Student mental health nurses have greater patient contact than registered nurses, and this is appreciated by patients. This phenomenological study explored the impact of patients and student mental health nurses' time shared on forensic units for men carrying a personality disorder diagnosis. Phenomenology was the underpinning philosophy of this research. Patients and student mental health nurses in forensic hospitals participated in unstructured hermeneutic interviews. The time students and patients shared together was considered a gift, enabling them to feel that they were "just people" and

BackgroundThe use of seclusion and other restraints in forensic mental health settings are intended to be employed as a last resort and for the shortest time possible to achieve therapeutic effect. And yet, in Canadian forensic hospital settings, patients can remain in seclusion for weeks, months, even years. An ambiguous legal framework across Canadian provinces lacks mechanisms to limit or forbid the long-term seclusion of patients, which we define as any continuous confinement lasting 15 days or longer.Research objectivesThe paper undertakes a critical examination of long-term seclusion pra

The murder of patients entrusted to the care of healthcare professionals presents an exceptionally rare and complex scenario. The motivations of the perpetrators, usually termed "angels of death" by the media, are not uniform and are often intricate, resulting from a unique combination of individual factors. Among the most sinister motivations are the altruistic desire to end the suffering of severely ill patients-concealing narcissistic-omnipotent tendencies or pathological insecurity-or even the pursuit of pure sadistic gratification. Due to the unique and complex nature of this field, deter

AIMS: The aims of the study were to determine the types and prevalence of forensic mental health nurse exposure to patient aggression and explore the impact of these exposures on their physical and mental health and work absences.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey conducted January to April 2020.
METHODS: All 205 nurses working in an Australian high-security inpatient forensic mental health hospital were invited to participate. An online survey included the Perception of Prevalence of Aggression Scale to measure respondent exposure to types of patient aggression, and the SF-36v2 to measure ment

BACKGROUND: Infanticide, defined as the killing of a child under 1 year of age by their mother, is a rare and complex offence. In Canada and many other jurisdictions, infanticide is a gender-specific legal offence that can only be committed by women. The phenomenon is shaped by strongly gendered social and legal attitudes that influence perceptions of women convicted of infanticide.
AIM: To examine forensic psychiatric nurses' perspectives on the moral subjectivities of mothers convicted of infanticide.
METHODS: A critical discourse analysis, informed by feminist and poststructuralist theory

BACKGROUND: Indiana ranks among the highest in the nation for child abuse and neglect reports. Already facing a persistent shortage of sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) to serve patients across the life span, residents with medical forensic needs were often being referred to other hospitals across the state for care or simply were not receiving medical forensic examinations because of lack of access to trained examiners. The Indiana SANE Training Project was established to evaluate the forensic nursing workforce throughout Indiana and work to expand access to qualified SANEs through train

Background/Objectives: Nurses may support offense-related self-reflection through practices that extend beyond formal group programs and dedicated offense-focused interviews; however, the scope of such support remains unclear. In this study, we described the range of nursing practices that nurses in Japanese forensic psychiatric inpatient settings perceived as supporting offense-related self-reflection beyond these formal interventions. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted using individual semi-structured interviews with 13 nurses from six hospitals between May and November 2

BACKGROUND: Standards for sexual assault care include forensic examination, medical evaluation, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, crisis intervention, and referrals to supportive services. Care models have evolved, yet the current availability of care remains unclear.
AIM: To describe and compare the availability of post-sexual assault care across forensic nursing programs with previously published data.
METHODS: We used a cross-sectional survey to assess service provision among 104 programs in the United States and Canada.
RESULTS: Comparing services offered ev

Data on effects of strangulation in victims with a disability are lacking despite this population experiencing intimate partner violence at higher rates than women without a disability. A retrospective review was conducted on medical records of patients seeking care at a community-based, forensic nurse examiner program following an intimate partner violence-related strangulation event. The presence of disability was not associated with differences in reporting other types of victimization, additional abusive events, perpetrator characteristics, strangulation actions, or injury findings. BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is a profoundly disempowering experience. It is essential that survivors are offered access to comprehensive medical care, psychological support, and follow-up in a way that offers them a high level of choice and control.
AIMS: There has been little research into how practitioners working in the context of immediate postassault understand empowerment and reflect this in their care delivery. This study sought to explore how crisis support workers and forensic nurse examiners conceive how they enact an "empowerment approach" in a sexual assault referral center (SARC)

