Forecasting regional disparities in cataract surgery demand and ophthalmologist supply in Japan: a prefecture-level forecasting study.

OBJECTIVE: Cataracts are the leading cause of poor vision in Japanese adults. As Japan's population is rapidly ageing, the demand for cataract surgery will continue to increase. Despite this, quantitative research evaluating both supply and demand of cataract surgery is lacking. The objective of this study was to forecast future cataract surgery demand and the supply of ophthalmologists in Japan by region and evaluate the cataract surgery demand-supply balance considering regional differences in demographics and medical resources. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Based on the Ministry of Health, Labour

Affective forecasting and self-rated symptoms of depression, anxiety, and hypomania: evidence for a dysphoric forecasting bias.

Emerging research has examined individual differences in affective forecasting; however, we are aware of no published study to date linking psychopathology symptoms to affective forecasting problems. Pitting cognitive theory against depressive realism theory, we examined whether dysphoria was associated with negatively biased affective forecasts or greater accuracy. Participants (n=325) supplied predicted and actual emotional reactions for three days surrounding an emotionally evocative relational event, Valentine's Day. Predictions were made a month prior to the holiday. Consistent with cogni

ST-FGDIR: Spatiotemporal Traffic Forecasting with Forecast-Gain-Guided Deviation-Invariance Routing.

Accurate multi-step traffic forecasting requires models to respond to genuine traffic-state transitions while resisting deviations caused by missing or noisy observations. Existing deviation-aware methods characterize departures from recurrent patterns, but deviation magnitude alone does not indicate whether the resulting correction will improve a node-wise forecast. Guided by the insight that correction strength should depend on forecast gain rather than deviation magnitude, we propose Spatiotemporal Traffic Forecasting with Forecast-Gain-Guided Deviation-Invariance Routing (ST-FGDIR). Learning shared forecast-error structure to improve ensemble forecasts of seasonal respiratory outbreaks.

Real-time forecasts of seasonal respiratory outbreaks are critical for public health preparedness and healthcare planning. Multi-model ensembles, which combine predictions from individual models, have become a leading approach for operational outbreak forecasting. Their success, however, depends in part on the assumption that component models make sufficiently independent errors. Here, we examined this assumption using archived real-time forecasts for influenza hospitalizations and influenza-like illness (ILI) in the United States. We found that component models with diverse structures and cal

Leveraging probabilistic forecasts for dengue preparedness and control: The 2024 Dengue Forecasting Sprint in Brazil.

Forecast models are a key decision-support tool for public health authorities in managing epidemics, feeding into early warning systems, scenario evaluations, and an empirical basis for resource allocation. In Brazil, improving dengue forecasting became a priority in response to the unprecedented increase in cases, which surpassed the total of the previous decade and expanded to new regions. The Infodengue-Mosqlimate consortium launched the Infodengue-Mosqlimate Dengue Challenge 2024 (IMDC24), or Dengue Forecast Sprint, bringing together six international teams provided with cases and climate

Fine forecasts: encouraging the media to include ultraviolet radiation information in summertime weather forecasts.

Melanoma and skin cancer are largely attributable to over-exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Reports of UVR levels within media weather forecasts appear to be well received by the public and have good potential to communicate the need for appropriate sun protection to a broad audience. This study describes provision of UVR messages by New Zealand newspapers, radio and TV stations over a 4-year period, and examines the impact of an intervention which aimed to address media concerns about the financial costs of accessing UVR information for broadcast. Global inequalities in weather forecasts.

Weather forecasts provide substantial economic value for society, but differences in forecast accuracy across regions can potentially exacerbate existing-and create new-economic inequalities. These differences are particularly important given the role of weather forecasts in helping prevent damage from climate change. In this paper, we provide a global analysis of the accuracy of predictions of temperature and relate our findings to existing economic inequalities. We report two stylized facts: First, temperature forecasts are much more accurate in high-income countries compared to low-income c

Reverberation: Learning the Latencies Before Forecasting Trajectories.

Bridging the past to the future, connecting agents both spatially and temporally, lies at the core of the trajectory prediction task. Despite great efforts, it remains challenging to explicitly learn and predict latencies, i.e., response intervals or temporal delays with which agents respond to various trajectory changing events and adjust their future paths, whether on their own or interactively. Different agents may exhibit distinct latency preferences for noticing, processing, and reacting to a specific trajectory-changing event. The lack of consideration of such latencies may undermine the

Forecasting Multitrait Resistance Evolution under Antibiotic Stress.

Many bacteria rely on efflux pumps to survive antibiotic stress and exposure to antibiotics often leads to mutations in pump genes or their regulators that increase pump expression. Predicting the spectrum of these mutations is important for designing effective antibiotic treatments, but the underlying regulatory networks are large and complex, making them difficult to map experimentally. To address this challenge, we developed a mathematical framework that integrates dynamical equations for efflux pump regulation with a genetic algorithm for parameter estimation and evolutionary simulations.

