It is all about the insects: a retrospective on 20 years of forensic entomology highlights the importance of insects in legal investigations.

This study highlights the importance of insect evidence by evaluating 949 insect-associated cases, including 139 entomological reports, from 2001 to 2019 at the Institute of Legal Medicine Frankfurt/Germany. With a high number of cases in the summer months and a low number in the colder season, 78.5% of the bodies were found indoors, regardless of year or month. In more than 80% of the cases, where PMI information was available (n = 704), the presumed PMI ranged from 1 to 21 days, a period during which entomological evidence can provide a day-specific estimate of PMImin. In cases where insects

Chemical profiling of developmental stages in three major flies via direct infusion mass spectrometry: Improving estimates of minimum postmortem intervals in forensic entomology.

Forensic entomology has become an essential tool for estimating the minimum postmortem interval (mPMI), especially in scenarios where traditional methods are limited. This study aimed to characterize and differentiate the chemical profiles of three major forensically relevant fly species-Chrysomya albiceps, Cochliomyia macellaria, and Lucilia cuprina-across their developmental stages. Changes in chemical profiles during larval, pupal, and pharate adult stages were monitored via ethanol-based solvent extraction followed by direct infusion mass spectrometry (DIMS). Distinct chemical fingerprints

Development of a standardized routine workflow for entomological and toxicological analysis using larvae of two forensically relevant fly species (Diptera, Calliphoridae).

For more than four decades, no standardized study design or workflow has been established for systematic entomotoxicological research in forensic casework. This study aimed to develop a universal rearing protocol for fly larvae grown on drug-spiked tissue surrogate and a standardized workflow for the qualitative analysis of pharmacologically active compounds (PACs) in insects of different developmental stages. Larvae of Protophormia terraenovae and Lucilia sericata were reared on minced meat serving as tissue surrogate. First-instar larvae were transferred to minced meat spiked with diazepam,

Ultrastructure of immature stages of Lucilia cuprina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) using scanning electron microscopy.

The blowfly Lucilia cuprina is distributed worldwide and is a mechanical vector of pathogens. It can cause myiasis in humans and is strongly related to forensic entomology, as it is frequently found on human and animal corpses. However, most of the L. cuprina found on corpses are the immature stages of this fly. Correct identification is very important for forensic entomology but at present only the identification keys of adult L. cuprina are available. Thus, the aim of this paper was to describe and analyze the morphological characteristics of all larval instars and the puparia of L. cuprina

Common Ground between Biological Rhythms and Forensics.

Biological clocks set the timing for a large number of essential processes in the living human organism. After death, scientific evidence is required in forensic investigations in order to collect as much information as possible on the death circumstances and personal identifiers of the deceased victim. We summarize the associations between the molecular mechanisms of biological rhythms and forensically relevant aspects, including post-mortem interval and cause of death, entomological findings, sex, age, ethnicity and development. Given their importance during lifetime, biological rhythms coul

Optical coherence tomography in forensic sciences: a review of the literature.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an interferometric imaging technique that has revolutionized clinical ophthalmology since the first half of the 1990's. Despite this approach being successfully employed in ophthalmology and having great potential in forensic cases, its use in different forensic fields appears to be quite limited. In this review we reviewed the scientific literature regarding the application of OCT in forensic science and legal medicine from 1995 to 2019. Our research showed the usefulness of this approach for the study of coronary injuries, postmortem ocular changes, fore

Temperature-dependent development of Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae) and posterior spiracle-based substaging of third instar larvae.

Estimating the minimum postmortem interval (mPMI) is an essential task in practical forensic entomology. mPMI estimation is carried out using information on the species recovered at the scene, appropriate developmental data, and the developmental stages of those species. In this study, we obtained developmental data for Musca domestica Linnaeus, 1758 (Diptera: Muscidae), a synanthropic species that inhabits human-associated environments and is also encountered in forensic entomology cases. Musca domestica was reared at constant temperatures ranging from 16 to 34 °C, and we generated developmen

Human identification by lice: A Next Generation Sequencing challenge.

Rapid and progressive advances in molecular biology techniques and the advent of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) have opened new possibilities for analyses also in the identification of entomological matrixes. Insects and other arthropods are widespread in nature and those found at a crime scene can provide a useful contribution to forensic investigations. Entomological evidence is used by experts to define the postmortem interval (PMI), which is essentially based on morphological recognition of the insect and an estimation of its insect life cycle stage. However, molecular genotyping methods

When termites mimic disease: Vertebral osteolysis and indoor scene alteration in the French West Indies.

Entomologically induced bone modification is increasingly recognized in archaeological and palaeontological contexts yet remains rarely documented in forensic casework. We report an indoor forensic case of extensive vertebral destruction most consistent with arboreal nasutitermitine termites, herein reported as Nasutitermes sp. (Isoptera: Termitidae) in Martinique. A largely desiccated human skeleton, discovered in 2025 inside a locked residence, exhibited severe osteolysis of cervical vertebrae (C3-C6) and the right mandibular head. The lesions displayed diagnostic features of termite activit

Ultrastructure of immature stages of the blowfly Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann, 1818) (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Forensic entomology is an area of science that serves as a tool in crime scene investigations. Usually, flies are the first insects to reach a carcass and can oviposit just a few hours after arrival. Therefore, the knowledge of immature stages is essential for correct identification of the species found on corpses. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) gives detailed information about morphological characters helping to identify the immature forms of flies. Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann) is a very important fly for forensic entomology, because it has high population densities and is easily found i

The Role of Diptera and Coleoptera (Arthropoda: Insecta) in Identifying Injuries and Estimating Postmortem Interval: A Case Report.

Diptera and Coleoptera (Arthropoda: Insecta) are of great importance in forensic entomology for providing valuable information that contribute to investigations of the cause of death, cases of neglect and mistreatment or for estimating post-mortem interval (PMI), among others. Considering that the period of insect activity (PIA) reliably and accurately represents the PMI and the increasing use of entomological evidence in forensic cases, we report a case in which Hemilucilia segmentaria (Fabricius) (Diptera, Calliphoridae) was used as entomological evidence to estimate the PMI in a suspected d

Review on forensic importance of myiasis: Focus on medicolegal issues on post-mortem interval estimation and neglect evaluation.

Myiasis is the infestation of live vertebrates by dipterous larvae that feed on living or necrotic tissues, liquid body substances or ingested food and develop in or on the vertebrate body. In both animals and humans, myiasis plays a fundamental role in forensic practice because of its implications in the evaluation of cases of neglect and in the mPMI (minimum post-mortem interval) estimation. The present study aims to provide a review of forensic issues related to myiasis. A retrospective analysis was conducted by exploring major electronic literature databases. Methodological evaluation of e
