Protozoan and Helminth Infections of Aviary-Reared Alectoris rufa (Galliformes: Phasianidae) before Releasing for Hunting in the Czech Republic: Infection Dynamics and Potential Risks.

Age-related dynamics of protozoan and helminth infections in the red-legged partridge, Alectoris rufa, were studied in an intensive breeding aviary in the Czech Republic before releasing birds for hunting purposes. Pooled fecal samples (n = 900) were examined over 3 rearing seasons (2012-2014). A total of 4 protozoan species, Cryptosporidium baileyi, Cryptosporidium meleagridis, Eimeria kofoidi, and Eimeria legionensis, and 4 helminths, Capillaria phasianina, Eucoleus perforans, Heterakis gallinarum, and Syngamus trachea, was found. The most common parasite was S. trachea (prevalence 20-26%) i

Candidiasis in Birds (Galliformes, Anseriformes, Psittaciformes, Passeriformes, and Columbiformes): A Focus on Antifungal Susceptibility Pattern of Candida albicans and Non-albicans Isolates in Avian Clinical Specimens.

Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by Candida species which has been reported in most domestic and wild birds and mammals. In this study, 196 samples from different species of birds with suspected symptoms of candidiasis were examined. Pharyngeal swabs, cloacal swabs, and fecal samples were taken from the birds. The samples were cultured in sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) containing cycloheximide and chloramphenicol and incubated at 42°C. Suspected isolates of Candida were identified using PCR. To detect the candida genus, a primer set to target the candida rDNA (ITS1-ITS4) was selected. T

Phylogenetic origins of early alterations in brain region proportions.

Adult galliform birds (e.g. chickens) exhibit a relatively small telencephalon and a proportionately large optic tectum compared with parrots and songbirds. We previously examined the embryonic origins of these adult species differences and found that the optic tectum is larger in quail than in parakeets and songbirds at early stages of development, prior to tectal neurogenesis onset. The aim of this study was to determine whether a proportionately large presumptive tectum is a primitive condition within birds or a derived feature of quail and other galliform birds. To this end, we examined em

Developmental basis of phallus reduction during bird evolution.

BACKGROUND: One of the most puzzling events in evolution is the reduction and loss of the phallus in birds. All birds reproduce by internal fertilization, but only ∼3% of birds have retained a phallus capable of intromission. A number of hypotheses have been proposed for the evolutionary mechanisms that drove phallus reduction; however, the underlying developmental mechanisms are unknown. RESULTS: We investigated genital development in two sister clades of birds, Galliformes (land fowl), most of which lack an intromittent phallus, and Anseriformes (waterfowl), which have well developed phallu

DETECTION OF SPLENDIDOFILARIA SP. (ONCHOCERCIDAE:SPLENDIDOFILARIINAE) MICROFILARIA WITHIN ALASKAN GROUND-DWELLING BIRDS IN THE GROUSE SUBFAMILY TETRAONINAE USING TAQMAN PROBE-BASED REAL-TIME PCR.

Grouse and ptarmigan (Galliformes) harbor fairly diverse helminth faunas that can impact the host's health, including filarial nematodes in the genus Splendidofilaria. As host and parasite distributions are predicted to shift in response to recent climate change, novel parasites may be introduced into a region and impose additional stressors on bird populations. Limited information is available on the prevalence of filariasis in Alaska galliforms. To date, no molecular surveys have been completed. Past studies relied on examining blood smears or total body necropsies, which are time-consuming

Vocal specialization through tracheal elongation in an extinct Miocene pheasant from China.

Modifications to the upper vocal tract involving hyper-elongated tracheae have evolved many times within crown birds, and their evolution has been linked to a 'size exaggeration' hypothesis in acoustic signaling and communication, whereby smaller-sized birds can produce louder sounds. A fossil skeleton of a new extinct species of wildfowl (Galliformes: Phasianidae) from the late Miocene of China, preserves an elongated, coiled trachea that represents the oldest fossil record of this vocal modification in birds and the first documentation of its evolution within pheasants. The phylogenetic posi

Allopsoroptoides galli n. g., n. sp., a new genus and species of feather mites (Acari: Analgoidea: Psoroptoididae) causing mange in commercially raised domestic chicken in Brazil.

A new feather mite, Allopsoroptoides galli n. g., n. sp. (Psoroptoididae: Pandalurinae), is described from the domestic chicken, Gallus gallus (Linnaeus) (Galliformes: Phasianidae), from Brazil. This is the first record of a representative of the feather mite family Psoroptoididae from an avian host of the order Galliformes. The new genus is closely related to the genus Cygnocoptes Fain & Bochkov, 2003 but clearly differs from the latter and all other genera of the family by the loss of four median pairs of hysteronotal setae (c1, d1, e1, and h1) in both sexes and by the unique shape of the ma

Greater prairie chickens have a compact MHC-B with a single class IA locus.

