Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a fetal cardiovascular disease with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. In the present study, we elucidated the role of galectin-3 in preventing myocardial ischemic reperfusion injury. We found that galactin-3 was significantly up-regulated in the myocardium and cardiomyocyte subjected to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) and hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) treatment, respectively. Galectin-3 knockdown significantly decreased the ischemic size of the left ventricular and the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes. Moreover, galectin-3 knockdown reversed the decrease of mitoc

INTRODUCTION: Cysts and periapical granulomas are inflammatory reactions that develop in response to periapical infection by microbial species in dental root canal. It is known that toll-like receptors (TLRs) are pathogen recognition molecules and that galectins are lectins that can be associated with the inflammatory process, stimulating or inhibiting the immune system. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in situ expression of TLRs and galectins in radicular cysts and periapical granulomas.
METHODS: We analyzed 62 cases (30 radicular cysts, 27 periapical granulomas, and 5 control

Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has the potential to impair cardiac function and cause heart failure. We aimed to study the cardioprotective influence of Galactin-3 (Gal-3) inhibitor; modified citrus pectin (MCP) in isoprenaline induced myocardial infarction (MI) in T2DM rats. Forty rats were allocated into 4 groups; groups I and II served as control. T2DM was provoked in groups III and IV by serving them high fat diet followed by a single low dose of Streptozotocin (STZ), then group IV were administered MCP in drinking water for 6 weeks. Groups III and IV were then subcutaneously injected iso

COVID-19 is the global pandemic that affected our population in the past 2 years. Considerable research has been done to better understand the pathophysiology of this disease and to identify new therapeutic targets, especially for severe cases. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a receptor present at the surface of different cell types, namely epithelial and inflammatory cells, which has been described as a severity marker in COVID-19. The activation of Gal-3 through its binding protein (Gal-3BP) is directly linked to the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines that contribute for the cytokine storm (CS)

INTRODUCTION: Hirsutism is defined as excessive terminal hair in androgen-dependent areas in women. Adipose tissue is no longer regarded as a storage site for triglycerides or as a source of free fatty acids but is currently emerging as a key constituent of energy metabolism secreting numerous enzymes, cytokines, growth factors, and hormones.
AIM: To evaluate serum levels of galectin-3 (Gal3), lipocalin-2 (LCN2), retinol binding protein (RBP), and small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL) in patients with hirsutism and patients co-presenting with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hirsuti

Angiogenesis is heavily influenced by VEGF-A and its family of receptors, particularly VEGF receptor 2 (VEGF-R2). Like most cell surface proteins, VEGF-R2 is glycosylated, although the function of VEGF-R2 with respect to its glycosylation pattern is poorly characterized. Galectin-3, a glycan binding protein, interacts with the EGF and TGFβ receptors, retaining them on the plasma membrane and altering their signal transduction. Because VEGF-R2 is glycosylated and both galectin-3 and VEGF-R2 are involved with angiogenesis, we hypothesized that galectin-3 binds VEGF-R2 and modulates its signal tr

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) represents a heterogeneous clinical syndrome characterized by complex pathophysiological mechanisms and substantial diagnostic and prognostic challenges. Recently, circulating biomarkers have emerged as potential tools for improving risk stratification and disease characterization in this population. Among these biomarkers, soluble suppression of tumorigenicity-2 (sST2) and galectin-3 (Gal-3) have gained particular attention due to their association with myocardial fibrosis, inflammation, and adverse cardiac remodeling. This scoping review

We investigated whether there were associations between coronary artery disease (CAD) and soluble suppression of tumorigenicity (sST2) and galectin-3 levels at the time of coronary artery computed tomography angiography (CCTA) for CAD screening. The subjects consisted of 429 patients who underwent CCTA examination. CAD was diagnosed when there was 50% or more stenosis in the coronary artery. Patient backgrounds were collected and plasma levels of sST2 and galectin-3 were measured. The presence or absence of CAD and factors that contributed to CAD were analyzed for all patients and for those wi

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the most common cause of liver cirrhosis. Portal venous system thrombosis (PVST) is a major complication of liver cirrhosis. Recently, it has been shown that C-type lectin-like receptor 2 (CLEC-2) and galectin-1 participate in the activation and aggregation of platelets, thereby promoting the development of thrombosis. This cross-sectional study aims to evaluate the association of serum CLEC-2 and galectin-1 levels with PVST in patients with HBV-related liver cirrhosis.
METHODS: Overall, 65 patients with HBV-related liver cirrhosis wer

BACKGROUND: Autoinflammation with cytokine dysregulation may be implicated in the pathophysiology of adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD); however, the relationship between galectins and cytokines in patients with active AOSD remains unknown. We aimed to examine the relationship between circulating cytokines/chemokines and galectin-3 (Gal-3) or its ligand, Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer (M2BPGi), in Japanese patients with AOSD.
METHODS: We recruited 44 consecutive patients diagnosed with AOSD according to the Yamaguchi criteria, 50 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as disease

