Forelimb muscle plasticity following unilateral cervical spinal cord injury.

INTRODUCTION: Motor dysfunction and muscle atrophy are well documented in the lower extremity after spinal cord injury. However, the extent and time course of myoplastic changes in forelimb musculature is not clear. METHODS: Forelimb muscle morphology and fiber type were evaluated after high cervical hemilesion injury in rats. RESULTS: There was significant atrophy of the ipsilateral extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) muscle at 2 weeks postinjury, which was subsequently reversed at 8 weeks postinjury. The triceps muscle showed minimal evidence of atrophy after spinal injury. No significan

On the kinematics of forelimb landing of frog Rana rugulosus.

A frog can jump several times higher than its own height and then land smoothly on the ground. During the buffering phase, both forelimbs touch the ground and compact quickly to absorb most of the impact energy. However, the adjustment of the joint angles of the forelimb and the induced cushioning effect during the landing process have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we statistically summarized the angular displacements of forelimb joints with respect to landing velocities by using a high-speed motion capture system. It is found many joint angles were linearly influenced by la

Visual targeting of forelimbs in ladder-walking locusts.

Accurate limb placement helps animals and robots to walk on substrates that are uneven or contain gaps. Visual information is important in controlling limb placement in walking mammals but has received little attention in insects. We investigated whether desert locusts walking along a horizontal ladder use vision to control limb placement. High-speed video analysis showed that locusts targeted their front legs to specific rungs in the absence of any previous contact, suggesting that visual information alone is sufficient for targeting single steps. Comparison between the proportions of missed

Treatment of a shoulder luxation in a forelimb amputee dog.

An eight-year-old, male, thoracic limb amputee Whippet presented with a traumatic lateral luxation of the scapulohumeral joint. Surgical reduction and stabilisation of the shoulder joint by means of a modified Campbell scapulohumeral prosthesis and capsulorrhaphy was unsuccessful and reluxation of the shoulder joint occurred. Subsequent surgical stabilisation using bicipital tendon transposition and a modified Campbell scapulohumeral encircling prosthesis in combination with a novel body cast / Spica splint resulted in a return to satisfactory function of this limb.

Bilateral subluxation of the pastern joint in the forelimbs of a foal.

A three-month-old foal was presented with subluxation of the proximal interphalangeal joint in both forelimbs. The condition, which was considered to represent an unusual manifestation of breakdown of the suspensory apparatus, appeared to have developed as a consequence of extreme overexertion, 10 days previously. This had resulted in rupture of the palmar supporting structures of the joint; namely, the superficial distal sesamoidean ligament, the insertion of the superficial digital flexor tendon and the palmar joint capsule. Severe laxity of the flexor tendons had been present in the neonata

A neural geometry for forelimb proprioception in the cervical spinal cord.

Precise, real-time somatosensory feedback is essential for coordinated movement. While the anatomy and physiology of these sensory pathways is well described, their neural code and its construction remains unclear. Here we show that neurons in the cervical spinal cord generate a precise neural representation of the forelimb's kinematic state using muscle and tendon sensory afferent inputs. We identify two classes of movement responsive neurons - the first encodes speed, position and direction of the limb, while the second exhibits precise firing at specific limb positions or grid-like firing p

Osteoarticular radiographic findings of the distal forelimbs in Tbourida Horses.

Tbourida is a traditional Moroccan equestrian sport in which 15 horses gallop 200 m in a line while riders fire into the sky with muskets. The stop is the finale and representative demands of this equestrian event. Such particular sudden stop after a fast gallop requires a hyperextension of the metacarpophalangeal joint. Indeed, it is well known that Tbourida show predisposes horses to different injuries of the hard and soft tissues of the distal forelimbs. Yet, there is a paucity of research that examined such lesions. The aim of the present study was to investigate for the first time the typ

Postaxial polydactyly in forelimbs of CRABP-II mutant mice.

The cytoplasmic retinoic acid (RA)-binding protein CRABP-II is expressed widely throughout early morphogenesis in mouse embryo, but its expression becomes more restricted as organogenesis progresses. CRABP-II expression remains strong in the developing limb bud suggesting a role for this protein in limb patterning. Here, we show that the CRABP-II promoter can direct expression of a lacZ transgene in a specific posterior domain during limb bud development. In order to investigate in more detail the role played by CRABP-II in RA signal transduction, we have also generated mice homozygous for a n

Ipsilateral motor control of the forelimb in the congenitally acallosal mouse.

The corticospinal projections of mice with callosal agenesis were investigated using electro-physiological and horseradish peroxidase techniques. In the normal mouse, intracortical stimulation of the motor area with the microelectrode resulted in contralateral contraction of the forelimb, whereas ipsilateral contraction was observed in the acallosal mouse. Hence, mice with congenital absence of the corpus callosum show physiologically ipsilateral motor control. Furthermore, latency of the forelimb contraction elicited by electrical stimulation of the acallosal mouse was slightly shorter than t

Cerebellar outputs for rapid directional refinement of forelimb movement.

Much of our interaction with the world relies on the ability to move our limbs with speed and precision. The cerebellum is critical for movement coordination, yet how outputs from the cerebellum continually guide the limb and whether discrete pathways differentially contribute to adjusting motor output remain unclear. Using intersectional viral approaches in mice, we identify two spatially intermingled yet anatomically distinct cerebellar populations that drive the forelimb either toward or away from the body. Neural recordings reveal cerebellar activity that correlates with and precedes these

Forelimb musculature and osteological correlates in Sauropodomorpha (Dinosauria, Saurischia).

