[Bacterial meningitis as a complication of Fusobacterium necroforum infection in adults].

Fusobacterium necrophorum, an anaerobic, gram-negative rod, belongs to the physiological flora of the oropharynx. It causes Lemierre's syndrome characterized by oropharyngeal infection, septic thrombophlebitis of the neck, in particular of the internal jugular vein, and metastatic abscesses, predominantly in the lungs. Rarely, and mainly in children, it causes meningitis. Here we report the clinical course of a 25-year-old woman with F. necrophorum meningitis. She presented with incomplete, right third nerve palsy. Within a few days, she developed fever, meningism and progressive reduction of

Mixed fusobacterium and actinomyces pulmonary infection. Case report.

This is a report of a twelve-year-old black male who presents a history of left neck pain, left shoulder pain, weight loss and minimal fever. The admission diagnosis was a malignancy, supported by radiographic findings of consolidation of left lower and left upper lobes and periosteal new bone formation along the inferior aspects of the left second, third and fourth ribs. Open biopsy of the chest wall revealed a large abscess cavity. Subsequent cultures on anaerobic blood agar plates grew Actinomyces and Fusobacterium. The patient was treated with penicillin and improved clinically. This case

Infections Caused by Fusobacterium Species: Microbiology, Clinical Syndromes and Management: A Narrative Review.

Fusobacterium spp. are Gram-negative, obligate anaerobic bacteria associated with a broad clinical spectrum, including head and neck infections; soft tissue infections; gastrointestinal and genitourinary infections; and bacteremia without an identified source. Clinical manifestations vary by species and site of colonization. F. necrophorum is linked to head and neck infections that may culminate in Lemierre syndrome, a life-threatening septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. Although Fusobacterium bacteremia is uncommon, it is associated with substantial mortality. F. necrophorum

Invasive Fusobacterium necrophorum infections and Lemièrre's syndrome: the role of thrombophilia and EBV.

The purpose of this investigation was to describe the clinical spectrum of invasive Fusobacterium necrophorum infections and Lemièrre's syndrome, to examine the role of underlying thrombophilia and concomitant mononucleosis in Lemièrre's syndrome, and to describe thromboembolic complications. Patients with invasive F. necrophorum infections were identified either prospectively or retrospectively through the regional database of clinical microbiology from 2000 to 2015. Patient records were reviewed and blood samples from patients with Lemièrre's syndrome were collected for Epstein-Barr virus (E

Intersecting Pathologies: Vulvar Cancer Complicated by a Fusobacterium necrophorum Infection.

Vulvar cancer represents a small minority of annual cancer cases in America. This malignancy affects more than the physical health of the patient. This malignancy also has a negative impact on women's psychological and sexual health. This case pertains to a 49-year-old woman (G1P1001) who presented with right groin pain, fever, and chills for three days. She reported experiencing vaginal bleeding during the intercourse and had been able to palpate a mass inside her vagina for the past five years. A pelvic exam revealed a 6 cm tender mass on the left vaginal wall, which was friable and hemorrha

Rectal Cancer Presenting with Absceding Infection Due to Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Intestinal microbiota such as Fusobacterium nucleatum play an important role in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer. Here, we describe the case of a 47-year-old patient presenting with endophthalmitis and a liver abscess due to Fusobacterium nucleatum that prompted the diagnosis of colorectal cancer as the most likely source of infection. This case highlights that colorectal cancer needs to be considered in patients with systemic infection with Fusobacterium nucleatum and colonoscopy should be performed.

Fusobacterium necrophorum causing infective endocarditis and liver and splenic abscesses.

A 25-year-old male without prior co-morbidities was admitted to hospital with Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteremia, where he was found to have liver and splenic abscesses. Further evaluation with echocardiography revealed a bicuspid aortic valve with severe insufficiency and a 1.68 x 0.86 cm vegetation. The patient required abscess drainage, intravenous antimicrobial therapy and aortic valve replacement. Complete resolution of the infection was achieved after valve replacement and a prolonged course of intravenous antimicrobial therapy. A brief analysis of the patient's clinical course and rev

Low usefulness of reporting tonsillar PCR Ct-values in pharyngeal infections with Fusobacterium necrophorum.

Tonsillar Fusobacterium necrophorum PCR Ct-values were higher in participants with asymptomatic tonsillar carriage than patients with pharyngeal infections. However, Ct-values were not associated with severity of disease or predictive of development of complications and hence lacked clinical usefulness. The reporting of F. necrophorum Ct-values in clinical samples is not recommended.

Increased diagnosis of Lemierre syndrome and other Fusobacterium necrophorum infections at a Children's Hospital.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the apparent increase in the diagnosis of Lemierre syndrome (LS) and other Fusobacterium necrophorum infections at a large children's hospital. Infections with F necrophorum ranged from peritonsillar abscess to potentially fatal LS. LS is an oropharyngeal infection characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of head and neck veins, complicated by dissemination of septic emboli to pulmonary and systemic sites. METHODS: Review of the medical and laboratory records was conducted of all patients who were seen at or admitted to the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin with the diagno

Human infection with Fusobacterium necrophorum (Necrobacillosis), with a focus on Lemierre's syndrome.

