Physical Activity Modulating Lipid Metabolism in Gallbladder Diseases.

Physical activity encompasses a series of overall benefits on cardiovascular health and metabolic disorders. Research has recently focused on the hepatobiliary tract, as an additional target of the health-related outcomes of different types of physical exercise. Here, we focus on the global features of physical activity with respect to exercise modality and intensity, and on studies linking physical activity to lipid metabolism, gallbladder diseases (gallstones, symptoms, complications and health-related quality of life), gallbladder motor-function, enterohepatic circulation of bile acids, and

Needlescopic surgery for liver, gallbladder and spleen diseases.

BACKGROUND: We propose that needlescopic surgery (NS) should be considered as a way of improving the esthetic result and post-operative quality of life of patients and of reducing costs and stress on surgeons, and we have evaluated the results of NS. METHODS: We used NS in 157 patients between May 1998 and December 2010: cholecystectomy in 150 patients, marsupialization of splenic and hepatic cysts in 4 and splenectomy in 3, respectively. Under general anesthesia, one 12-mm and two or three 2- or 3-mm ports were introduced into the operative field. The specimen was retrieved from the 12-mm wo

[Ultrasonic diagnosis of benign diseases of the gallbladder].

The authors discuss experience in ultrasonic examination (USE) of the biliary tract in 1,068 patients with various benign diseases of the gallbladder; 536 of them were treated by surgery. It is shown that USE is a highly informative and authentic method in the diagnosis of benign diseases of the gallbladder. The article deals with the USE semeiotics of acute destructive cholecystitis, its complications, as well as chronic calculous cholecystitis and various benign acalculous diseases of the gallbladder. Among the existing methods of examination of the biliary tract, the authors claim USE to be

[Ultrasound diagnosis of gallbladder and bile duct diseases].

The paper is concerned with analysis of the potentialities of ultrasound introscopy in the diagnosis of various diseases of the gall bladder and biliferous ducts in 174 patients aged 19 to 76. The accuracy of the detection of calcium containing concrements of the gall bladder was 98.8%, that of choledocholithiasis--75%, noncalculous cholecystitis--88.4%, choledochodilatation--71.4%. In the absence of pathological changes in the gall bladder and biliferous ducts the reliability of echography was 27.7 and 93.1%, respectively. Causes of diagnostic errors in ultrasound tomography of the biliary sy

Gallbladder disease in children.

Biliary disease in children has changed over the past few decades, with a marked rise in incidence-perhaps most related to the parallel rise in pediatric obesity-as well as a rise in cholecystectomy rates. In addition to stone disease (cholelithiasis), acalculous causes of gallbladder pain such as biliary dyskinesia, also appear to be on the rise and present diagnostic and treatment conundrums to surgeons.

Intervention for gallbladder disease.

Intervention in the gallbladder includes therapy for both acute and chronic gallbladder disease. Although drainage for acute cholecystitis has been described by several investigators, the future seems to be in removal of calculi in symptomatic patients without acute cholecystitis. The technique for acute gallbladder drainage is described in detail using ultrasound guidance with or without fluoroscopy; for symptomatic gallstones, the clinical and technical aspects are described. We also discuss in detail the totally new concept for gallstone removal and the initial patient work using rotational

Gallbladder disease in childhood.

Seventy-seven children less than 19 years old underwent cholecystectomy during a 12-year period at UCLA Medical Center. Forty-four had calculous cholecystitis; five had acalculous cholecystitis; and 28 underwent cholecystectomy with other major biliary surgery. In more than half of the patients with calculous cholecystitis, a cause for cholelithiasis could be identified, most commonly total parental nutrition use. Those without an identifiable etiology were all females, were older, were generally obese, had a family history of gallbladder disease and had a higher likelihood of adult-life sympt

Gallbladder disease in pregnancy.

Cholecystosonography was performed on 338 obstetric patients, and the gallbladder was successfully visualized in 93% of them. Gallbladder volume increased with duration of pregnancy. Three and one-half percent of the patients had obvious cholelithiasis, and a total of 4.2% had abnormalities. These findings suggest that cholecystosonography should become part of the routine obstetric ultrasound examination.

Differentiating gallbladder cancer from benign gallbladder diseases using image-guided percutaneous gallbladder biopsy: A retrospective single-center study of 28 cases.

