Breastfeeding is the optimal form of infant nutrition and remains a critical topic of discussion. In the case of lactation problems, women can be assisted by plant galactagogues designed to induce, sustain, and increase lactation. Reports on the popularity, awareness and knowledge of galactagogues are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the use of galactagogues in the diet among breastfeeding women. The online survey was conducted using anonymized questionnaires, with results collected in the Spring of 2021. Fifty-two women aged 20 to 50 who fed naturally participated in the study,

OBJECTIVES: Delayed or insufficient breast milk production, as well as low milk supply, is still a challenging problem to overcome, particularly in the case of preterm delivery. Herbal galactagogues might be a good way to increase milk supply, however, there is a lack of clinical studies confirming their efficacy and safety. The aim of this study was to verify the safety and effectiveness as a galactagogue of the unique galactagogue composition based on barley malt with β -glucan and lemon balm.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 117 mothers of preterm infants randomly divided into the

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding women are often concerned about their milk supply. To increase their milk supply, a galactagogue may be used. Galactagogues are foods, herbals, or medicines that increase milk production or flow. There is limited information on the effectiveness of galactagogues.
RESEARCH AIM: We aimed to evaluate the use and perceived effectiveness of prescribed and over-the-counter galactagogues in the Netherlands.
METHODS: We performed cross-sectional analyses among breastfeeding participants using a galactagogue in the cohort study the Dutch Pregnancy Drug Register. Their baseli

Galactagogues represent substances used to enhance breast milk production. Between 2001 and 2014 we identified 2034 phone calls regarding the use of galactagogues made to MotherSafe. The majority involved discussion of domperidone (n = 1884; 92.6%), with the remainder relating to metoclopramide (n = 153; 7.5%) or other herbal galactagogues (eg fenugreek, milk thistle; n = 262; 12.9%). A 50% decrease in total calls occurred from 2011 to 2014, while the percentage of calls regarding herbal galactagogues increased from 0% in 2001 to 23% in 2014. These findings support the need for more robust res

INTRODUCTION: Breastfeeding offers the optimal feeding option for newborns in terms of nutritional content and reinforces mother-infant bonding. As a physiological process intrinsically linked to parturition, breastfeeding is no longer reserved for puerperal mothers. Progress in understanding the intricacies of lactogenesis and breastfeeding has further paved the way for artificially induced lactation in recent years.
MAIN ISSUES: We describe the case of a mother through surrogacy with XY karyotype and complete androgen insensitivity syndrome who wished to breastfeed her child.

BACKGROUND: Galactogogues are often considered when mothers of very preterm infants experience challenges in producing adequate amounts of breast milk. We conducted a per-protocol analysis of those mothers who completed a 14-day course of domperidone during the EMPOWER trial. Our primary aim was to evaluate the response to a completed course of domperidone and whether the response was affected by the timing of the initiation of intervention.
METHODS: For this analysis, 83 mothers of infants ≤29 weeks gestation were included: 45 mothers who received domperidone from days 1 to 14 of the trial s

The authors describe three cases of severe accidental poisoning by plants used as part of a traditional treatment in Mayotte. The established, or suspected, toxicity of Thevetia peruviana (Yellow oleander), Cinchona pubescens (Red quinine-tree), Melia azaderach (Persian lilac, also called china berry) and Azadirachta indica (Neem), is discussed. The clinical presentation is cardiac (atrioventricular block) and well known for Thevetia and Cinchona intoxications. Neurological signs and multi-organ failure are found for Azadirachta and Melia. The identification of the plants is never easy, nor is

Postpartum hypogalactia is a common condition that may impair breastfeeding and maternal-infant health. This randomized controlled study evaluated the efficacy of a herbal galactagogic decoction combined with auricular acupressure in improving lactation outcomes. A total of 104 women with postpartum hypogalactia were enrolled between July 2023 and June 2025 and randomly assigned to a control group (auricular acupressure alone, n=52) or an intervention group (auricular acupressure plus herbal decoction, n=52) for 2 weeks. Primary outcomes included breast milk production and formula supplementat

