BACKGROUND: In 1987, three unrelated English families were reported with a putative blood subgroup called Apae. Swedish researchers later found evidence leading to abolishment of the Apae subgroup and establishment instead of the FORS blood group system (System 31 - ISBT, 2012). It is important to know the prevalence of antibodies in order to make the best decisions in transfusion medicine. Cells expressing the Forssman saccharide, such as sheep erythrocytes, are needed to detect the anti-Forssman antibody. The aim of this study was to define the prevalence of human anti-Forssman antibody.

By serological methods, all 83 known types of Streptococcus pneumoniae could be shown to possess C polysaccharide and F antigen. Cross-reactions due to these two antigens between pneumococci and a broad range of most other commonly encountered streptococci were examined. The presence of an antigen closely similar or identical to pneumococcal C polysaccharide was demonstrated in some strains of Streptococcus mitior. An antigen was detected in pooled human nephroblastomas using antiserum prepared in rabbits against an ethylemediaminetetra acetic acid (EDTA) extract of the tumors. Forssman shock (FS) following the intravenous injection of antisheep erythrocyte antibody into guinea pigs resulted in fatal systemic shock with marked decrease in CH50 values of complement, leucocyte, and platelet counts, and a prolongation of blood coagulation time. BACKGROUND: N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) is generated by hydroxylation of CMP-Neu5Ac to CMP-Neu5Gc, catalyzed by CMP-Neu5Ac hydroxylase (CMAH). However, humans lack this common mammalian cell surface molecule, Neu5Gc, due to inactivation of the CMAH gene during evolution. CMAH is one of several human-specific genes whose function has been lost by disruption or deletion of the coding frame. It has been suggested that CMAH inactivation has resulted in biochemical or physiological characteristics that have resulted in human-specific diseases.

The involvement of the complement system and platelets in the sublethal Forssman reaction in the guinea pig has been studied together with the ultrastructural changes observed in the endothelial cells of the pulmonary vasculature. Studies were performed in in vitro and in vivo models to assess the effect of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) on the development of acute complement-mediated tissue damage. Absorption studies were performed to analyse the properties of heterophile antibodies in Japanese sera. The conventional absorption test using ox erythrocytes and guinea pig kidney tissues classified 28 of 3570 pathologic sera and 12 of 19 IM-like syndrome sera into 2 categories of Forssman type and Hanganutziu Deicher type.
