Foster home care for the elderly, as an alternative to living independently, living with relatives or living in an institution, has been a neglected area of investigation, although such care is a nationwide phenomenon. This survey of all licensed Family Care Home operators in the Louisville, Kentucky area provides baseline data regarding the characteristics of providers of adult foster care and the recipients. Data were obtained from 183 persons caring for minimally impaired adults in their own homes and on 422 residents in these foster home settings. Of the residents, 69.5 percent were aged 6

BACKGROUND: Social support is commonly examined as a protective factor for children with a history of child maltreatment, and it has been measured by self-report via the Social Support Scale for Children (SSSC). Although the SSSC has established adequate reliability and validity in community and clinical samples, its psychometric properties have yet to be assessed in a sample of foster care youth.
OBJECTIVE: This study provided a psychometric comparison of the SSSC in youth residing in foster care with youth residing in the community.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants were two, comparab

Children in foster care are at risk of developing insecure and disorganized attachment, which is problematic for establishing new relationships in foster families. However, most previous studies have focused on attachment behaviors in young children rather than on attachment representations. We compared foster children's attachment representations with those of a community group, analyzing also the contribution made by different factors to foster children's attachment representations. We assessed the attachment representations of 109 children aged between 4 and 9 years (51 children in non-kin

The inpatient treatment of youth in care with severe emotional or behavioral disorders is complicated by systemic factors unique to foster care, for example, placement shortages and relinquishment of custody, and clinically by factors more prevalent in these highly vulnerable youth such as in utero exposure to alcohol, exposure to domestic violence, neglect, and physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. The authors discuss prolonged lengths of stay and boarding in emergency rooms, medical units, government offices, and detention centers. We also discuss working with foster families, biological fa

The foster home care system is the most commonly used alternative for the care of dependent children in the United States. However, it often fails to achieve its objective of returning the child to his home or providing a permanent substitute family. Children entering foster care have frequently suffered social, emotional, and medical neglect, and physical abuse. They have a high rate of chronic medical problems, educational handicaps, and severe emotional impairment. In many cases the health care that foster children receive fails to recognize and/or adequately address their disabilities. In

Given the concerns raised regarding the effects of prenatal exposure to methadone and buprenorphine on the developmental outcomes of the children, this study assessed mental health and use of services in a national sample of school-aged children (N = 78) born to women enrolled in opioid maintenance treatment during pregnancy, compared with a group of foster children (N = 140). The majority of the opioid-exposed children lived with their birth parent(s) at the time of assessment (N = 62), while 16 lived in foster homes. Caregivers completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review was to describe the characteristics of interventions and programs that support the health and development of infants in foster care who have prenatal substance exposure, their foster care providers, and birth families.
INTRODUCTION: Infants in foster care may have experienced prenatal substance exposure, neglect, and maltreatment, as well as disruptions in their relationships with primary caregivers. Despite multiple vulnerabilities, they also have great capacity for overcoming early adversities. Enhanced foster care has been identified as a key

BACKGROUND: There has been a limited understanding of the longitudinal trajectory and determinants of socio-emotional outcomes among children in out-of-home care (OOHC).
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine child socio-demographics, pre-care maltreatment, placement, and caregiver factors associated with trajectories of socio-emotional difficulties of children in OOHC.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study sample (n = 345) included data from the Pathways of Care Longitudinal Study (POCLS), a prospective longitudinal cohort of children aged 3-17 years who entered the OOHC system in New South

BACKGROUND: It is largely unknown whether symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity of foster children decline over time after placement and what the role of the quality and stability of the foster placement is on the course of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptom trajectories. Longitudinal studies of normative trajectories of symptom types in nonreferred children may assist in appropriately diagnosing ADHD and designing the clinical treatment for foster children.
OBJECTIVE: We described average level and slope of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity sympto

BACKGROUND: Foster youth placed in congregate care often report more risk and fewer protective factors for mental health compared to foster youth residing in other settings.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to address a gap in the literature by examining how childhood trauma and perceived social support are associated with depressive symptoms among youth with histories of residential care or group home placement.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Secondary analysis was employed using data from the "Voyages" study. Foster youth (N = 404) completed a battery of surveys including demographics, placement hist

