Fatal subcutaneous aspergillosis following necrotizing fasciitis: a case report.

Skin or subcutaneous infection with aspergillus is uncommon. It has been described in disseminated aspergillosis, as localized infection in the immunocompromised host and as a complication of trauma and burns. Described in this paper is a diabetic patient who developed a fatal Aspergillus infection following debridement of a necrotizing fasciitis. "Fruiting bodies," rarely found in vivo, were seen on pathologic examination of subcutaneous tissue. Her course was similar to that of burn patients with invasive fungal disease, where mortality is high and radical debridement is the only chance for

First Report of Acrostalagmus luteo-albus Causing Red Rust of Needle Mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) in China.

Needle mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) is an edible and medicinal mushroom with annual production yields for China exceeding 2 million metric tons. Hebei province is one of the biggest producers of needle mushrooms in China. From 2009 to 2010, red rust-colored sporulation (fungal mycelia and conidia) was found on the substrate surface of white needle mushroom bags in more than 10 mushroom cultivation operations in Hebei. The rust-colored sporulation covered the substrate surface, where the development of the fruiting bodies was inhibited; the stipes were sparse and became light brown when the

An axenic culture system for fruiting body formation by an edible bolete phylogenetically related to culinary-medicinal penny bun mushroom, Boletus edulis Bull.:Fr. strains from China.

The ability of two freshly isolated Boletus stains to fruit under axenic conditions was tested using different solid and liquid nutrient media. One strain (YNCX04) produced numerous primordia from which fruiting bodies, 12 mm and 10 mm in length, with grey, convex pilei, and yellow-white, clavate stipes developed between 15 and 30 d after inoculation of fungal mycelium onto a solid medium consisting of mineral salts, thiamine, glucose, potato, an extract of Cunninghamia lanceolata root, and agar. The other strain (YNB200) produced numerous primordia but no sporophores. Strain YNCX04 lost the a

Straw return is associated with improved morel cultivation performance and with changes in soil quality and microbial communities.

Returning crop straw to soil is a cornerstone practice for sustaining soil quality in grain cropping systems, yet its application to edible fungal cultivation has received comparatively little attention. Here we report a field study of rice straw incorporation in morel (Morchella sextelata) production, conducted across two cultivation sites, Xindu and Santai, in Sichuan, China. Five treatments differing in straw physical form were compared. The results showed that morel performance differed with straw physical form rather than with the presence of straw alone. Fruiting bodies formed only at th

Influence of Pleurotus sapidus fruiting bodies on the performance, cecal microbiome, and gene expression in the liver and breast muscle of broilers.

Mushrooms, the fruiting bodies of edible fungi, are widely used as food for humans. However, their potential, as well as that of fungal mycelia, as feed components for poultry is less acknowledged. Recent studies have shown that feeding the vegetative mycelium of Pleurotus sapidus does not affect growth performance or nutrient digestibility and causes only minimal changes in the cecal microbiota structure, liver transcriptome, and plasma metabolome of broilers. The present study aimed to comprehensively investigate the effects of feeding the fruiting bodies of P. sapidus on performance metrics

A convenient separation strategy for fungal anthraquinones by centrifugal partition chromatography.

As recently shown, some fungal pigments exhibit significant photoactivity turning them into promising agents for the photodynamic treatment of microbial infections or malignant diseases. In the present study, a separation strategy for fungal anthraquinones was developed based on centrifugal partition chromatography. A suitable method was explored employing a methanolic extract of the fruiting bodies of Cortinarius sanguineus (Agaricales, Basidiomycota). An excellent fractionation was achieved using a biphasic solvent system comprising chloroform/ethyl acetate/methanol/water/acetic acid (3:1:3:

Rhenium in Wild Mushrooms: Environmental Occurrence and Censoring-Aware Quantification.

Rhenium (Re) is a scarce technology-critical transition metal used in high-temperature superalloys, catalysts and other advanced materials, yet its occurrence in terrestrial biota and potential relevance to environmental exposure remains poorly characterised. This study investigated total Re in wild mushroom fruiting bodies collected from selected green spaces in Leicester and Leicestershire, United Kingdom, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and censoring-aware statistical analysis. The analytical dataset comprised 157 records. After exclusion of four unmatched tissue

Challenge of identifying a case of chronic invasive rhinosinusitis due to Rasamsonia aegroticola.