Generative diffusion models for spatiotemporal influenza forecasting.

Forecasting infectious disease incidence can provide important information to guide public health planning, yet it is difficult because epidemic dynamics are complex. Current mechanistic and statistical approaches often struggle to capture multimodal uncertainty or emergent trends. Influpaint adapts denoising diffusion probabilistic models to epidemic forecasting. By encoding influenza seasons as spatiotemporal images in which pixel intensity represents incidence, Influpaint learns a rich distribution of disease dynamics from a hybrid dataset of surveillance and simulated trajectories. Neural parameter calibration for dengue outbreak forecasting.

Dengue fever poses a growing public health challenge in tropical and subtropical regions, with transmission driven by complex interactions among viral and host. Computational models, often expressed as ordinary differential equations (ODEs), are widely used to understand complex systems such as dengue fever transmission dynamics. However, traditional parameter estimation methods such as Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) often require complex setups and are computationally expensive. In this study, we choose a compartmental model extended to human and mosquito populations, estimate its parameters

Chromatic forecasting hydrogels for anti-icing applications.

Icing forecast provides advanced notification, enabling preemptive anti-icing treatments to prevent facility damage and minimize economic losses from unexpected icing events. However, in real-world environments and practical applications, current technologies struggle to accurately predict ice formation on solid surfaces. This difficulty arises from the random and unpredictable nature of ice nucleation, influenced by variable weather conditions, diverse ice-nucleating agents, complex surface properties, and uncertain material defects or contamination. Herein, inspired by the role of ice-nuclea

Deep recurrent models for forecasting infectious diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Infectious diseases present significant challenges to global healthcare systems due to their rapid spread and associated profound health implications. Early detection of unusual increases in case numbers is crucial for achieving efficient resource allocation and effective response planning. METHOD: Therefore, this research proposes and develops a time series predictive framework based on long short-term memory (LSTM), bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM), and gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural network models to forecast the number of COVID-19 cases in Saudi Arabia and detect any unusual i

Forecasting individual progression trajectories in Alzheimer's disease.

The anticipation of progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is crucial for evaluations of secondary prevention measures thought to modify the disease trajectory. However, it is difficult to forecast the natural progression of AD, notably because several functions decline at different ages and different rates in different patients. We evaluate here AD Course Map, a statistical model predicting the progression of neuropsychological assessments and imaging biomarkers for a patient from current medical and radiological data at early disease stages. We tested the method on more than 96,000 cases, w

Forecasting outcomes after cholecystectomy in octogenarian patients.

BACKGROUND: Although gallstone disease increases with aging, elderly patients are less likely to undergo cholecystectomy. This is because age itself is a negative predictor after cholecystectomy. The ACS-NSQIP risk calculator can therefore help surgeons decide whether to operate or not. However, little is known about the accuracy of this model outside the ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the ability of the ACS-NSQIP model to predict the clinical outcomes of patients aged 80 years or older undergoing elective or emergency cholecystec

Forecasting Trachoma Control and Identifying Transmission-Hotspots.

BACKGROUND: Tremendous progress towards elimination of trachoma as a public health problem has been made. However, there are areas where the clinical indicator of disease, trachomatous inflammation-follicular (TF), remains prevalent. We quantify the progress that has been made, and forecast how TF prevalence will evolve with current interventions. We also determine the probability that a district is a transmission-hotspot based on its TF prevalence (ie, reproduction number greater than one). METHODS: Data on trachoma prevalence come from the GET2020 global repository organized by the World He

Affective forecasting accuracy in obsessive compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates that people suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) possess several cognitive biases, including a tendency to over-estimate threat and avoid risk. Studies have suggested that people with OCD not only over-estimate the severity of negative events, but also under-estimate their ability to cope with such occurrences. What is less clear is if they also miscalculate the extent to which they will be emotionally impacted by a given experience. AIMS: The aim of the current study was twofold. First, we examined if people with OCD are especially poor at predict

Loss aversion is an affective forecasting error.

Loss aversion occurs because people expect losses to have greater hedonic impact than gains of equal magnitude. In two studies, people predicted that losses in a gambling task would have greater hedonic impact than would gains of equal magnitude, but when people actually gambled, losses did not have as much of an emotional impact as they predicted. People overestimated the hedonic impact of losses because they underestimated their tendency to rationalize losses and overestimated their tendency to dwell on losses. The asymmetrical impact of losses and gains was thus more a property of affective

Signature-forecasting and early outbreak detection system.

Daily disease monitoring via a public health surveillance system provides valuable information on population risks. Efficient statistical tools for early detection of rapid changes in the disease incidence are a must for modern surveillance. The need for statistical tools for early detection of outbreaks that are not based on historical information is apparent. A system is discussed for monitoring cases of infections with a view to early detection of outbreaks and to forecasting the extent of detected outbreaks. We propose a set of adaptive algorithms for early outbreak detection that does not