BACKGROUND: Achieving safe and stable placements is a key mission for the foster care system. Foster parents and social workers are part of a caregiving network with responsibility for the child and their wellbeing. Emotionally dysregulated children's behaviors may pose a challenge to the caregiving system. Trauma-informed care (TIC) interventions aim at enhancing caregivers' understanding of such behaviors and underlying emotions.
OBJECTIVE: The present study explored the experiences of foster parents and social workers who attended TIC training together, with a special focus on their collab

This clinical report and its accompanying policy statement review the developmental challenges of young children in foster care under the age of 5 years, including recent research on prenatal and postnatal environmental influences on early brain development, and the effects of severe or chronic stress on child development secondary to neglect, physical and sexual abuse. This report also highlights the impact of family disruption and child-parent attachment that occurs with foster care placement, the effects of structural and interpersonal racism, multigenerational poverty, and the more pervasi

BACKGROUND: Immunizations represent a critical component of contemporary preventive measures. Their primary function is to safeguard against the development of diseases and the ensuing complications.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of the measles, mumps, and rubella immunization program on the population of children in Poland from 2014 to 2021.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The vaccination rate against measles, mumps and rubella in the population aged 1-19 years was calculated. The numerator was the number of children vaccinated in a given year and the denominator w

OBJECTIVE: Research is required to better understand the experience and effectiveness of dyadic developmental psychotherapy (DDP), a promising intervention developed to meet the complex needs of developmental trauma-experienced children in substitute care. DDP is a systemic intervention, within which the child's carer plays a significant role. Given their significant role and the lack of existing research, this study aimed to explore how foster carers experience DDP.
DESIGN: A qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with 10 foster carers was implemented.
METHOD: Interviews conduc

BACKGROUND: Interplay of risk and protective factors influence longer-term outcomes for children in out-of-home care.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Pathways of Care Longitudinal Study (POCLS) data were used to explore how child and birth family factors interact to influence wellbeing and placement stability over time.
METHODS: Cluster analysis identified three groups of children differentiated on demographic characteristics on entry in care. Latent growth curve modelling was used to compare changes in children's cognitive functioning, socio-emotional wellbeing, and health over time.
RESULTS: Th

The majority of children living in foster care in the United States have a history of maltreatment and/or disrupted caregiving. Maltreatment in early childhood adversely affects development at many levels, including neurobiology and behavior. One neurobiological measure associated with maltreatment is alpha electroencephalogram (EEG) asymmetry. Prior research has found greater right frontal asymmetry among children with a history of maltreatment. However, little research has been extended developmentally downward to examine alpha asymmetry and its behavioral correlates among toddlers in foster

Adverse developmental outcomes for some children following institutional care are well established. Removal from institutional care and placement into families can promote recovery. However, little is known about how positive outcomes are sustained across adolescence among children with histories of severe deprivation. The present study examined the caregiving conditions that are associated with attaining and maintaining competent functioning (i.e., outcomes within typical levels) from middle childhood to adolescence following exposure to early institutional care. The participants included chi

OBJECTIVE: Youth who emancipate from the foster care system often experience poor outcomes during their transition into independent living (e.g., criminal justice involvement and homelessness). Yet, some youth are resilient and achieve positive outcomes. The purpose of this study is to review the resilience factors identified in the literature for youth transitioning out of care.
METHOD: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using PsycINFO, PubMed, and EMBASE databases. A total of 12 studies met our inclusion criteria.
RESULTS: A total of 38 different resilience factors were id

This study examined whether a multi-domain model of maltreatment informed by an ecological framework-including factors related to the child, caregiver, family, neighborhood, and dimensions of maltreatment experience-predicted entry into foster care between the ages of 4 and 18 among children with no prior foster care experience. To determine which factors predict entry into foster care, secondary data analyses were conducted utilizing a sub-sample from LONGSCAN (Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect) of 942 children and their primary caregivers. Results demonstrate that there are imp
