic fibrosis (CF). Objectives: We examined ppFEV1 variability in relation to a combined outcome of lung transplant or death. Methods: We estimated the association between ppFEV1 variability and the combined outcome of lung transplant or death. We included children aged 8 years and older with CF and two prior years of ppFEV1 data before baseline between 2005 and 2021. We defined ppFEV1 increased variability as any relative increase or decrease of at least

An epidemiologic investigation of forced expiratory volume at 1 second and respiratory symptoms among employees of a toluene diisocyanate production plant.

Pulmonary function tests were done and compared to current and past potential exposure levels of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) for 57 TDI manufacturing workers and 89 workers not exposed to TDI or other known respiratory hazards. The average TDI plant experience was 4.1 years (standard deviation = 2.8). Routine industrial hygiene measurements have shown TDI exposure below a time-weighted average of 0.005 parts per million and a short-term exposure level of 0.02 parts per million. A certified industrial hygienist ranked department and job classification by level of potential exposure to TDI (none,

Increased Airway Wall Thickness is Associated with Adverse Longitudinal First-Second Forced Expiratory Volume Trajectories of Former World Trade Center workers.

RATIONALE: Occupational exposures at the WTC site after September 11, 2001 have been associated with several presumably inflammatory lower airway diseases. In this study, we describe the trajectories of expiratory air flow decline, identify subgroups with adverse progression, and investigate the association of a quantitative computed tomography (QCT) imaging measurement of airway wall thickness, and other risk factors for adverse progression. METHODS: We examined the trajectories of expiratory air flow decline in a group of 799 former WTC workers and volunteers with QCT-measured (with two ind

Association between plasma adiponectin levels and decline in forced expiratory volume in 1 s in a general Japanese population: the Takahata study.

BACKGROUND: Adiponectin is an anti-inflammatory and cardio-protective cytokine. However, several studies have demonstrated that plasma adiponectin levels were inversely associated with pulmonary function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, suggesting a proinflammatory or pulmonary-destructive role. It is still unclear whether adiponectin is a potent biomarker predicting declines in pulmonary function. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between adiponectin and pulmonary function among Japanese individuals who participated in an annual health check-up.

Geographical Differences and Temporal Improvements in Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 Second of Preterm-Born Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Although preterm birth is associated with later deficits in lung function, there is a paucity of information on geographical differences and whether improvements occur over time, especially after surfactant was introduced. OBJECTIVE: To determine deficits in percentage predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 second (%FEV1) in preterm-born study participants, including those with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in infancy, when compared with term-born control groups. DATA SOURCES: Eight databases searched up to December 2021. STUDY SELECTION: Studies reporting spirometry for pre

Determining emphysema in adult patients with COPD-bronchiectasis overlap using a novel spirometric parameter: area under the forced expiratory flow-volume loop.

BACKGROUND: Defining the optimal therapeutic approach in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) bronchiectasis overlap (CBO) is challenging. The presence of emphysema suggests that COPD is the primary problem and it impacts therapeutic decision making. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We hypothesized that the AreaFE% performance will be reliable in diagnosing the presence of emphysema such that serial CT scanning may not be needed. In this retrospective chart review study, we included 113 CBO patients (52 having emphysema, 61 not having emphysema). We compared these two groups

Low forced expiratory volume in one second is associated with the history of acute coronary syndrome in patients with organic coronary stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease often coexists with cardiovascular diseases and airflow limitation has been known as a risk of cardiovascular death. However, the association between airflow limitation and the history of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in patients with coronary stenosis remains to be determined. METHODS: Study subjects were 271 consecutive patients (age: 70.6±9.5 years, sex: 200 males) who underwent coronary angiography and in whom organic coronary stenosis was detected. We collected spirometric data from those patients and investigated the association of the p

Clustering of patients with severe asthma based on long-term percentage of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) changes: Real-world evidence.

BACKGROUND: Severe asthma is a heterogeneous disease with variable clinical manifestations and treatment responses. Long-term assessment of lung function trajectories may help define phenotypic and endotypic subgroups. OBJECTIVE: To identify distinct phenotypic clusters in patients with severe asthma using longitudinal changes in percentage of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1%) and assess the associated clinical and inflammatory profiles. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective cohort study analyzed 10-year follow-up data from adult patients with severe asthma. Latent class mixe