Food aspiration is one of the major health risks for elderly people in nursing homes which could lead to death. Moreover, misconducts in pharmacotherapy may represent a potential risk of adverse drug reactions. It is reported here the toxicological evaluation of a combined death by food aspiration and acute escitalopram intoxication of a psychiatric subject, occurred in a nursing home. An 89-year-old man, suffering from dysphagia and Alzheimer's, was resident in a nursing home. He was fed with a liquid diet administered directly in mouth using a syringe. The man was also being treated with esc

INTRODUCTION: Although pediatric sexual assault nurse examiners (P-SANEs) have been providing care for over two decades there remain major gaps in the literature describing the quality of P-SANE care and legal outcomes associated with their cases. The purpose of this study was to compare quality indicators of care in a pediatric emergency department (PED) before and after the implementation of a P-SANE program described in terms of trace forensic evidence yield, identification of perpetrator DNA, and judicial outcomes in pediatric acute sexual assault.
METHOD: A retrospective review of medica

BACKGROUND: Hostile behaviour by mental health care users (MHCUs) is prevalent in forensic units in South Africa, and this causes service providers distress and burnout. Psychiatric nurses (PNs) find it difficult to render quality care to MHCUs who are threatening them and also challenging their authority in a forensic unit. Forensic mental health care practitioners may be challenged to engage authentically with MHCUs who constitute a risk to their personal safety or who have committed acts the practitioner finds morally disturbing. There is a need to facilitate the mental health of PNs in a f

BACKGROUND: In 2017, a team of forensic nurses in Maryland launched the first known nurse-led and managed service delivery program designed to meet the unique medicoforensic needs of immigrant survivors, including asylum seekers, in their community. The expanded suite of services involved conducting forensic physical evaluations, which included medicolegal history-taking, head-to-toe forensic physical assessment, photodocumentation, and presentation of related findings in the form of written affidavits for use in applications for legal reliefs in immigration court (e.g., asylum, T or U visas,

BACKGROUND: Telehealth technology can expand access to expert sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) care in rural and underserved areas. Research previously demonstrated that telehealth-supported sexual assault nurse examiner (teleSANE) intervention led to changes in examination methods and evidence collection practices among a pediatric population; however, little is known about the impact of the intervention on changes among adolescent and adult victims of sexual assault (SA). The purpose of this study is to examine how SAFE-T SystemTM teleSANE consultations influence medical forensic examina

BACKGROUND: Nonfatal strangulation has been identified as a common occurrence in intimate partner violence and can be associated with significant injuries and, at times, increased mortality.
OBJECTIVE: This article describes a county interagency nonfatal strangulation initiative that efficiently disseminated an educational program for police, emergency medical services, emergency department staff, forensic nursing teams, and prosecuting attorneys, along with a forensic nurse response program. Prior to initiation of this program, no educational programs existed and no forensic examinations wer

This is a conceptual article exploring global voyeurism and service, overlaying ethical considerations in service within the profession of forensic nursing. Key elements considered include examining and reflecting on personal motivations, benefits, and consequences of service when viewed through an ethical perspective. Through this article we seek to examine the relationships between poverty tourism and service, while better supporting individual forensic nurses in their quest to align their actions with the ethical and practice comportment standards within the profession of nursing service gl

Tensions between therapeutic and security needs on forensic wards can create a social climate which is challenging for both mental health nurses and patients. Social climate refers to the physical, social and emotional conditions of a forensic ward which influence how these environments are experienced. For patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), previous trauma means that the social climate of forensic settings may be experienced as retraumatising, negatively impacting the outcomes and wellbeing of both patients and mental health nurses. Trauma-informed care (TIC) has been offere

Clearly communicating with other professionals and with sexual assault survivors about the boundaries and imitations of the SANE medical-forensic examination is important. Although SANEs work cooperatively in an interdisciplinary sexual assault response team model to better meet the needs of sexual assault victims, they function as independent professional nurses in their role of collecting medical forensic evidence. Properly defined to focus on assessment, identification, and documentation of trauma, the SANE role is an independent professional role but is still within the scope of basic nurs