This contribution presents the forelimb muscular arrangement of sauropodomorph dinosaurs as inferred by comparisons with living archosaurs (crocodiles and birds) following the Extant Phylogenetic Bracket approach. Forty-one muscles were reconstructed, including lower limb and manus musculature, which prior information available was scarce for sauropodomorphs. A strong emphasis was placed on osteological correlates (such as tubercles, ridges and striae) and comparisons with primitive archosauromorphs are included in order to track these correlates throughout the clade. This should help to eluci

Cadmium-induced forelimb ectrodactyly: a proposed mechanism of teratogenesis.

We have attempted to elucidate the mechanism of cadmium teratogenesis utilizing inbred mouse strains sensitive (C57BL/6J) or resistant (SWV) to the embryotoxic effect of this common heavy metal contaminant. Carbonic anhydrase activity of whole-embryo homogenates was moderately depressed in C57BL/6J mice compared to a slight and transient decrease in the resistant SWV mice. Embryonic erythrocytes were similarly examined, and the cadmium did not have any effect on carbonic anhydrase activity in either strain. Likewise, histochemical examination of carbonic anhydrase activity did not reveal any e

Extracellular matrix protein composition dynamically changes during murine forelimb development.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is an integral part of multicellular organisms, connecting different cell layers and tissue types. During morphogenesis and growth, tissues undergo substantial reorganization. While it is intuitive that the ECM remodels in concert, little is known regarding how matrix composition and organization change during development. Here, we quantified ECM protein dynamics in the murine forelimb during appendicular musculoskeletal morphogenesis (embryonic days 11.5-14.5) using tissue fractionation, bioorthogonal non-canonical amino acid tagging, and mass spectrometry. Our

A functional map for diverse forelimb actions within brainstem circuitry.

The brainstem is a key centre in the control of body movements. Although the precise nature of brainstem cell types and circuits that are central to full-body locomotion are becoming known1-5, efforts to understand the neuronal underpinnings of skilled forelimb movements have focused predominantly on supra-brainstem centres and the spinal cord6-12. Here we define the logic of a functional map for skilled forelimb movements within the lateral rostral medulla (latRM) of the brainstem. Using in vivo electrophysiology in freely moving mice, we reveal a neuronal code with tuning of latRM population

A paradigm for skilled forelimb reaching by head-restrained mice.

Forelimb reaching tasks are widely used in neuroscience across species. In mice, pellet reaching is especially useful because it requires fine motor control. However, few automated pellet-delivery systems are well suited for head-restrained reaching, where pellet position must be highly consistent. Here we present a complete pipeline for head-restrained, or head-fixed, forelimb reaching in mice. The pipeline includes a simple customizable pellet-presentation rig, an effective training protocol, and analysis code to detect reaches and classify their outcomes. To demonstrate pipeline utility, we

RADIOGRAPHIC ANATOMY OF THE FORELIMB IN THE NORTHERN TAMANDUA (TAMANDUA MEXICANA).

The thoracic limb anatomy of anteaters in the family Myrmecophagidae is specialized for accessing termite and ant nests and for defense purposes. In the case of the northern tamandua (Tamandua mexicana), the forelimbs are also adapted for arboreal and terrestrial locomotion. Unfortunately, this species faces many conservation threats, such as habitat loss and traffic accidents, and injured individuals are frequently taken to wildlife rehabilitation centers. However, lack of knowledge of the radiographic osteoanatomy of this species may prevent appropriate management of injuries and thereby red

Monosynaptic rubrospinal projections to distal forelimb motoneurons in the cat.

In the present electrophysiological experiments, we examined whether or not there are short-latency excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) suggesting monosynaptic rubro- and corticomotoneuronal connections in the cervical spinal segments in cats. Under pentobarbital anesthesia and immobilization with gallamine triethiodide, intracellular recordings were made from forelimb motoneurons (Mns) following stimulation of the red nucleus (RN) and the cerebral peduncle (CP). Mns comprising the musculocutaneous nerve (Musc. Mns), the radial nerve (Rad. Mns), the ulnar nerve (Uln. Mns), and the media

CGRP-mediated changes in segmental resistances in the canine forelimb.

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a 37 amino acid peptide which is found in high concentrations in the perivascular nerves innervating the resistance vessels of the peripheral circulation. In the current study we have infused CGRP at three infusion rates (.01, .1 and 1.0 micrograms/min into the brachial artery for thirty minutes at each infusion rate) in the isolated, innervated canine forelimb perfused at natural flow. We measured large artery and vein pressures, small artery and vein pressures and blood flows in both the skin and skeletal muscle circulations for the calculation of to

The effects of thalidomide and two analogues on the regenerating forelimb of the newt.

Oral administration (3 mg/day) of thalidomide during the dedifferentiation and early limb-bud stages of newt forelimb regeneration produced a variety of specific limb deformities. Proximal and preaxial skeletal elements were the most severely malformed, e.g. preaxial hemimelia, severe proximal deformities, and preaxial polydactyly. Likewise, oral, daily doses (3 mg) of the teratogenic analogue, EM12, on days 7 and 8 following bilateral amputation caused the same incidence and type of forelimb abnormalities as did thalidomide. Conversely, the non-teratogenic analogue, EM87, when orally administ
