Ganglioglioma is a rare neoplasm most common in children and adolescents. It is typically located in the supratentorial compartment, with the temporal lobe being the most common tumor location. Anaplastic ganglioglioma is a WHO grade III ganglioglioma, a rare subtype accounting for a small minority of ganglioglioma cases. Posterior fossa anaplastic ganglioglioma in an adult is incredibly rare; only 3 prior cases have been reported. Only 1 adult anaplastic ganglioglioma in the cerebellum has been reported. We present the second reported adult cerebellar anaplastic ganglioglioma.

Congenital tumors account for 2% to 4% of all pediatric central nervous system tumors. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) represents a small subset of these tumors. Despite harboring histologic features similar to older patients, infants with GBM exhibit improved survival and respond more favorably to surgery and chemotherapy. To highlight this tumor's unique behavior, we report the case of a survivor of infantile GBM who developed a recurrent tumor in the surgical bed 6 months after diagnosis. The tumor was ultimately resected and was a ganglioglioma. This case shows both a favorable clinical outc

AIM: Prevalence and predictors of epileptic seizures are unknown in the malignant variant of ganglioglioma.
METHODS: In a retrospective exploratory dataset of 18 supratentorial anaplastic World Health Organization grade III gangliogliomas, we studied: (i) the prevalence and predictors of epileptic seizures at diagnosis; (ii) the evolution of seizures during tumor evolution; (iii) seizure control rates and predictors of epilepsy control after oncological treatments.
RESULTS: Epileptic seizures prevalence progresses throughout the natural course of anaplastic gangliogliomas: 44% at imaging dis

Gangliogliomas of the conus medullaris are very rare, with only 12 patients reported so far. We report a 6-year-old male who presented with a painless numbness of the left lower limb and with bladder dysfunction. MRI revealed an intramedullary lesion at the T11-T12 vertebral levels. The tumour was subtotally removed. Histopathological examination demonstrated ganglioglioma.

Ganglioglioma (GG) is an uncommon primary lesion of the central nervous system that is typically located supratentorially. There are only a few reports of GG arising from the cerebellum. To the best of our knowledge this is the first case of a cerebellar GG with supratentorial extension and a longstanding history before its recognition. In fact, this 29-year-old male presented with an 11-year history of intermittent headaches. A cranial computerized tomography (CT) performed at the onset of his complaints failed to reveal the tumor. After a particularly longstanding cephalalgic episode, the pa

We report a case of multiple gangliogliomas of the optic pathway in an 18-year-old boy. He presented with visual disturbance mainly in his left eye, non-specific headaches, and episodes of sensory disturbance in his left arm. Visual acuity was 6/9 and 6/24 in his right and left eye respectively. He did not have any Lisch nodules. Optic atrophy was noted in his left eye. MRI scan revealed multiple enhancing lesions involving the optic chiasm, left optic tract, right lateral geniculate body, and right optic radiation in the temporal lobe. Stereotactic biopsy of the temporal tumour confirmed gang

Gangliogliomas are rare tumors of the Central Nervous System. Five gangliogliomas were diagnosed out of 1560 brain tumours surgically resected out in a period of 5 years accounting for 0. 32%. We have tried to discuss in detail the pathological features of these tumours and have mentioned the clinical and radiological features associated with them. All the slides, tissue blocks and pathology reports of the surgical specimens of gangliglioma were reviewed and the clinical and radiological data reviewed. The ages of the patients ranged from 7-65 years with 4 males and 1 female. The tumors were l

A patient with a ganglioglioma of the neurohypophysis developed the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). We present the case and describe its microscopic and ultrastructural features. Malignant neoplasms were thought to be the main cause of ectopic production of vasopressin. Head trauma, infection, or drugs, however, can also induce hypersecretion of vasopressin. Mechanical compression of the pituitary stalk can lead to an excessive antidiuretic hormone (ADH) release by affecting the inhibitory system. Primary neuroendocrine tumors of the hypothalamic-neurohypophys

We report three patients with gangliogliomas involving the optic chiasm via distinct mechanisms. The ganglioglioma in one patient likely originated in the temporal lobe and spread medially to involve the chiasm, and diffuse spinal cord dissemination also occurred. Chiasmal involvement in this manner and dissemination at presentation are unusual for gangliogliomas. The tumor in a second patient was intrinsic to the hypothalmus and chiasm, while in the third patient, it involved both optic tracts, and a cyst compressed the chiasm laterally. Two patients developed severe bilateral visual loss, wh

We have been experienced a rare case of large supratentorial neuroepithelial tumor with a subdural cyst originated from the left fronto-parietal lobe in a 14-month-old boy. The tumor was characterized by its voluminous size, a leptomeningeal growth pattern with intense desmoplasia and divergent astrocytic and ganglionic differentiation. Schwann cell differentiation and melanocytes were also minutely demonstrated. These histological findings are characteristic of desmoplastic infantile gangliogliomas, reported by VandenBerg et al in 1987. And this tumor tissue architecture strongly suggests the

