BACKGROUND: Education plays a pivotal role in the care of oncological patients, reducing health costs, hospital readmission, and disease relapses. Education can be supportive in achieving multiple outcomes, improving symptom control and quality of life. A new approach is emerging in patient education: gamification. Gamification was defined as the "use of game elements in non-game contexts", including the application of games in serious contexts. The aim of this review is to explore the use of gamification in the oncology setting.
METHODS: A systematic scoping review was conducted in the MEDLI

Sleep hygiene encompasses the habits, behaviors, and environmental adjustments conducive to achieving a restful sleep at night. Practices such as maintaining a consistent bedtime routine, avoiding sleep-disruptive substances such as alcohol and caffeine, and ensuring a dark and quiet bedroom are examples of good sleep hygiene. There is growing evidence that well-designed serious games can facilitate desired healthy behavioral changes, suggesting their potential for sleep hygiene intervention. This paper presents a narrative review of existing serious games and gamified systems designed for sle

PURPOSE: Delivery of swallowing therapy is faced with challenges regarding access to in-clinic services and adherence to prescribed home programs. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies are being developed at a rapid pace to address these difficulties. Whereas some benefits to using these modern tools for therapy are obvious (e.g., electronic reminders), other advantages are not as well understood. One example is the potential for mHealth devices and apps to enhance adherence to treatment regimens.
METHOD: This article introduces a number of psychological concepts that relate to adherence and t

Changing socio-technical practices occurring within cycling are leading the pursuit, and its participants, to become ever more embedded into the networked digital world. GPS enabled mobile-technologies have introduced a new element of competition into recreational riding, whether on the road, competing over timed virtual segments, or online dissecting and comparing the data that has been logged and shared via dedicated ride-logging applications. In order to understand these technologies qualitative study using reflective diaries and semi-structured interviews has been conducted with experience

Algorithmic gamification has become an important tool for gig platforms to shape labour input; however, its relationship with the proactive service behaviour of gig workers remains unclear. Drawing on attribution theory, this study developed a dual-path model linking algorithmic gamification to gig workers' proactive service behaviour through commitment attribution and control attribution, with algorithmic procedural fairness as a boundary condition. The results indicate that algorithmic gamification is positively associated with proactive service behaviour through commitment attribution and n

INTRODUCTION: The complexity of modern healthcare has driven an increase in the complexity of the preregistration nursing curricula. Diverse learning needs in this population are best served by inclusion of diverse approaches to teaching. Gamification offers an approach to enhance motivation and engagement, allowing for sustained motivation to keep learning. However, current research concerning gamification within preregistration nursing is still limited, particularly surrounding underlying design and the impact this has on long-term engagement and motivation. The aim of this scoping review is

BACKGROUND: Cricothyrotomy is an invasive and rare emergency intervention to secure the airway in a "cannot intubate, cannot ventilate" situation. This leads to lack of routine. Cricothyrotomy is performed only hesitantly. Therefore, we aim to improve teaching by including a virtual reality (VR) cricothyrotomy as a learning tool.
METHODS: We programmed the VR cricothyrotomy in the C# programming language on the open-source Unity platform. We could include 149 students that we randomly assigned to either a study group (VR cricothyrotomy) or control group (educational video). We asked the study

BACKGROUND: Cognitive tasks are typically viewed as effortful, frustrating, and repetitive, which often leads to participant disengagement. This, in turn, may negatively impact data quality and/or reduce intervention effects. However, gamification may provide a possible solution. If game design features can be incorporated into cognitive tasks without undermining their scientific value, then data quality, intervention effects, and participant engagement may be improved.
OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aims to explore and evaluate the ways in which gamification has already been used for cog

Physical inactivity is a plague for public health, especially in Western Countries. Among the countermeasures, mobile applications promoting physical activity seem particularly promising, thanks to the spread and adoption of mobile devices. However, the dropout rates of users are high, thereby calling for strategies to increase retention rates. Moreover, user testing can be problematic, because it is typically conducted in a laboratory, leading to a limited ecological validity. In the present research, we developed a custom mobile app to promote physical activity. Three versions of the app wer

BACKGROUND: Games and gamified learning are increasingly used in healthcare education, including palliative care. However, the emotional complexity of palliative care may seem at odds with the fun-focused nature of games. While game-based learning has been studied in patient education, no systematic review has explored its use in training palliative care students and professionals. This review investigates the use of gamification and game-based learning in palliative care education for multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
METHOD: A systematic review was conducted across five databases.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer incidence is rising, as is the focus on efficient, evidence-based diagnostic training. However, proficiency in skin cancer diagnosis requires years of practice, and methods to accelerate learning are therefore necessary. Gamification-integration of game-like mechanics-is a promising method.
OBJECTIVES: Evaluating the effects of gamification-in the form of leaderboards showing participants' ranking-on training amount and skills acquisition in medical students, through directed, self-regulated, virtual training.
METHODS: In a nationwide randomized controlled trial, part
