Antioxidant Effect of a Fucus vesiculosus Extract on Intestinal Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Rats: A Biochemical and Histological Study.

Fucus vesiculosus is a brown seaweed known for its strong antioxidant properties, mainly attributed to its high polyphenolic content. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant protective effect of an optimised F. vesiculosus extract in an experimental model of intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, considering the intestine as particularly vulnerable to this pathology. Seventy-two male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into twelve groups: Sham, I/R groups (3 and 24 h reperfusion), I/R plus vehicle groups (three application times, 3 h reperfusion), and I/R plus F. vesiculosus e

Evolutionary dynamics of sex-biased gene expression in a young XY system: insights from the brown alga genus Fucus.

Sex-biased gene expression is considered to be an underlying cause of sexually dimorphic traits. Although the nature and degree of sex-biased expression have been well documented in several animal and plant systems, far less is known about the evolution of sex-biased genes in more distant eukaryotic groups. Here, we investigate sex-biased gene expression in two brown algal dioecious species, Fucus serratus and Fucus vesiculosus, where male heterogamety (XX/XY) has recently emerged. We find that in contrast to evolutionary distant plant and animal lineages, male-biased genes do not experience h

Fucoidan Extracted from Fucus vesiculosus Ameliorates Colitis-Associated Neuroinflammation and Anxiety-like Behavior in Adult C57BL/6 Mice.

Fucoidan, a complex sulfated polysaccharide derived from marine brown seaweeds, exhibits broad biological activities, including anticoagulant, antitumor, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering effects. Fucoidan confers neuroprotection in animal models of a broad spectrum of brain disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and depression. However, the effect of fucoidan on gut-derived neuroinflammation and associated behavioral changes has been scarcely investigated. In comparison to fucoidan from other brown seaweeds, that from Fucus vesiculosus exhibited a better neuroprotective effe

Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus Extracts Improved Lipid Metabolism and Inflammation in High-Energy Diet-Induced Hyperlipidemia Rats.

Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus both contain unique polyphenols called phlorotannins. Phlorotannins reportedly possess various pharmacological activities. A previous study reported that the activity of phlorotannin is strongly correlated with the normalization of metabolic function, and phlorotannins are extremely promising nutrients for use in the treatment of metabolic syndrome. To date, no study has explored the antihyperlipidemic effects of phlorotannins from A. nodosum and F. vesiculosus in animal models. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the effects of phlorotann

Simultaneous bioremediation of cationic copper ions and anionic methyl orange azo dye by brown marine alga Fucus vesiculosus.

Textile wastewater contains large quantities of azo dyes mixed with various contaminants especially heavy metal ions. The discharge of effluents containing methyl orange (MO) dye and Cu2+ ions into water is harmful because they have severe toxic effects to humans and the aquatic ecosystem. The dried algal biomass was used as a sustainable, cost-effective and eco-friendly for the treatment of the textile wastewater. Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to identify the most significant factors for achieving maximum biosorption of Cu2+ and MO from aqueous solutions using marine alga Fucus vesiculosu

In Vitro Anti-Orthohantavirus Activity of the High-and Low-Molecular-Weight Fractions of Fucoidan from the Brown Alga Fucus evanescens.

The Hantaan orthohantavirus (genovariant Amur-AMRV) is a rodent-borne zoonotic virus; it is the causative agent of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in humans. The currently limited therapeutic options require the development of effective anti-orthohantavirus drugs. The ability of native fucoidan from Fucus evanescens (FeF) and its enzymatically prepared high-molecular-weight (FeHMP) and low-molecular-weight (FeLMP) fractions to inhibit different stages of AMRV infection in Vero cells was studied. The structures of derivatives obtained were determined using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR

Pretreatment with Fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus Protected against ConA-Induced Acute Liver Injury by Inhibiting Both Intrinsic and Extrinsic Apoptosis.

This study aimed to explore the effects of fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus on concanavalin A (ConA)-induced acute liver injury in mice. Pretreatment with fucoidan protected liver function indicated by ALT, AST and histopathological changes by suppressing inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ). In addition, intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis mediated by Bax, Bid, Bcl-2, Bcl-xL and Caspase 3, 8, and 9 were inhibited by fucoidan and the action was associated with the TRADD/TRAF2 and JAK2/STAT1 signal pathways. Our results demonstrated that

Targeted ileal microbiome modulation by in ovo seaweed polyphenols (Fucus spiralis) as an alternative to in-feed antibiotics in broiler chickens.

Managing gut health is a priority for the poultry industry, and nutritional provision during early life may facilitate positive, lasting modulation of the gut microbiome. This study evaluated the effects of in ovo seaweed (Fucus spiralis) and green tea (Camellia sinensis) polyphenols on the ileal and cecal microbiome of broiler chickens using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. On embryonic day 17.5, viable embryos received one of four treatments via the amniotic route (50 µL): (1) standard control (no injection), (2) diluent control, (3) seaweed polyphenols (2.5 mg/egg), or (4) tea polyphenols (2.5

Chemical structure and P-selectin inhibition of two linear and highly regular homofucans from the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus.

Fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus is historically significant but possesses a highly heterogeneous structure that has long obscured its precise chemical nature and structure-activity relationships (SAR). In this study, two homofucans, FS-I and FS-II (at a weight ratio of 1:2.7), were purified from commercial F. vesiculosus fucoidan via fractional ethanol precipitation and ion-exchange chromatography. Comprehensive 1D/2D NMR analysis of the native polymers, their peroxidative depolymerized products, and oligosaccharides from acid hydrolysis established that both are highly ordered linear polymers

Role of external carbonic anhydrase in light-dependent alkalization by Fucus serratus L. and Laminaria saccharina (L.) Lamour. (Phaeophyta).

It has been proposed that many marine macroalgae are able to utilize HCO 3 (-) for photosynthesis and growth, and that energy-dependent ion pumping is involved in this process. We have therefore studied the light-dependent alkalization of the surrounding medium by two species of marine macroscopic brown algae, Fucus serratus L. and Laminaria saccharina (L.) Lamour. with the aim of investigating the role of extracellular carbonic anhydrase (EC 4.2.1.1.) in the assimilation of inorganic carbon from the seawater medium. In particular, the influence of membrane-impermeable or slowly permeable carb

Assessment of the effect of Fucus vesiculosus extract on the labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m and the histological modifications on the shape of the red blood cells.

Natural products are widely used as food or food additives or medicines for humans. We are trying to develop a model to assess the possible toxic properties of natural products, such as Fucus vesiculosus, utilized in popular medicine. Red blood cells (RBC) labeled with technetium-99m (99mTc) are used in various procedures in nuclear medicine. This labeling procedure depends on a reducing agent, and stannous chloride is used. There is evidence that this labeling may be altered by drugs. We have investigated the possibility that F. vesiculosus extract is capable of altering the labeling of blood

Crude Fucus vesiculosus fucoidan demonstrates superior SARS-CoV-2 antiviral activity compared to its pure form: binding kinetics and functional studies.

Fucoidans have been widely reported to show SARS-CoV-2 antiviral activity. In this study, we observed a striking difference in the inhibitory potency between two commercially available fucoidans: Fucus vesiculosus crude (Fvc) and pure (Fvp). SEC-MALS analysis revealed two molecular weight populations for Fvc (1098 kDa, 58.58 kDa) and one for Fvp (40.48 kDa). At micromolar concentrations of fucoidans, the binding affinities (KDs) of Fvc_1098 (223 nM) and Fvc_58 (4.27 μM) for the amine-biotinylated SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain (RBD) were higher than that of Fvp (76.5 μM). The Identification of Peptide Inhibitors of the Coronavirus 3CL Protease from a Fucus ceranoides L. Hydroalcoholic Extract Using a Ligand-Fishing Strategy.

Brown seaweeds of the Fucus genus represent a rich source of natural antiviral products. In this study, a Fucus ceranoides hydroalcoholic extract (FCHE) was found to inhibit 74.2 ± 1.3% of the proteolytic activity of the free SARS-CoV-2 3CL protease (3CLpro), an enzyme that plays a pivotal role in polyprotein processing during coronavirus replication and has been identified as a relevant drug discovery target for SARS- and MERS-CoVs infections. To purify and identify 3CLpro ligands with potential inhibitory activity using a one-step approach, we immobilized the enzyme onto magnetic microbeads

Protective effect of fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus on liver fibrosis via the TGF-β1/Smad pathway-mediated inhibition of extracellular matrix and autophagy.

Liver fibrosis is a dynamic reversible pathological process in the development of chronic liver disease to cirrhosis. However, the current treatments are not administered for a long term due to their various side effects. Autophagy is initiated to decompose damaged or excess organelles, which had been found to alter the progression of liver fibrosis. In this article, we hypothesized that fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus may attenuate liver fibrosis in mice by inhibition of the extracellular matrix and autophagy in carbon tetrachloride- and bile duct ligation-induced animal models of liver fibro

The effect of Fucus vesiculosus, an edible brown seaweed, upon menstrual cycle length and hormonal status in three pre-menopausal women: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Rates of estrogen-dependent cancers are among the highest in Western countries and lower in the East. These variations may be attributable to differences in dietary exposures such as higher seaweed consumption among Asian populations. The edible brown kelp, Fucus vesiculosus (bladderwrack), as well as other brown kelp species, lower plasma cholesterol levels. Since cholesterol is a precursor to sex hormone biosynthesis, kelp consumption may alter circulating sex hormone levels and menstrual cycling patterns. In particular, dietary kelp may be beneficial to women with or at high ris