Nearly six million people worldwide have died from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Although COVID-19 vaccines are largely successful in reducing the severity of the disease and deaths, the decline in vaccine-induced immunity over time and the continuing emergence of new viral variants or mutations underscore the need for an alternative strategy for developing broad-spectrum host-mediated therapeutics against SARS-CoV-2. A key feature of severe COVID-19 is dysregulated innate immune signaling, culminat

Strategies targeting cross-talk between immunosuppressive renal dendritic cells (DCs) and T regulatory cells (Tregs) may be effective in treating cisplatin (CDDP)-induced acute kidney injury (AKI). Galectin 3 (Gal-3), expressed on renal DCs, is known as a crucial regulator of immune response in the kidneys. In this study, we investigated the role of Gal-3 for DCs-mediated expansion of Tregs in the attenuation of CDDP-induced AKI. Methods: AKI was induced in CDDP-treated wild type (WT) C57BL/6 and Gal-3 deficient (Gal-3-/-) mice. Biochemical, histological analysis, enzyme-linked immunosorbent a

Galectin-2 plays important roles in innate immunity, but its function in teleost fish remains poorly understood. In this study, we identified and characterized a galectin-2 from Mugil cephalus (McGal-2). The McGal-2 gene encodes a 135-amino acid protein containing a conserved carbohydrate-recognition domain with the HFNPR motif. McGal-2 was highly expressed in the gill and liver of healthy M. cephalus, and exhibited tissue-specific expression patterns upon LPS stimulation, with significant upregulation in the head kidney and liver but downregulation in the gill. Recombinant McGal-2 (rMcGal-2)

Intensive care units (ICUs) are expert hospital areas that provide treatment and 24 h care for people who are very sick. Sepsis represents a serious, severe condition and it can lead to septic shock and multiple organ dysfunction syndromes and is one of the most common reasons for patients' hospitalization in ICUs. We wanted to explore the prognostic values of interleukin (IL) 33, soluble suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (sST2), IL 27, and galectin 3 in critically-ill patients. We assumed that these parameters in combination or alone could predict mortality in ICU patients. This research repres

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Although several studies have reported elevated serum galectin-3 levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus, its association with type 2 diabetes mellitus, in Japan, where obesity is relatively uncommon, remains unclear. We investigated whether serum galectin-3 levels can be a predictive marker for type 2 diabetes mellitus in a Japanese general population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 433 participants who underwent a health check-up in Nagasaki between 2013 and 2014 were enrolled; of these, 307 participants completed follow-up by 2023. Participants were classified into quartil

BACKGROUND: Currently available risk scores fail to accurately predict morbidity and mortality in patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis who undergo transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). In this context, biomarkers like matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and Galectin-3 (Gal-3) may provide additional prognostic information.
METHODS: Patients with severe aortic stenosis undergoing consecutive, elective, transfemoral TAVI were included. Baseline demographic data, functional status, echocardiographic findings, clinical outcomes and biomarker levels were collected and analysed.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), rapidly evolved into a pandemic -the likes of which has not been experienced in 100 years. While novel vaccines show great efficacy, and therapeutics continue to be developed, the persistence of disease, with the concomitant threat of emergent variants, continues to impose massive health and socioeconomic issues worldwide. Studies show that in susceptible individuals, SARS-CoV-2 infection can rapidly progress toward lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), with ev

AIMS: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by β-amyloid (Aβ) aggregation and neuroinflammation, leading to progressive synaptic loss and cognitive decline. Recent evidence suggests that Galectin-3 (Gal-3) plays a critical role in Aβ pathogenesis. However, strategies to simultaneously target Gal-3 and Aβ are currently insufficient. This study evaluates the therapeutic efficacy of (E)-2-(3,4-dihydroxystyryl)-3-hydroxy-4H-pyran-4-one (D30), in reducing Gal-3 and Aβ pathogenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We applied exogenous oligomeric Aβ and used 5 × FAD mice to assess the impact of Aβ on Gal

AIMS: Soluble suppression of tumourigenicity 2 (sST2) and galectin-3 are involved in cardiac fibrosis, inflammation, and remodelling. However, the place of sST2 and galectin-3 in predicting the outcomes of electrical cardioversion of atrial fibrillation (AF) is uncertain. We evaluated whether these biomarkers could predict sinus rhythm (SR) maintenance after cardioversion of persistent AF in patients with normal left ventricular systolic function.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The study included 80 patients with persistent AF, who underwent cardioversion from February 2016 to August 2018. The blood co