Human infection with Fusobacterium necrophorum usually involves F. necrophorum subsp. funduliforme rather than F. necrophorum subsp. necrophorum, which is a common pathogen in animals. Lemierre's syndrome, or postanginal sepsis, is the most common life-threatening manifestation. Tonsillitis is followed by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and then a septicemia with septic emboli in lungs and other sites. Recent evidence suggests that F. necrophorum can be limited to the throat and cause persistent or recurrent tonsillitis. F. necrophorum is unique among non-spore-forming ana

Clindamycin-resistant Fusobacterium varium bacteremia and decubitus ulcer infection.

Bacteremia due to Fusobacterium spp. is unusual (<10% of cases of anaerobic bacteremia), and the isolation of Fusobacterium varium is especially uncommon. The most probable sources of Fusobacterium bacteremia are the respiratory, the gastrointestinal, and the genitourinary tracts. A.-M. Bourgault et al. (Clin. Infect. Dis. 25[Suppl. 2]:181-183) described 40 patients with Fusobacterium bacteremia; only 3 had Fusobacterium varium, and no one had decubitus scars as the portal of entry. In another published series (S. Henry, A. De Maria, and W. R. McCabe, Am. J. Med. 75:225-231, 1983) of 26 cases,

Further observations on enhancement of the infectivity of Fusobacterium necrophorum by other bacteria.

It had already been shown with a single virulent strain (A42) of Fusobacterium necrophorum that suspension of the fusobacteria in sub-lethal doses of broth cultures of other bacteria reduced the minimum infective dose (greater than 10(6) organisms) for mice by subcutaneous inoculation, sometimes to less than 10 organisms. The present study extended the known range of bacteria with strong infectivity-enhancing properties to include Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella oxytoca and Staphylococcus aureus; and those with weaker effect to include Bacillus subtilis, 'Bacteroides melaninogenicus', Clostridium

Similar recovery rates of Fusobacterium necrophorum from recurrently infected and non-infected tonsils.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies implicate the presence of Fusobacterium necrophorum (FN) in recurrent tonsillitis (RT), acute tonsillitis and peritonsillar abscess. The objective of the present study was to determine whether FN plays a role in RT by comparing bacteriologic results from patients suffering from RT, tonsillar hypertrophy and halitosis or persistent sore throat syndrome (PSTS). We analyzed both tonsils to determine the degree of concordance. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in 80 patients aged 8-30 years who were undergoing elective tonsillectomy. The patients

Pleural Empyema Caused by Streptococcus intermedius and Fusobacterium nucleatum: A Distinct Entity of Pleural Infections.

BACKGROUND: Many community-acquired pleural infections are caused by facultative and anaerobic bacteria from the human oral microbiota. The epidemiology, clinical characteristics, pathogenesis, and etiology of such infections are little studied. The aim of the present prospective multicenter cohort study was to provide a thorough microbiological and clinical characterization of such oral-type pleural infections and to improve our understanding of the underlying etiology and associated risk factors. METHODS: Over a 2-year period, we included 77 patients with community-acquired pleural infectio

Epidemiological characteristics of infections caused by Bacteroides, Prevotella and Fusobacterium species: a prospective observational study.

In order to investigate differences among infections due to Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria (Bacteroides, Prevotella and Fusobacterium spp.), clinical, epidemiological, and microbiological data were collected and evaluated from 206 anaerobic infections. The most frequently isolated species was Bacteroides fragilis. The majority of the cases were intra-abdominal infections (49%) followed by skin and soft tissue infections (24.7%). Logistic regression analysis showed that Bacteroides spp. strains were more often isolated from intra-abdominal infections (p = 0.002), whereas Prevotella spp. were

Fusobacterium nucleatum infection leading to rare hepatorenal abscess: a case report.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a gram-negative anaerobic bacterium commonly associated with periodontal disease. However, its role in extraoral infections, particularly in immunocompetent individuals, is increasingly recognized. We report a rare case of hepatorenal abscess caused by F. nucleatum in a previously healthy woman, initially suspected to have a malignant tumor based on PET-CT findings. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) of abscess aspirate confirmed the pathogen. The patient responded well to targeted antibiotic therapy. This case highlights the importance of considering anaerobic pathoge

Bilateral parapneumonic empyema caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum infection in a healthy individual.

Pulmonary infection caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, an obligate anaerobic gram-negative bacterium, most commonly occurs as a part of Lemierre's syndrome, i.e., pharyngotonsillitis complicated by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and secondary lung abscesses. A 51-year-old previously healthy man was admitted to our hospital with pleuritic right-sided chest pain. No sore throat, dysphagia, or neck pain was observed. Chest radiography and computed tomography (CT) revealed massive right pleural effusion and bilateral bronchopneumonia. Right thoracic drainage yielded purulen