We present 11 patients with intracranial gangliogliomas. The age ranged between 4 and 69 years with a mean of 32 years. The most frequent clinical manifestations were epilepsy in 7 cases and headache in 4 cases, and had begun from 15 days to 12 years before diagnosis. The gangliogliomas were located supratentorially predominantly in the temporal lobe (5 cases), except one, which was located within the cerebellum, which is extremely rare. EEG evidenced focality in 8 cases. The CT scan showed hypo or isodense images which were often associated with cysts, and that partially or totally enhanced w

A melanotic ganglioglioma was biopsied in the pineal region of a 12-month-old girl who preoperatively underwent a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt for hydrocephalus and postoperatively received radiotherapy. The tumor was subtotally excised when the girl was 7 years and 4 months of age. Histologically, it demonstrated mature neurons in disorganized clusters and in well-differentiated cerebrum-like tissue, rare binucleated neurons, glia similar to normal gray matter, and bands of fibrous tissue containing heavily pigmented cells. Ultrastructurally, melanosomes of stages I to IV were identified in th

We have reviewed our experience with gangliogliomas treated in the post-computed tomography (CT) era at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Of 234 newly histologically verified neoplasms seen at our institution since 1975, 10 (4.3%) were gangliogliomas of the cerebral hemispheres. The presenting complaint was seizures in 9 of 10 patients, and in 8 the seizures were poorly controlled despite increasing doses of anticonvulsant medication. At the time of diagnosis, only 2 patients had a focal neurological deficit and none had signs or symptoms of increased intracranial pressure. Learning dis

We report a case of an infratentorial ganglioglioma in a 56-year-old male, who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during the diagnostic workup for a suspected lung cancer. The MRI scan revealed a space-occupying lesion of the left lobulus semilunaris superior cerebelli, which was assumed being a metastasis. The asymptomatic lesion was resected to establish the diagnosis. Histologic and immunohistochemical studies showed a ganglioglioma with World Health Organization grade I characteristics. Although ganglioglioma typically exhibits a supratentorial predilection, it should be included i

Desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma is a very rare supratentorial tumor occurring in the first two years of life. A five-month-old female infant presented with recurrent seizures, large head and loss of acquired milestones. Computerized Tomographic Scan of brain showed a large subarachnoid cyst with a solid intensely contrast enhancing tumor in the right temporoparietal region with severe degree of mass effect. Craniotomy and total excision of the tumor followed subsequently by subduro-peritoneal shunt for the extracerebral fluid collection was done. The child made good recovery. Histopatholo

We report a case of a 15-year-old girl with new onset seizures, who had a mixed dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) and ganglioglioma of the right parieto-occipital lobe. The tumor appeared well demarcated and exhibited a low T1 and a high T2 signal on magnetic resonance imaging. Architecturally it was in large part intracortical and multinodular, but also featured a leptomeningeal component. The former corresponded to DNT, a proliferation of oligodendroglia-like cells (OLCs) arranged in nodules, as well as comprising a diffuse internodular element featuring "floating neurons" in a mu

A 24-year-old gentleman presented to us with complaints of occasional headache for 2 years. Magnetic resonance imaging showed enhancing supra sellar mass with nonenhancing cystic components, extending superiorly up to the body of bilateral lateral ventricle, laterally displacing septum pellucidum, and compressing the third ventricle with obstructive hydrocephalus. Hormone profile depicted adrenocorticotropic hormone <5.00 pg/mL, growth hormone 1.32 ng/mL, insulin-like growth factor-1 <3.0 ng/mL. The patient underwent surgical resection. Histological finding was suggestive of ganglioglioma Worl

Intraventricular gangliogliomas presenting with spontaneous hemorrhage are rare. Due to high density of important tracts lateral to the ventricular atrium, the intraparietal trans sulcal approach is a good option to remove lesions in this location. These tracts are displaced and sometimes destroyed by the presence of large masses. A 33-year-old male presented with a sudden headache and a generalized seizure. He had a left visual field hemianopia and left visual field neglect. Brain computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a hemorrhagic tumor located in his right atrium. With

The following review of the literature describes the ganglioglioma, an uncommon mixed glioneuronal neoplasm, most often of low-grade histology, with a small, albeit well-documented, malignant potential. These tumors exhibit a strong epileptogenic propensity and most often present as new onset seizures or are discovered after a long history of refractory epilepsy. Despite their indolent course, the importance of gross total resection is well recognized to prevent anaplastic and malignant degeneration. Morphologically, the neoplasm is often cystic with an enhancing mural nodule, but can also be

We report the case of a 26-year-old male who was operated on after an acute episode complicating a long history of seizures. The resected temporal lesion was an anaplastic ganglioglioma. Ganglioglioma is a tumor of children and young adults, characterized by two cell components, neuronal and glial. It is usually a benign lesion. The present case is remarkable in several aspects. Hemorrhage led to the discovery of a supra-tentorial tumour. Microscopic examination revealed anaplastic foci in an otherwise typical lesion. There was a long past medical history but outcome was rapidly unfavorable af