Differentiating gallbladder cancer (GBC) from benign inflammatory conditions such as xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis remains challenging because of overlapping imaging features. Misdiagnosis may lead to unnecessarily extensive resection in benign cases or inadequate oncological treatment in malignant cases. Preoperative histological confirmation can improve diagnostic accuracy and support appropriate surgical decision-making. We retrospectively analyzed 28 patients who underwent image-guided percutaneous transhepatic core needle biopsy for radiologically indeterminate GB lesions with hepatic

[Biochemical features of gallbladder bile in biliary tract diseases].

Sixty-two and 58 patients with hypo- and hypermotor biliary tract dysfunction (BTD), respectively, as well as 59 patients with chronic acalculous cholecystitis (CAC) and 63 with opisthorchiasis-complicated CAC were examined. A control group comprised 33 patients of the same sex and age. All the patients underwent fractional duodenal intubation, followed by clinical, biochemical, and serological bile studies. All the examinees were found to increased gallbladder bile lithogenicity, minor changes being observed in biliary tract dysfunction and more pronounced ones being in opisthorchiasis. A bio

[Radioclinical and morphological comparisons in non-lithiasic gallbladder diseases].

Confrontation of the clinical, radiologic and morphologic data in a lot of 274 patients operated for non-lithiasic cholecystopathies during the 1966-1972 period, led to the following conclusions: - the painful choleic syndrome whose duration and frequency increase progressively, refractory to the conservative treatment, is a basic criterion in establishing the surgical treatment; - any change in the radiologic image of the gallbladder, especially those evoking a partial or totally inefficient contractile effort are of diagnostic value, suggesting the necessity of the operation, when confirmed

Crohn's disease of the gallbladder.

Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory condition, which typically involves the small and large bowel but can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition. Complications of CD include gallstone formation and cholecystitis. Impaired reabsorption of bile salts in the small bowel and CD-related surgeries are key factors in the development of CD-related gallstones, although other factors are also important. Direct CD-related inflammation of the gallbladder is very unusual and the typical histological

Gallbladder disease in pregnancy.

Cholecystitis should be considered in the evaluation of any pregnant woman with abdominal complaints. Acute cholecystitis can mimic many other intra-abdominal problems, both obstetric and nonobstetric. Most patients respond to conservative management, with minimal increase in maternal or fetal morbidity and mortality. A few will not respond to therapy or will have severe complications requiring more aggressive management, including surgery.

Retrospective analysis of histo-pathological patterns in gallbladder diseases.

A total of 250 gall bladder samples throughout three years at SKMCH Muzaffarpur, India were used. Of all findings chronic cholecystitis proved to be most prevalent (76%) while acute cholecystitis occurred in 8% of cases and xantho-granulomato-uscholecystitis appeared in 4.8% of specimens. We show that 6% of lesions were hyperplastic and neoplastic changes including adenocarcinoma appeared in 5.2% of cases. Incidental gall bladder carcinoma in 1.2% of examined specimens. The study highlights the necessity of routine histopathological examination since it identifies clinically inconspicuous mali

Association of gallbladder diseases with risk of gastrointestinal polyps.

BACKGROUND: It has not yet been determined whether gastroscopy and colonoscopy screening help patients with gallbladder diseases. We aim to retrospectively investigate the relationship between gallbladder diseases and gastrointestinal polyps in order to provide a theoretical basis for the early screening of gastrointestinal polyps in patients with gallbladder disease. METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study involving 1662 patients who underwent gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and abdominal ultrasound as part of their health check-up from January 2015 to July 2020. We also compared th

Pathophysiological significance of gallbladder volume changes in gallstone diseases.

AIM: To study the pathophysiological significance of gallbladder volume (GBV) and ejection fraction changes in gallstone patients. METHODS: The fasting GBV of gallstone patients with acute cholecystitis (n = 99), chronic cholecystitis (n = 85) and non-gallstone disease (n = 240) were measured by preoperative computed tomography. Direct saline injection measurements of GBV after cholecystectomy were also performed. The fasting and postprandial GBV of 65 patients with gallstones and chronic cholecystitis and 53 healthy subjects who received health examinations were measured by abdominal ultraso
