Lumbar Intradural Ganglion Cyst.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar intraspinal ganglion cysts are a rare cause of lumbar radiculopathy. These cysts are often extradural and next to facet joints. Sometimes they are related to ligamentum flavum or posterior longitudinal ligament. To our knowledge, lumbar intradural ganglion cyst has not been reported to date. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a fifth lumbar intradural ganglion cyst in an elderly patient presenting with insidious onset of left-sided lower limb pain. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine revealed a left-sided ventrolateral intraspinal cystic lesion abutting on the

Ganglion cyst of the temporomandibular joint.

INTRODUCTION: Ganglion cyst of the temporomandibular joint is a rare disease, which may arise from myxoid degeneration of the collagenous tissue of the temporomandibular joint capsule, without epithelial or endothelial lining. We report a case of cystic lesion in a 40-year-old female patient. OBSERVATION: The patient had a left pre-auricular oval-shaped swelling without any articular symptoms. The pathological analysis after surgical removal allowed diagnosing the lesion as a ganglion cyst of the left temporomandibular joint. DISCUSSION: We made a literature review and noted that this condit

Ganglion cyst of the temporomandibular joint.

Ganglion cysts are benign soft tissue tumours occurring in or near joints such as the wrist, foot or knee. They are rarely encountered in the region of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The authors report a ganglion cyst of the TMJ in a 56-year-old woman. The patient experienced pain and presented with a prominence in the right TMJ region, anterior to the tragus. She had some divergence in skin sensation in the right mental region of mandible. Magnetic-resonance imaging showed a rounded hypodense mass of soft tissue lateral to the right TMJ region. The surgical excision of the tumour was perf

Ganglion cyst of the temporomandibular joint.

We describe a case of a ganglion cyst of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and review the literature of this rare entity. Because of the rarity of such cysts in the TMJ, an accurate diagnosis is not usually made preoperatively. Treatment is surgical but, if a diagnosis can be made, a period of conservative management is justified.

Intraspinal extradural ganglion cyst.

Occurrence of ganglion cysts in the spine is extremely rare. Common symptoms include intermittent lumbar pain and pain at night. Neurological examination to distinguish from other etiologies of radicular pain may be difficult. The L4-L5 level is the most common sight of occurrence. Radiographically, degenerative changes, particularly spondylolisthesis, are a common finding. MRI appearance of the cysts is variable, according to the composition of the cyst. A ganglion cyst should be considered in the differential of radicular pain in the presence of degenerative changes of the lumbar spine.

Incidence of Surgery for Pediatric Wrist Ganglion Cysts.

BACKGROUND: While diagnosis of ganglion cysts of the wrist in the pediatric population is common, data on management are limited. This study describes a nationwide analysis of the incidence and treatment of pediatric ganglion cysts. METHODS: Patients who were diagnosed with a wrist ganglion cyst were identified from the PearlDiver database. Exclusion criteria included age over 18 years, incidence of different cyst diagnosis codes, fewer than 6 months of records prior to first diagnosis, and fewer than 2 years of follow-up. The use of imaging and common treatments for ganglion cysts including

Midline synovial and ganglion cysts causing neurogenic claudication.

Typically situated posterolateral in the spinal canal, intraspinal facet cysts often cause radicular symptoms. Rarely, the midline location of these synovial or ganglion cysts may cause thecal sac compression leading to neurogenic claudication or cauda equina syndrome. This article summarizes the clinical presentation, radiographic appearance, and management of three intraspinal, midline facet cysts. Three patients with symptomatic midline intraspinal facet cysts were retrospectively reviewed. Documented clinical visits, operative notes, histopathology reports, and imaging findings were invest

Extreme subparaneurial ganglion cysts. Part 1: Principles and implications.

OBJECTIVE: The formation and propagation of intraneural ganglion cysts (INGCs) is being elucidated by the unified articular theory. Its principles include a connection for joint fluid to egress from a synovial joint via an articular branch to a parent nerve and cyst following the path of least resistance, dependent on pressures and pressure fluxes. The occurrence of so-called extreme peroneal or tibial INGCs in the popliteal fossa extending to the sciatic nerve has been reported. One rarely described variant with a circumferential cyst within the subparaneurial compartment outside the epineuri

Persistent Symptoms of Ganglion Cysts in the Dorsal Foot.

BACKGROUND: A ganglion is a common benign cystic lesion, containing gelatinous material. Ganglia are most commonly asymptomatic, except for a lump, but symptoms depend on the location. A dorsal foot ganglion is typically painful. On the dorsal foot, the dorsalis pedis artery and the medial branch of the deep peroneal nerve are located under the fascia. OBJECTIVE: Five female patients of average age 45.8 ± 20 years (range, 12 to 60 years) with a painful ganglion in the dorsal foot were analyzed. RESULTS: Average lesion size was 2.94 ± 1.1 cm (range, 1.5 to 4.0 cm) and patients had experienced

Spectrum of MRI features of ganglion and synovial cysts.

Ganglion and synovial cysts occur mainly, but not necessarily, in association with osteoarthritis. Presentation varies widely, ranging from small, incidentally detected, asymptomatic lesions to giant ones that might be the source of symptoms, either due to their compressive effect on adjacent structures or due to complications, such as rupture. On magnetic resonance imaging they are typically presented as smooth, well-circumscribed, thin-walled, unilocular, and homogeneously T2-hyperintense lesions. An identifiable thin stalk communicating to the joint space is not infrequent. Nevertheless, de

Ultrasound-Guided Therapy for Knee and Foot Ganglion Cysts.

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided aspiration/injection of ganglion cysts in the lower extremities (knee and foot) that required referral to the radiology department for precise localization. The present study is the first series to describe such results. The study population consisted of 15 patients who had undergone treatment from April 2012 to January 2015. Follow-up was by telephone survey, which was performed at a mean of 15 ± 6 months after treatment. Almost 90% of patients experienced immediate improvement in symptoms (mostly pain), and 77% of these patie

Meniscal and ganglion cysts of the knee: MR evaluation.

Meniscal and ganglion cysts frequently present as palpable masses of the knee but occur at different locations than do popliteal cysts. Meniscal cysts also may be discovered incidentally on studies performed for suspected internal derangement. Sixteen cystic lesions of the knee were evaluated with MR, including 11 meniscal cysts and five ganglion cysts. Scans were performed at 1.5 T by using a transmit/receive extremity coil or a receive-only surface coil. Standard spin-echo imaging, including at least one long-TR/asymmetric-TE sequence, was performed in all cases. In six patients, gradient-ec

Sciatica and claudication caused by ganglion cyst.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case that a ganglion cyst compressed the sciatic nerve and caused sciatica and claudication in a 51-year-old male. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Sciatica and claudication commonly occurs in spinal stenosis. To our knowledge, only 4 cases have been reported on sciatica resulting from posterior ganglion cyst of hip. METHODS: A 51-year-old male had a 2-month history of radiating pain on his right leg. He could only walk 20 to 30 m before stopping and standing to rest for 1 to 3 minutes. Interestingly, he was able to walk longer distances (ab

Ganglion cyst of the posterior cruciate ligament.

A ganglion is a fluid cyst with a myxoid matrix that arises close to the tendons and joints. Its occurrence inside a joint is rare. Among the various pathological conditions producing impairment of the knee function, ganglia of the cruciate ligaments are quite rare. It may be painful or asymptomatic. Some patients may have a trauma history. Ganglia may mimic intra-articular lesions like tears of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or meniscus. Ganglia, though commonly arise from the ACL, can also arise from other structures such as the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) or meniscus. Ganglia ar