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) plays a central role in innate and adaptive immunity, but relatively little is known about the evolution of the number and arrangement of MHC genes in birds. Insights into the evolution of the MHC in birds can be gained by comparing the genetic architecture of the MHC between closely related species. We used a fosmid DNA library to sequence a 60.9-kb region of the MHC of the greater prairie chicken (Tympanuchus cupido), one of five species of Galliformes with a physically mapped MHC. Greater prairie chickens have the smallest core MHC yet observed in

Hepatitis and splenitis due to systemic tetratrichomoniasis in an American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos).

A free-ranging, young adult, female American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), found dead on the grounds of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Southern California, had severe multifocal to coalescing necrotizing hepatitis and splenitis on postmortem examination. Histologically, within the large areas of necrosis were myriad pleomorphic, 5-20 µm in diameter, protozoal organisms with 1 to multiple nuclei. Ultrastructurally, the organisms were consistent with a trichomonad flagellate. Polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene identified nucleotide seq

Disentangling the drivers and host-mediated global spread of H7 influenza A virus.

Avian influenza H7 viruses pose a significant zoonotic and pandemic threat, yet their evolutionary dynamics, spatial transmission patterns, and host-specific roles remain underexplored. This study integrates phylodynamic and phylogeographic analyses to map global H7 dissemination, quantify host-specific contributions, and identify key ecological and anthropogenic drivers. Epidemiological data show key epidemic waves in Asia during 2013-2014 and 2016-2017, and in Africa in 2023. The Eurasian and American lineages of H7 viruses exhibit transmission with a median velocity of ~661 km/year and ~354

A survey of Eocene stomach contents illuminates the origins of frugivory and seed dispersal in neornithine (crown group) birds.

Stomach contents with seeds in avian fossils from the latest early/earliest middle Eocene Messel oil shale (Germany) are surveyed. 20 bird specimens belonging to 10 species with seeds produced by at least 13 different plant species are reported. The fossils provide the earliest direct evidence for avian frugivory and suggest that seed dispersal by neornithine (crown group) birds occurred earlier and was more extensive than currently thought. For the first time, we report seeds in the stomach content of stem group Trogoniformes, which today are important seed dispersers in the New World tropics

[Distribution of lethal haemosporidoses pathogens in poultry].

Peculiarities of geographical distribution and distribution among hosts of the haemosporidian parasites, which cause lethal diseases in poultry, are specified. So far, 11 species of such parasites have been described. This represents about 5% of bird haemosporidian parasites. The haemosporidians cause the lethal epizooties in turkeys, chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons and domesticated ostriches. One species of parasites belongs to the family Haemoproteidae, six--to Plasmodiidae, and four--to Leucocytozoidae. The agents of lethal haemosporidioses have been recorded in domestic birds of the orders

Exploring Potential Intermediates in the Cross-Species Transmission of Influenza A Virus to Humans.

The influenza A virus (IAV) has been a major cause of several pandemics, underscoring the importance of elucidating its transmission dynamics. This review investigates potential intermediate hosts in the cross-species transmission of IAV to humans, focusing on the factors that facilitate zoonotic events. We evaluate the roles of various animal hosts, including pigs, galliformes, companion animals, minks, marine mammals, and other animals, in the spread of IAV to humans.

Pathology of Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection in two model avian hosts.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis causes severe neurological disorders in a wide range of warm-blooded animals, including several avian species. A laboratory isolate of A. cantonensis originating from French Polynesia, genotyped as clade 2, was used to assess the effect of experimental infection in chicken and Japanese quail. Low dose groups of birds were infected orally by 100 L3 larvae, high dose groups by 1500 L3 larvae and the birds in the third group were fed three infected snails, mimicking a natural infection. Clinical signs during the first week after infection, haematology, biochemistry, gr

Cellular and molecular insights on the regulation of innate immune responses to experimental aspergillosis in chicken and turkey poults.

Across the world, many commercial poultry flocks and captive birds are threatened by infection with Aspergillus fumigatus. Susceptibility to aspergillosis varies among birds; among galliform birds specifically, morbidity and mortality rates seem to be greater in turkeys than in chickens. Little is known regarding the features of avian immune responses after inhalation of Aspergillus conidia, and to date, scarce information on inflammatory responses during aspergillosis exists. Thus, in the present study, we aimed to improve our understanding of the interactions between A. fumigatus and economi

Partridge and embryonated partridge egg as new preclinical models for candidiasis.

Candida albicans (C. albicans) is the most common cause of candidiasis in humans and animals. This study was established to a new experimental infection model for systemic candidiasis using partridge and embryonated partridge egg. First, we tested the induction of systemic candidiasis in partridge and embryonated partridge egg. Finally, interaction between virulence factors of C. albicans and Bcl-2 family members was predicted. We observed that embryonic infection causes a decrease in survival time and at later embryonic days (11-12th), embryos showed lesions. Morphometric analysis of the extr