Breast milk is the optimum for all infants, but hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care unit can cause separation of mothers and infants, which often interferes with milk secretion. Some reports show that domperidone is effective in promoting milk secretion. However, the Food and Drug Administration in the United States cautioned to not use domperidone for increasing milk volume because domperidone carries some risk of cardiac events, including QT prolongation, cardiac arrest, and sudden death. In contrast, it is used in Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom with safety. The pharmac

BACKGROUND: Inadequate milk production during the immediate postpartum period is a common problem. Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), a revered herb in Ayurveda, is traditionally used as a galactagogue. The objective of this study is to assess the safety and effectiveness of Shatavari root extract (SHT) on lactation in post-partum women.
METHODS: This prospective, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study enrolled post-partum women (≥37 weeks' gestation, aged 20-40 years) with uncomplicated vaginal or caesarean deliveries who intended to breastfeed. Participants received either Shatava

Diosgenin is a spiroketal steroidal natural product extracted from plants and used as the single most important precursor for the world steroid hormone industry. The sporadic occurrences of diosgenin in distantly related plants imply possible independent biosynthetic origins. The characteristic 5,6-spiroketal moiety in diosgenin is reminiscent of the spiroketal moiety present in anthelmintic avermectins isolated from actinomycete bacteria. How plants gained the ability to biosynthesize spiroketal natural products is unknown. Here, we report the diosgenin-biosynthetic pathways in himalayan pari

BACKGROUND: One of the most common complaints of nursing mothers in a few days after delivery is insufficient lactation. This is known to be partly due to the mothers' deficient knowledge of proper breastfeeding and often results in the beginning of bottlefeeding, which finally diminishes or ceases their breastfeeding. Considering the valuable effects of breastfeeding on nutritional, immunologic, and emotional aspects of infants' health, we planned this study to find out whether training of nursing mothers for breastfeeding can enhance their lactation; also, we tried to compare the effects of

BACKGROUND: Many women express concern about their ability to produce enough milk, and insufficient milk is frequently cited as the reason for supplementation and early termination of breastfeeding. When addressing this concern, it is important first to consider the influence of maternal and neonatal health, infant suck, proper latch, and feeding frequency on milk production, and that steps be taken to correct or compensate for any contributing issues. Oral galactagogues are substances that stimulate milk production. They may be pharmacological or non-pharmacological (natural). Natural galacta

Despite advances in knowledge about human lactation, clinicians face many problems when advising mothers who are experiencing breastfeeding difficulties that do not respond to normal management strategies. Primary insufficient milk production is now being acknowledged, but incidence rates have not been well studied. Many women have known histories of infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome, obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction, hyperandrogenism or other hormonal imbalances, while others have no obvious risk factors. Some present with obviously abnormal breasts that are

Background: Some breastfeeding mothers try to increase their milk supply through pharmaceutical, dietary, and behavioral strategies that vary in effectiveness. Information seeking behaviors may influence which strategies mothers use. Objective: To describe where mothers obtain information about increasing milk supply, describe the perceived influence of each information source on decision-making about strategies for increasing milk supply, and explore associations between information sources and mothers' use of galactagogues (i.e., pharmaceutical and dietary strategies) and behavioral strategi

The antipsychotic Sulpiride has been documented as an effective galactagogue that acts blocking dopamine receptors, increasing prolactin concentrations. However, this drug passes through the milk exposing neonates during postnatal development, which may result in functional and morphological alterations in adult life. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether maternal exposure to Sulpiride during lactation could impair reproductive development of female offspring. The dams were treated daily by gavage with Sulpiride doses of 2.5mg/Kg (SUL 2.5mg group) and 25mg/Kg (SUL 25mg gr

A healthy, term male infant was weaned at 10 days postpartum because of his mother's illness. The baby was breastfed by his mother's sister, but mostly he was fed with his aunt's expressed milk and with formula by bottle. At 9 weeks postpartum relactation began. Techniques used were a supplemental nursing support system device; frequent suckle at the breast, supplemented by formula given by bottle; breast pumping; domperidone; and support from an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and family. Problems that appeared during relactation were that at 12 postpartum weeks the baby re
