Individual architecture of subgingival microflora in chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 400 species of bacteria have been found in human periodontal pockets, and half of them remain uncultured to date. The diagnosis of individual periodontal microflora using culture-independent detection of species is expected to serve as a tool for 'tailor-made' periodontal treatments. However, the richness and abundance of bacterial species within individual subgingival microflora have not been sufficiently studied to develop more specific diagnostic microbiological tests. The purpose of this study was to determine the ecological architecture of the subgingival microflora amo

Complete genome sequence of Streptobacillus moniliformis type strain (9901).

Streptobacillus moniliformis Levaditi et al. 1925 is the type and sole species of the genus Streptobacillus, and is of phylogenetic interest because of its isolated location in the sparsely populated and neither taxonomically nor genomically much accessed family 'Leptotrichiaceae' within the phylum Fusobacteria. The 'Leptotrichiaceae' have not been well characterized, genomically or taxonomically. S. moniliformis,is a Gram-negative, non-motile, pleomorphic bacterium and is the etiologic agent of rat bite fever and Haverhill fever. Strain 9901(T), the type strain of the species, was isolated fr

Stratification of Fusobacterium nucleatum by local health status in the oral cavity defines its subspecies disease association.

The ubiquitous inflammophilic oral pathobiont Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) is widely recognized for its strong association with inflammatory dysbiotic diseases and cancer. Fn is subdivided into four subspecies, which are historically considered functionally interchangeable in the oral cavity. To test this assumption, we analyzed patient-matched dental plaque and odontogenic abscess clinical specimens and examined whether an inflammatory environment selects for/against particular Fn subspecies. Dental plaque harbored a greater diversity of fusobacteria, with Fn. polymorphum dominating, whereas

Perioral dermatitis, an important side-effect of corticosteroids.

Perioral dermatitis has been ascribed to the use of oral contraceptives, cosmetics, toothpastes of to an infection with Candida or Fusobacteria, etc. However, seborrheic diathesis, together with the use of potent topical steroids, appeared to be the main cause of the affection. This was confirmed with the help of a number observations in the clinic and by inference from data regarding the geographical spread of the potent steroids.

Microbiome signatures associated with clinical stages of gastric Cancer: whole metagenome shotgun sequencing study.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer is one of the global health concerns. A series of studies on the stomach have confirmed the role of the microbiome in shaping gastrointestinal diseases. Delineation of microbiome signatures to distinguish chronic gastritis from gastric cancer will provide a non-invasive preventative and treatment strategy. In this study, we performed whole metagenome shotgun sequencing of fecal samples to enhance the detection of rare bacterial species and increase genome sequence coverage. Additionally, we employed multiple bioinformatics approaches to investigate the potential targ

Microbial diversity in uterus of healthy and metritic postpartum Holstein dairy cows.

Clone library of bacterial 16S rRNA gene was constructed to evaluate the bacterial diversity and community structure of uterus samples obtained from three postpartum healthy cows and three metritic cows on days 10 and 40. Sequences were assigned to five major groups (Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Tenericutes) and to an uncultured group. On day 10, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Fusobacteria were the dominant group both in healthy and metritic cows. On day 40, the major sequences were affiliated with Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Tenericutes, and Proteobacteria. Tene

Characteristics of Microbiota in Different Segments of the Digestive Tract of Lycodon rufozonatus.

The gastrointestinal tract of animals contains microbiota, forming a complex microecosystem. Gut microbes and their metabolites can regulate the development of host innate and adaptive immune systems. Animal immune systems maintain intestinal symbiotic microbiota homeostasis. However, relatively few studies have been published on reptiles, particularly snakes, and even fewer studies on different parts of the digestive tracts of these animals. Herein, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to investigate the microbial community composition and adaptability in the stomach and small and large intestine

Fusobacterium spondylodiscitis: case report and literature review.

Fusobacteria are obligate anaerobic bacilli residing in the oral cavity, female genital tract, and intestine. These pathogens are typical components of head, neck, and abdominal abscesses due to contiguous spread from adjacent mucosal surfaces. They are unusual etiologies, however, of bone and joint infections, particularly outside the cranial region. We report an unusual case of hematogenous lumbar spondylodiscitis caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum of suspected odontogenic origin.

Impact of Acute HIV Infection and Early Antiretroviral Therapy on the Human Gut Microbiome.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal microbial dysbiosis is evident in chronic HIV-infected individuals and may underlie inflammation that persists even during antiretroviral therapy (ART). It remains unclear, however, how early after HIV infection gut dysbiosis emerges and how it is affected by early ART. METHODS: Fecal microbiota were studied by 16s rDNA sequencing in 52 Thai men who have sex with men (MSM), at diagnosis of acute HIV infection (AHI), Fiebig Stages 1-5 (F1-5), and after 6 months of ART initiation, and in 7 Thai MSM HIV-uninfected controls. Fusobacterial infections in children.

Fusobacteria are members of the oral and gastrointestinal flora and are important potential pathogens in children. They are increasingly recognized as a cause of infections in children. These include infections of the head and neck (Lemierre syndrome, acute and chronic mastoiditis, chronic otitis and sinusitis, tonsillitis, peritonsillar and retropharyngeal abscesses, postanginal cervical lymphadenitis, periodontitis), brain, lungs, abdomen, pelvis, bones, joints, and blood. This review describes the clinical spectrum of fusobacterial infection in children and their management.

Comparison of the bacterial composition and structure in symptomatic and asymptomatic endodontic infections associated with root-filled teeth using pyrosequencing.

Residual microorganisms and/or re-infections are a major cause for root canal therapy failure. Understanding of the bacterial content could improve treatment protocols. Fifty samples from 25 symptomatic and 25 asymptomatic previously root-filled teeth were collected from Sudanese patients with periradicular lesions. Amplified 16S rRNA gene (V1-V2) variable regions were subjected to pyrosequencing (FLX 454) to determine the bacterial profile. Obtained quality-controlled sequences from forty samples were classified into 741 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) at 3% dissimilarity, 525 at 5% dissim

Examining the complex Interplay between gut microbiota abundance and short-chain fatty acid production in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients shortly after onset of disease.

This study aimed to assess differences in the enteral microbiome of relatively recent-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients (< 6-15 months since symptom onset) compared to healthy individuals, focusing on short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) as potential mediators of host metabolism. We included 28 volunteers (16 ALS, 12 controls) with informed consent. No significant effect of ALS on alpha diversity (measuring the variety and abundance of species within a single sample, and indicating the health and complexity of the microbiome) was observed, but ALS patients had higher abundances of

Metagenomics Reveals Seasonal Functional Adaptation of the Gut Microbiome to Host Feeding and Fasting in the Chinese Alligator.

As a natural hibernator, the Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) is an ideal and intriguing model to investigate changes in microbial community structure and function caused by hibernation. In this study, we used 16S rRNA profiling and metagenomic analysis to compare the composition, diversity, and functional capacity in the gut microbiome of hibernating vs. active Chinese alligators. Our results show that gut microbial communities undergo seasonal restructuring in response to seasonal cycles of feeding and fasting in the Chinese alligator, but this animal harbors a core gut microbial commu
