The use of natural products for therapeutic purposes is a common practice since the beginning of time, as it was already known that they contained biological components beneficial to health, which also justifies the growing demand for products made from Amazonian raw materials. The accessibility to information and an aggressive marketing favored the consumption of these products globally. However, the legislation in different countries on how to obtain plant raw materials, process them and subsequently sell them can leave gaps and doubts leading the consumer to make mistakes. This may interfer

Reactive free radicals can be produced in the skin by the action of environmental factors, such as sun radiation and toxins. These radicals can damage the DNA, proteins and lipids of the living cells. The consequences can be skin aging, immune suppression and even skin cancer. Humans have developed a protective mechanism against the action of free radicals in the form of antioxidant substances. Several of these antioxidants cannot be produced by humans and have to be acquired via food, such as carotenoids. Optical, non-invasive methods, like resonance Raman spectroscopy, allow a qualitative an

IMPORTANCE: Evidence from diverse global populations suggests that household food insecurity (HFI) is associated with adult disability, but the association between household water insecurity (HWI) and disability remains understudied. Examinations of the joint association of dual HFI and HWI with disability are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To explore independent and joint associations of HFI and HWI with functional disability in Ecuadorian adults.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used data from the 2018 Ecuadorian National Health and Nutrition Survey, a nationally represen

The growing consumer interest in functional foods and healthy eating can unfortunately lead to the spread of misinformation and the belief in food-related myths. This study analyzed Brazilian consumers' perceptions and beliefs about facts and myths regarding functional foods, focusing on attitudes, reference groups, and sociocultural factors affecting their perception. A theoretical model was developed, incorporating constructs such as attitudes (reward, trust, necessity, safety), beliefs, and reference groups. Data from 600 participants in the Southeast (n = 300) and Northeast (n = 300) of Br

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common esophageal disorder characterized by troublesome symptoms associated with increased esophageal acid exposure. The cornerstones of therapy in this regard include treatment with acid-suppressive agents, lifestyle modifications, and dietary therapy, although the latter has not been well defined. As concerns regarding long-term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use continue to be explored, patients and healthcare providers are becoming increasingly interested in the role of diet in disease management. However, dietary interventions lack evidence of the

Few other aspects of food supply and metabolism are of greater biological importance than the feeding of mothers during pregnancy and lactation, and of their infants and young children. Nutritional factors during early development not only have short-term effects on growth, body composition and body functions but also exert long-term effects on health, disease and mortality risks in adulthood, as well as development of neural functions and behaviour, a phenomenon called 'metabolic programming'. The interaction of nutrients and gene expression may form the basis of many of these programming eff

This paper assesses critically the science base that underpins the argument that oxidative damage is a significant causative factor in the development of human diseases and that antioxidants are capable of preventing or ameliorating these disease processes. The assessment has been carried out under a number of headings, and some recommendations for future research are made based on the present day knowledge base. The knowledge database (1) Consideration of the basic science that underlies understanding of the role of free radicals in causing cellular pathologies, and the role of antioxidants i

Recently, the focus of scientific investigations has moved from the primary role of food as the source of energy and body-forming substances to the more subtle action of biologically active food components on human health. There has been an explosion of consumer interest in the active role of food in the well-being and life prolongation, as well as in the prevention of initiation, promotion, and development of nontransmissible chronic diseases. As a result, a new term-functional food-was proposed. Among these foods, probiotics may exert positive effects on the composition of gut microbiota and

Hyperlipidemia is one of the major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. Hypolipidemic nutraceuticals and functional foods help improve serum lipid profiles as reducing total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, while elevating high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The effectiveness of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, phytosterols, dietary fiber, and tea catechin in management of hyperlipidemia has been clearly demonstrated in epidemiological and interventional trials. Studies on mechanism reveal that they act as inhibitor or activator of

Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks second for incidence in females (third in males). Currently, a broad spectrum of treatment options exists for the treatment of colorectal tumors. However, existing therapeutic options often lead to trauma, side effects, and high cost. Hence, there is an ongoing quest to detect novel approaches for the treatment of colon cancer. Recently, multiple studies have reported that consuming functional foods that are loaded with natural compounds can prevent the risk of CRC. In this review, the authors have attempted to collect information about the best possible foods and

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Over the past 10 years, there has been a dramatic increase in basic and clinical research involving functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). New diagnostic and biomarker procedures are helping to identify physiologic disruptions associated with FGIDs on cellular and molecular levels. Simultaneously, clinicians are using new approaches to help manage patients with FGIDs. Among these, an important component of care has been the use of medical foods. These include probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, peppermint oil, caraway oil, curcumin, bovine immunoglobulin and many oth

The concept of Functional Food originates in a research project started in 1984. It triggered the introduction of a health claim system for Foods for Specified Health Uses (FOSHU) in 1991. In parallel with the implementation and subsequent regulatory changes, the administration has been intensifying its control over so-called health foods and the FOSHU examination has become more stringent. In spite of the unfavorable regulatory circumstances, being inspired by academic society, many of the food industries have developed functional foods and launched them into the market as FOSHU products to b

Functional food ingredients are prone to poor stability and low bioavailability during processing, storage, and digestion, which limits their functional efficacy and thus drives the development of efficient delivery carriers. By regulating the molecular structure of polysaccharides (including glycosidic bonds, degree of branching, molecular weight and its distribution, and chain conformation), polysaccharide-based microgel carriers with targeted properties can be constructed under different induction conditions. Furthermore, functional ingredients can be encapsulated via self-assembly, physica

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common disorder of gut-brain interaction that impairs quality of life (QoL).1 Its pathophysiology is complex and incompletely understood. Recent studies suggest duodenal low-grade inflammation and increased permeability may contribute, although triggers remain unclear, potentially involving luminal antigens such as food or microbial components.2-5 Exclusion diets, including low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) or gluten-free, have been attempted, but no standardized therapy exists. In eosinophilic esophagitis, the

Coffee is a popular and widely consumed beverage worldwide, with epidemiological studies showing reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, cancers and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. However, few studies have investigated the health effects of the post-brewing coffee product, spent coffee grounds (SCG), from either hot- or cold-brew coffee. SCG from hot-brew coffee improved metabolic parameters in rats with diet-induced metabolic syndrome and improved gut microbiome in these rats and in humans; further, SCG reduced energy consumption in humans. SCG contains similar bioactive compounds as the

The global demand for sustainable, nutritious, and environmentally responsible food systems has accelerated the development of plant-based protein gels designed to replicate the sensory, nutritional, and functional characteristics of conventional animal-derived products. This transition is driven by increasing concerns regarding environmental impact, resource utilization, health, and ethical sustainability associated with animal protein production. While existing reviews primarily address isolated aspects of plant proteins or gelation mechanisms, this review provides an integrated and applicat
