Accuracy of ray pinning compared to model-based image matching for forensic investigations.

Forensic investigations often require accurate placement of objects or persons in an incident scene in order to establish the most likely scenario of how events transpired. This can be accomplished through ray pinning, a technique in which control points on a model of an object of interest and a 2D image of the incident scene are correlated to optimally match the location of the object in 3D space to its location in the 2D image. Alternatively, a technique referred to as model-based image matching (MBIM) relies on the acuity of an operator's vision to manually manipulate the location of the mo

Post-mortem Imaging of Brain/Spine Injuries: The Importance of a Comprehensive Forensic Approach.

In forensic investigations, the limitations of the traditional purely autoptic approach can be overcome through post-mortem imaging (virtopsy). Virtospy has several applications to the investigation of brain and spinal injuries, whose analysis can be of forensic interest, especially in cases of suspected malpractice. In this scoping review, we briefly describe the main applications of the two most common post-mortem radiological techniques (computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)) to the forensic investigation of brain and spinal injuries in cases of medical malpractice o

A forensic case of hydranencephaly in a preterm neonate fully documented by postmortem imaging techniques.

UNLABELLED: The authors present a medico-legal autopsy case of hydranencephaly in a male preterm newborn, fully documented by postmortem unenhanced and enhanced imaging techniques (postmortem computed tomography and postmortem magnetic resonance imaging). Hydranencephaly is a congenital anomaly of the central nervous system, consisting in almost complete absence of the cerebral hemispheres and replacement of the cerebral parenchyma by cerebrospinal fluid, rarely encountered in forensic medical practice. A premature baby was born during the supposed 22nd and 24th week of pregnancy in the contex

Personal Identification in Forensic Science Using Uniqueness of Radiographic Image of Frontal Sinus.

Frontal sinus pattern matching is a useful means of forensic identification. By the use of radiographs forensic scientists have recognized that there are diverse anatomical variations in the structure of the frontal sinus. Radiographs are a diagnostic tool, widely used in dental practices, hospitals and other health disciplines. Most health institutions possess the facility to store radiographs over long periods of time. Frontal sinus pattern matching technique can be applied in cases where ante mortem frontal sinus radiographs are available and dental matching cannot be carried out. Frontal s

Forensic relevance of post-mortem CT imaging of the haemopericardium in determining the cause of death.

The post-mortem diagnosis of pericardial tamponade is associated with several medical legal problems. Thus, we explored whether post-mortem computed tomography might provide useful and reliable information for the diagnosis of this relevant disease in combination with autopsy data. We retrospectively reviewed the post-mortem computed tomography and autopsy reports of 15 autopsy cases with haemopericardium detected at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Berne from July 2005 to February 2010. Two computer tomography findings were examined in combination with autopsy results. The first was the

[Frontiers and Perspectives of Artificial Intelligence in Forensic Research on CT Imaging Diagnosis of Rib Fractures].

Rib fractures are relatively common in thoracic trauma, and the number of fractured ribs as well as the presence of malunion are closely associated with criminal sentencing and civil compensation, thereby holding significant forensic significance. At present, the diagnosis of rib fractures in forensic practice primarily relies on computed tomography (CT) examinations. However, achieving accurate results often demands substantial time and effort from experienced forensic experts, with limitations in diagnostic efficiency and consistency. In recent years, the rapid advancement of artificial inte

A case of Jack Russel Terrier scavenging: Images and three dimensional models for forensic interpretation.

Distinguishing between ante-mortem and post-mortem domestic dog injuries is fundamental in order to correctly find the cause of the death. Although fatal aggressions are chiefly perpetrated by pit bull-type dogs, small dogs are responsible for a significant share of animal bites and can cause high-degree injuries. On the other side, indoor and outdoor scavenging can hinder forensic investigation, consuming parts of the body where crucial forensic features like bruises and wounds have been inflicted. In the case we present, a man died after falling down his house stairs because of a traumatic i

[Forensic identification value of roentgen images in determining tooth-colored dental filling materials].

UNLABELLED: Identification of unknown bodies is mainly made by dental examination and comparison with accurate dental records. Therefore it is necessary to examine the jaws carefully and to locate every tooth-coloured dental restoration. Overlooking dental fillings can make positive identification impossible. The paper presented here evaluates the usefulness of radiographs to locate tooth coloured dental restorations. RESULTS: 40% of the dental materials tested here could not be detected radiographically with a sensitivity that is demanded. A radiographic examination is not sufficient and mus

Forensic imaging: The sensitivities of various imaging modalities in detecting skeletal trauma in simulated cases of child abuse using a pig model.