Fungal rhinosinusitis are frequently described in humans and its prevalence appears to be increasing. They mainly involve species of the genus Aspergillus. To date, conventional mycological diagnosis remains challenging, as only 30% and 50% of cultures are positive in cases of fungal balls and invasive rhinosinusitis respectively. Over the past decade, human infections due to the Rasamsonia argillacea species complex are increasingly frequent and mainly concern patients with cystic fibrosis or chronic granulomatous disease. We report here the first case of pseudotumoral R. aegroticola sinusiti

Toward Standardized Products Containing Biomass of Psilocybe Cubensis Fungi.

BACKGROUND: The consumption of dried fruiting bodies of Psilocybe cubensis can be traced over centuries, guided by Mesoamerican curanderas, Western medical practitioners, and fungal enthusiasts, all seeking mental wellbeing. There is a notable resurgence in interest both in the fungal biomass and psilocybin, the psychoactive tryptamine, despite the global regulatory restrictions, following enlistment in the UN convention on psychotropic substances. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate consistency in psilocybin potency and to determine levels of microbial, pesticidal, and heavy metal content in products en

Isolation and identification of yeasts from UTI patient's exhibit susceptibility to Agaricus gennadii extract.

Antifungal resistance represents a major clinical challenge to clinicians responsible for treating invasive fungal infections due to the limited arsenal of systemically available antifungal agents. Currently, fungal invasive infections are related to antifungal resistance by pathogenic fungi. The current study assumed to use of natural ingredients such as the fruiting bodies of large fungi, specifically Agaricus gennadii. This study is also a new initial step in the field of producing an antifungal that has a promising and safe future. However, most of the used antifungals such as polyenes, az

Distribution and molecular profile of betaine lipids in basidiomycete fungi.

Betaine lipids are non-phosphorus glycerolipids found across diverse organisms, including bacteria, algae, ferns, and certain fungi, and are capable of substituting phospholipids under phosphate deficiency. Their distribution in the Basidiomycota division of fungi remains enigmatic. This study presents the first comprehensive survey of diacylglyceryl-N,N,N-trimethylhomoserine (DGTS) distribution in both natural fruiting bodies and pure cultures of over 150 fungal species. Comparative lipid analysis of fungal mycelium grown on complete versus phosphorus-depleted media revealed that DGTS biosynt

Taxonomy, Biological Characterization, and Fungicide Sensitivity of a New Species, Cladobotryum hypsigum, Causing Cobweb Disease in Gold Mushroom (Pholiota conissans) in China.

Pholiota conissans is an economically important edible mushroom in China; however, its production has been severely impacted by cobweb disease during the fruiting stage, leading to substantial yield losses. In this study, a fungal pathogen was identified as the causal agent of cobweb disease. The strains were isolated from infected fruiting bodies collected in November 2021 and were identified as a new species Cladobotryum hypsigum sp. nov., based on morphological characteristics and a multi-locus phylogenetic analysis of four gene regions (ITS, RPB1, RPB2, and TEF). Pathogenicity tests were c

Microbial interactions mediate the fairy ring type effects on alpine meadow plant communities on the Tibetan plateau.

The Fairy ring (FR) is a circular formation created by the mycelium of the FR fungus during its dynamic proliferation in the soil. FRs were categorized into three types based on their varying effects on adjacent plants. Type I FRs (T1) cause extensive damage with wilting and necrosis, Type II FRs (T2) promote growth with dark-green zones, and Type III FRs (T3) feature fruiting bodies with minimal impact on vegetation. T2 FR often display conspicuous growth-promoting zones and thus are studied more frequently than other types. Here we compare three FR types-Agrocybe sp. (T1), Agaricus campestri

The hypothermic nature of fungi.

Fungi play essential roles in global health, ecology, and economy, but their thermal biology is relatively unexplored. Mushrooms, the fruiting body of mycelium, were previously noticed to be colder than surrounding air through evaporative cooling. Here, we confirm those observations using infrared thermography and report that this hypothermic state is also observed in mold and yeast colonies. The relatively colder temperature of yeasts and molds is also mediated via evaporative cooling and associated with the accumulation of condensed water droplets on plate lids above colonies. The colonies a

Functional characterization of fungal laccases via siRNA silencing enables targeted biodegradation.

Edible fungi serve as efficient bioconverters, transforming lignocellulosic wastes into valuable fungal proteins by extracellular enzyme systems (e.g., laccases). However, the functional characterization of these lignocellulolytic enzymes is still a major challenge, limiting the strategic application of fungal systems in targeted biodegradation. Here, we developed a versatile, non-transformative siRNA delivery platform for rapid gene function analysis in the edible fungus Pleurotus ostreatus. Using spray-induced (SIGS) in mycelia, injection-induced (IIGS) in fruiting bodies, and co-culture-ind
