Vagotomy effect on the content and synthesis of acetylcholine in autonomic ganglia in dog stomach.

The effect of total, selective and highly selective vagotomy was studied on the content and synthesis of acetylcholine in the tissues of the gastric fundus and pyloric part of the stomach in mongrel dogs of either sex aged 3 to 6 years. Total vagotomy produced after 3 weeks a non-significant rise in the amount and a highly significant increase of the synthesis of ACh in the fundus, and a significant increase in the amount and synthesis of ACh in the pyloric part. Six weeks after the procedure the Ch content of the fundus and pyloric part decreased statistically significantly, while the synthes

Osthole relieves diabetics cardiac autonomic neuropathy associated with P2X3 receptor in ratstellate ganglia.

Diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy (DCAN) is a serious complication of diabetes mellitus, which often leads to cardiac dysfunction and even threatens patients' life. Osthole, a natural coumarin derivative, has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and antihypertensive effects. The P2X3 receptor is related to DCAN. The objective of this study will investigate whether osthole relieves DCAN associated with the P2X3 receptor in the stellate ganglia of diabetic rats. A type 2 diabetes mellitus rat model was induced by a combination of diet and streptozotocin. Our results showed that osthole improved t

Expression of adenosine A2a receptor gene in rat dorsal root and autonomic ganglia.

The adenosine A2a receptors (A2aR) play an important role in the purinergic mediated neuromodulation. The presence of A2aR in the brain is well established. In contrast, little is known about their expression in the periphery. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of A2aR gene in the autonomic (otic, sphenopalatine, ciliary, cervical superior ganglia and carotid body) and in the dorsal root ganglia of normal rat. Hybridization histochemistry with S35-labelled radioactive oligonucleotide probes was used. An expression of A2aR gene was found in the large neuronal cells of t

Emx1-Cre Is Expressed in Peripheral Autonomic Ganglia That Regulate Central Cardiorespiratory Functions.

The Emx1-IRES-Cre transgenic mouse is commonly used to direct genetic recombination in forebrain excitatory neurons. However, the original study reported that Emx1-Cre is also expressed embryonically in peripheral autonomic ganglia, which could potentially affect the interpretation of targeted circuitry contributing to systemic phenotypes. Here, we report that Emx1-Cre is expressed in the afferent vagus nerve system involved in autonomic cardiorespiratory regulatory pathways. Our imaging studies revealed expression of Emx1-Cre driven tdtomato fluorescence in the afferent vagus nerve innervatin

Calcium channels controlling acetylcholine release from preganglionic nerve terminals in rat autonomic ganglia.

Little is known about the nature of the calcium channels controlling neurotransmitter release from preganglionic parasympathetic nerve fibres. In the present study, the effects of selective calcium channel antagonists and amiloride were investigated on ganglionic neurotransmission. Conventional intracellular recording and focal extracellular recording techniques were used in rat submandibular and pelvic ganglia, respectively. Excitatory postsynaptic potentials and excitatory postsynaptic currents preceded by nerve terminal impulses were recorded as a measure of acetylcholine release from paras

Reconsideration of the autonomic cranial ganglia: an immunohistochemical study of mid-term human fetuses.

The cranial parasympathetic ganglia have been reported to paradoxically contain the sympathetic nerve marker, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), in addition to neurons expressing parasympathetic markers such as vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). However, the distribution of these molecules in the cranial ganglia of human fetuses has not yet been examined. Using paraffin sections from 10 mid-term human fetuses (12-15 weeks), we performed immunohistochemistry for TH, VIP, and nNOS in the parasympathetic ciliary, pterygopalatine, otic, and submandibular ganglia

Nitric oxide synthase in the autonomic and sensory ganglia innervating the submandibular salivary gland.

This article reviews the neuroanatomical studies on the distribution of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in neurons and nerve fibers innervating the submandibular gland. Specificity of NADPH-diaphorase activity as a histochemical marker of neuronal NOS is discussed in light of corresponding NOS immunoreactivity. Anatomical data suggest that nitric oxide may affect neural regulation of the submandibular gland through both sympathetic, parasympathetic and sensory divisions of the autonomic nervous system. NOS-containing nerve terminals in the gland parenchyme are mainly vascular and either parasympat

Focal circumvention of blood-brain barrier with grafts of muscle, skin and autonomic ganglia.

The efficacy with which circulating horseradish peroxidase (HRP) spreads from transplants into the brain's interstitial spaces (IS), was assessed by 3 factors: graft type, site and age. Pieces of skeletal muscle, skin or entire superior cervical ganglion (SCG) were inserted into the IV ventricle (ventricular) or substance of the brain (parenchymal). The age of the grafts, i.e. the intervals after transplantation, were 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Generally, HRP spread into the IS to about the same extent from ventricular muscle and skin autografts--1 mm, but less from parenchymal SCG allografts--0.5

Knockdown the P2X3 receptor in the stellate ganglia of rats relieved the diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy.

Diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy (DCAN) is a common and serious complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), is manifested by nerve fiber injury in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve of the autonomic nervous system, and causes hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, silent myocardial infarction, and sudden death. Our previous study observed that P2X3 receptor in superior cervical ganglia in rat was associated with sympathetic neuropathy caused by myocardial ischemia. However, whether the P2X3 receptor is involved in the diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy and the underlying mechanisms rema

[A method for treating acute serous lymphadenitis by the action of novocaine block of the cervical autonomic ganglia].

Thirty-five patients with acute inflammations of the soft tissues were treated with procain blockages of the cervical sympathetic ganglia. This treatment modality has helped cut down the patients' hospitalization period by 3-4 days and did not involve therapy with other drugs, this being an important factor for patients with antibacterial drug allergies, contributing to improvement of the efficacy of the suggested method.

Degenerative and inflammatory lesions in sympathetic ganglia: further morphological evidence for an autonomic neuropathy in AIDS.

There is accumulating evidence that autonomic dysfunction occurs in HIV infection. While many studies have demonstrated autonomic abnormalities on clinical basis, only one has studied the morphology of sympathetic ganglia. The superior sympathetic ganglia of 12 randomly selected AIDS patients and those of 6 controls were examined morphologically in order to determine the frequency and severity of their involvement. Although they had not been investigated for autonomic dysfunction, 5 had suffered from non-infectious diarrhoea, one showed bilateral ptosis and another had non-specified visual pro

Resident Macrophages in the Cervical Sympathetic Ganglia Participate in P2Y12 Receptor Mediated Diabetic Cardiac Autonomic Neuropathy.

Diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy (DCAN) represents a significant and prevalent complication of diabetes. Further research is required to ascertain the role of the P2Y12 receptor, which is expressed on macrophages and satellite glial cells (SGCs), in the pathophysiology of DCAN. The objective of this study was to ascertain whether resident macrophages in the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) are involved in the pathological changes associated with DCAN, which are mediated by the P2Y12 receptor in satellite glial cells (SGCs). The findings showed that DCAN rats had higher sympathetic nerve d

Expression of the short chain fatty acid receptor GPR41/FFAR3 in autonomic and somatic sensory ganglia.

G-protein-coupled receptor 41 (GPR41) also called free fatty acid receptor 3 (FFAR3) is a Gαi-coupled receptor activated by short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) mainly produced from dietary complex carbohydrate fibers in the large intestine as products of fermentation by microbiota. FFAR3 is expressed in enteroendocrine cells, but has recently also been shown to be present in sympathetic neurons of the superior cervical ganglion. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the FFAR3 is present in other autonomic and sensory ganglia possibly influencing gut physiology. Cryostat sections were cu

Differential accumulation of herpes simplex virus type 1 latency-associated transcripts in sensory and autonomic ganglia.

We have analyzed the capacity of sensory and autonomic ganglia to demonstrate latency-associated transcripts (LATs) following inoculation of the anterior chamber of the mouse eye with Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). In autonomic ganglia, the number of LAT-containing neurons decreased 50-fold or more from the acute to the latent phase, while in the trigeminal ganglion, the decrease was less than 2-fold. The decrease in autonomic ganglia could not be related to destruction of neurons expressing LATs, since these ganglia harbored substantial amounts of viral DNA. The data demonstrate that du

Abnormally increased iron concentration in basal ganglia in Shy-Drager syndrome. MR imaging and autonomic study.

Report of an early case of Shy-Drager syndrome in a 67 year-old woman patient. Autonomic failure was diagnosed by functional evaluation as well as laboratory tests. MR imaging disclosed a prominent putamina hypodensity in T2-weighted images at high field strength due to iron increased depositing in this basal ganglia. MR imaging evidences confirm Shy-Drager syndrome diagnosis, and contributes for differential diagnosis of idiopathic hypotension (pure autonomic failure) in special in SDS early cases.

Distribution of substance P immunoreactive cell bodies and fibers in cranial sensory and autonomic ganglia of the chick.

Substance P-immunoreactive neurons were demonstrated in chick embryonic and adult trigeminal ganglion and jugular-superior ganglionic complex using FITC-immunohistochemical methods. Both small-size and large ganglion cells exhibited SP immunoreactivity, without apparent changes during embryonic and post-hatching development. SP-positive fibers could be detected in a good number in the sympathetic cranial cervical ganglion, either during embryonic development or in adult chick. No immunoreactive perikarya were observed in this ganglion. In the ciliary ganglion, both choroidal and ciliary neuron