Physical child abuse is a major problem in South Africa and throughout the world, and the detection of skeletal trauma in victims of abuse may be critical in the accurate investigation of these cases. Since many of these fractures are not detected during traditional autopsy, the use of various diagnostic imaging tools is implemented in order to aid in the detection of trauma. In South Africa, Lodox (low-dose full-body X-ray) is commonly used in forensic mortuaries and the aim of this study was to assess the sensitivities of CT, X-ray and Lodox, in comparison to dry bone as the gold standard, i

Hyoid Bone Fracture Pattern Assessment in the Forensic Field: The Importance of Post Mortem Radiological Imaging.

Post mortem hyoid bone fracture findings may be attributable to various factors, including both the onset of acute mechanical asphyxia as it happens in manual strangulation and in charred corpses. In forensic practice, the discovery of corpses burned after death to hide their real cause of death is not uncommon: in these cases, the diagnostic challenge is even greater, as the action of flames is capable of both masking previously generated lesions and/or generating new ones, as occurs for hyoid bone fractures. The case concerns a 76-year-old man found charred in his bedroom. Almost complete bo

Magnetic resonance imaging-based evaluation of ossification of the medial clavicular epiphysis in forensic age assessment.

Evaluation of the degree of ossification of the medial clavicular epiphysis plays a crucial role in determining with an adequate degree of probability whether legally relevant age boundaries after the age of 17 have been crossed. In view of the need to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure, establishing non-X-ray methods for investigating the clavicle has long been a key objective in forensic age assessment research. Based on magnetic resonance imaging examinations in a large sample of healthy subjects, the current study for the first time presents statistical measures which allow inferences to

Pars basilaris size to estimate fetal and young infant age using forensic post mortem CT imaging.

Accurate determination of fetal or neonatal age is vital in forensic and medicolegal death investigations. The pars basilaris of the occipital bone, one of the earliest and densest ossification centers, is less susceptible to taphonomic alteration than other measurements, and exhibits predictable growth patterns. Utilizing post mortem computed tomography (PMCT), measurements of the pars basilaris - specifically its maximum length (ML) and maximum width (MW) - can be applied to validated regression models to estimate age. We retrospectively reviewed all fetal and stillbirth/neonate PMCT cases f

Does the quality of dental images depend on patient's age and sex ?- Explanations from the forensic sciences.

The objective of this analysis was to investigate the dependency of image quality of dental panoramic radiographs on patient's age and sex, and to demonstrate that forensic science can explain these relationships. The image qualities of 100 dental panoramic radiographs obtained from 50 patients with two devices were assessed by ten independent observers of different specialisations. Image quality decreased with increasing age of the patients (P=0.003). One of the devices turned out to be superior to the other; however, this difference between the devices was present only in older patients but

Intrahepatic gas at postmortem computed tomography: forensic experience as a potential guide for in vivo trauma imaging.

BACKGROUND: Until August 2004 there were 106 forensic cases examined with postmortem multislice computed tomography (MSCT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging before traditional autopsy within the Virtopsy project. Intrahepatic gas (IHG) was a frequent finding in postmortem MSCT examinations. The aim of this study was to investigate its cause and significance. METHODS: There were 84 virtopsy cases retrospectively investigated concerning the occurrence, location, and volume of IHG in postmortem MSCT imaging (1.25 mm collimation, 1.25 mm thickness). We assessed and noted the occurrence of intes

Analysis of carpal bones on MR images for age estimation: First results of a new forensic approach.

Current multifactorial age estimation methods are based on radiography, however, in the forensic field there is growing interest in using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). With regard to the carpal region, MRI provides more information for defining the individual ossification nuclei and the cartilage surrounding single bones. During the phase of bone growth, the progressive reduction of the cartilage layer is accompanied by the development of a cartilage-bone interface. The aim of our study was to create a new model for age estimation, based on the ratio between the area occupied by the nucleu

Detection of exogenous substances in latent fingermarks by silver-assisted LDI imaging MS: perspectives in forensic sciences.

For over one hundred years, the fingerprint has reigned as one of the most trusted pieces of forensic evidence for suspect identification. In the last few decades, the modernization of chemical analysis technologies led scientists to explore new possibilities to further analyse fingermarks sampled from a crime scene. Indeed, the detection of chemicals a suspect has been in contact with before or during the crime can provide valuable insights into criminal investigations. In this regard, imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) has shown to be a powerful tool for the analysis of fingermarks by combining
