Segmental forearm bone injuries in children: classification and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the forearm bones in children are a very frequent injury, while segmental injuries of the forearm bones are very rare and have not been sufficiently examined. In this retrospective study, segmental injuries involving the radius, the ulna or both in children are classified and treatment outcome is presented. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bone injury included any type of fracture or dislocation; segmental bone injury indicated the occurrence of more than one traumatic injury throughout the whole extent of each forearm bone. A total of 17 patients with 22 segmental bone injurie

MRI Correlation of Radial Head Fractures and Forearm Injuries.

Background: Radial head fractures can be associated with soft tissue injuries of the forearm and wrist. The Essex-Lopresti injury can lead to significant morbidity, especially if the diagnosis is not made acutely. Better identification of such injuries is needed to allow optimal surgical treatment and prevent long-term sequelae. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to correlate the degree of soft tissue injuries with radial head fractures. Methods: Sixteen pairs of forearms with an associated radial head fracture in 15 patients prospectively underwent an MRI within 2 weeks of their injury.

Soft tissue injuries: Chapter 8 Forearm, hand and wrist.

Hand, wrist and forearm injuries are common presentations to the emergency department. There is a huge variation of severity from small lacerations involving only skin to extensive upper limb composite loss. There is no minor injury in upper limb trauma. Even the most trivial of wounds may be associated with major tendon or nerve damage which, if missed, may have life-long functional implications for the patient. Although this review concentrates on soft tissue injury and not bony injury, it is not possible to separate the two completely. It is important to realise that all fractures have a so

Subclinical injuries in lacerations to the forearm and hand.

This report describes the incidence and severity of subclinical injuries to underlying structures in lacerations to the hand and forearm. One hundred consecutive hand and forearm lacerations that penetrated the full thickness of subcutaneous tissue were studied prospectively. Lacerations were explored under either biceps or forearm tourniquets. Injuries, treatment, tourniquet time, causative agent and complications were recorded. In all, 97 patients sustained 100 lacerations. A total of 49 deep injuries were discovered, none of which was detected clinically before exploration. Of these, 33 wer

[Combined injuries of arteries, nerves and tendons of the forearm].

Combined injuries of the forearm occupy an important place in modern structure of functionally severe traumas. Discussions concerning the best time for nerve reconstructions and unsolved questions of a necessity to restore one of the arteries if the other is safe confirms the importance of the problem. An analysis of the domestic and foreign literature data on diagnosing and treatment of the traumas in question is given. Main specific features of treatment depending on the time, character of injuries and functional role of the injured structures are described.

Elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand injuries among sport rock climbers.

OBJECTIVES: Sport rock climbing with its repetitive high-torque movements in gaining the ascent of a rock face or wall, often in steep overhanging positions, is associated with a unique distribution and form of upper limb injuries. In this article, we review the biomechanical aspects of sport rock climbing and the types of injuries commonly encountered in the forearm, wrist, and hand regions of elite sport rock climbers. Because elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand injuries predominate, representing 62% of the total injuries encountered, these anatomical areas have been selected for review. DATA S

Acute penetrating arterial injuries of the forearm. Ligation or repair?

The management of forearm arterial trauma is controversial and follow-up data on such injuries is scant. A survey was made of 249 patients with penetrating forearm trauma to determine the incidence and outcome of arterial injury. Sixty-six patients (26.5%) sustained 69 arterial injuries documented at operation or with angiography. The clinical manifestations of arterial injury were often subtle; 42.4 per cent of the patients had normal pulses and only 7.6 per cent presented with distal ischemia. In 9.1 per cent of the patients there was no clinical evidence of vascular injury. The most frequen

Injuries of the Extensor Tendons of the Hand and Forearm.

Extensor tendon injuries are commonly encountered after trauma. These injuries often result in acute weakness and have widely differing treatment options depending on the severity and the location of the injury within the upper extremity. Zone I injuries can often be treated nonoperatively with the potential for pinning of any large bony avulsion fragments. For zone II injuries, the tendons are often amenable to surgical repair with extension splinting for 6 weeks. Injuries at the central slip in zone III are often treated with closed extension splinting. In zone IV, these injuries are often t

Helicopter skiing wrist injuries. A case report of "bugaboo forearm".

Of the 42 skiers, 5 (11.9%) experienced symptoms of intersection syndrome early in their week of powder skiing. According to the mountain guides employed by the helicopter service, this overuse injury is quite common and does not represent an unusual incidence for this group of skiers. The mechanism of injury is likely repetitive dorsiflexion and radial deviation of the wrist against the resistance of deep snow on withdrawal of the planted ski pole. Interestingly, the more advanced competitive alpine skiers appeared to be most at risk, possibly because of their more aggressive pole plants. Pre

[A complex forearm injury caused by skateboarding].

Conservative treatment of forearm fractures in children is preferred. However, in a few cases an open reduction and internal fixation are required. The case of a 15-year-old boy with a complex forearm injury following a skateboard accident is reported. The surgical treatment of these injuries is presented and the indications for open reduction and internal fixation of forearm fractures in children are discussed.

Surgical Management of Arterial Injuries Within the Forearm: A Systematic Review.

Traumatic injuries to the forearm often involve damage to the radial or ulnar arteries. In isolated single vessel injuries whereby the hand remains perfused, the surgeon is presented with a dilemma: to repair or ligate? This systematic review aims to compare the outcomes between patients who underwent surgical repair or ligation of vessels (PROSPERO: CRD42022311323). A systematic electronic search of Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PubMed, and Cochrane CENTRAL databases was conducted (March 11, 2022). All surgical comparative studies in adults sustaining a single forearm vessel injury with a minimum
