The vaginal microbiome has been linked to negative health outcomes including preterm birth. Specific taxa, including Gardnerella spp., have been identified as risk factors for these conditions. Historically, microbiome analysis methods have treated all Gardnerella spp. as one species, but the broad diversity of Gardnerella has become more apparent. We explore the diversity of Gardnerella clades and genomic species in the vaginal microbiome of pregnant women and their associations with microbiome composition and preterm birth. Relative abundance of Gardnerella clades and genomic species and oth

Gardnerella vaginalis (GV) is a facultatively anaerobic gram-variable bacillus and is the major organism involved in bacterial vaginosis. GV-associated bacterial vaginosis has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes include preterm parturition and subclinical chorioamnionitis. Inflammatory response induced by GV presents paediatric problems as well. Studies had shown that increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines include TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 following fetal inflammatory response syndrome secondary to GV-induced intrauterine infection may result in the development of periventricula

Gardnerella vaginalis is a microorganism of great importance because of its participation in some gynecological diseases. Data contained in 3421 cervicovaginal cytology reports obtained from the Profamilia Clinic, Cartagena, Colombia between June 1993 and February 1994 were analyzed retrospectively and analytically. Cells suggestive of Gardnerella vaginalis were found in 723 reports, the greatest proportion being in the 25-29, 30-34, 35-39 year-old age groups (without statistical significance). There is a high frequency of Gardnerella vaginalis as related to healthy cervix and flux. Among the

In a study of Gardnerella vaginalis and anaerobic bacteria in non-specific vaginitis (NSV) and other genital disease 89 patients attending a genital medicine clinic had vaginal samples examined for conventional pathogens and for quantitative analysis of G vaginalis and aerobic and anaerobic bacterial flora. The overall incidence of G vaginalis was 20%; G vaginalis (mean concentration 7.0 log10/g of secretion) occurred predominantly in patients with NSV (57%) but also in sexual contacts of non-specific urethritis (NSU) (37.5%) and in patients with other conditions (11.8%). G vaginalis is theref

Gardnerella vaginalis, the bacterial species most frequently isolated from women with bacterial vaginosis (BV), produces a cholesterol-dependent cytolysin (CDC), vaginolysin (VLY). At sublytic concentrations, CDCs may initiate complex signaling cascades crucial to target cell survival. Using live-cell imaging, we observed the rapid formation of large membrane blebs in human vaginal and cervical epithelial cells (VK2 and HeLa cells) exposed to recombinant VLY toxin and to cell-free supernatants from growing liquid cultures of G. vaginalis. Binding of VLY to its human-specific receptor (hCD59) i

The Gardnerella vaginalis-infection of the urogenital tract is of clinical importance in females and of epidemiological importance in males. Females suffer from Bacterial Vaginosis, with a foul-smelling grey vaginal discharge with a pH of 5.0-5.5 which contains "clue cells", and from Sepsis. The isolation and identification of G. vaginalis i necessary in man. If G. vaginalis-infection is suspected, simultaneous infections with further STD-agents such as N. gonorrhoeae, C. trachomatis etc should be excluded. Metronidazole (1 g/day for 5 days) is the drug of choice in G. vaginalis-infection.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV), a form of vaginal dysbiosis, is associated with numerous adverse reproductive and obstetric outcomes. Gardnerella spp. are among the key bacteria identified in most BV cases. The formation of a polymicrobial Gardnerella-dominated biofilm on the vaginal epithelium is a characteristic diagnostic marker of BV. Gardnerella colonization and biofilm formation indicate a significant adhesion potential, the determinants of which remain unexplored. In this initial approach to identify Gardnerella adhesins, we analyzed the Cna protein located on the G. vaginalis ATCC 14018 cell

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a dysbiotic condition of the vaginal microbiome associated with higher risk of infection by Neisseria gonorrhoeae-the cause of gonorrhea. Here we test if one known facet of BV-the presence of bacterial cytolysins-leads to mobilization of intracellular contents that enhance gonococcal virulence. We cloned and expressed recombinant vaginolysin (VLY), a cytolysin produced by the BV-associated bacterium Gardnerella, verifying that it liberates contents of cervical epithelial (HeLa) cells, while vector control preparations did not. We tested if VLY mediates a well-known

Gardnerella spp. are hallmarks of bacterial vaginosis, a clinically significant dysbiosis of the vaginal microbiome. Gardnerella has four subgroups (A, B, C, and D) based on cpn60 sequences. Multiple subgroups are often detected in individual women, and interactions between these subgroups are expected to influence their population dynamics and associated clinical signs and symptoms of bacterial vaginosis. In the present study, contact-independent and contact-dependent interactions between the four Gardnerella subgroups were investigated in vitro. The cell free supernatants of mono- and co-cul

Gardnerella vaginalis is a key bacterium in the etiology of bacterial vaginosis (BV) and contributes to biofilm formation. Gardnerella is a facultative anaerobic bacterium, meaning it can grow both in the presence of oxygen and under anaerobic conditions. We conducted a prospective study in 2025, including 160 consecutive vaginal samples from women submitted for pathogenic bacteria. Clinical information on the referral form indicated in 87 women (54.4%), from which colpitis in 64 cases (73.6%). There were 43 pregnant women (26.9%), with an average age of 30.7 years. Each vaginal sample was cul

BACKGROUND: This case involves a 28-year-old pregnant woman (39w+2) who was admitted to obstetrics due to abdominal tightness and bacteremia with Gardnerella vaginalis which developed after caesarean section and vaginal myomectomy.
METHODS: A blood culture was performed, and the bacteria were identified through mass spectrometry.
RESULTS: Mass spectrometry data indicated that the infection bacteria were Gardnerella vaginalis. The patient's temperature returned to normal after oral ampicillin in combination with clindamycin.
CONCLUSIONS: Gardnerella vaginalis bacteremia is very rare in clini

BACKGROUND: Gardnerella vaginalis is a facultative anaerobic and small gram-variable rod bacterium. G. vaginalis, which can be transmitted through sexual contact, is the common pathogen for the feminine bacterial pathogen (BV). Here we describe a case of bacteremia in a patient after cesarean section caused by G. vaginalis in China. Case presentation: A 35-year-old woman suffered bacteremia caused by G. vaginalis after cesarean section. This patient, without evidence of polymicrobial infection, was treated with cefuroxime and had a good outcome.
CONCLUSIONS: G. vaginalis bacteremia is rarely

192 Gardnerella vaginalis antibody positive sera from artifically infected foxes, immunized foxes and foxes that the bacterial examination were positive were analysed by the established Dot-ELISA. The results showed that 187/192 were positive, the positive rate was 97.3%. Block and cross tests showed that the method was specific. The method was 28.1 times sensitive as PAT and 5.5 times sensitive as MAT respectively. The repeatability of the test was good and the positive coincidence rate among the three techniques was 100%.

Gardnerella vaginalis (G. vaginalis) is a bacterium rarely responsible for systemic infections and is exceptionally isolated from bronchopulmonary samples. Here, we report here two patients with trauma who were diagnosed with a G. vaginalis ventilatory acquired pneumonia (VAP) via mini bronchoalveolar lavage (mini-BAL). According to our observations, G. vaginalis was the only microorganism with a significant threshold and the identification was obtained by a reliable mean. There is no recommendation for antibiotic treatment for invasive G. vaginalis infection. We treated these infections with

Although bacterial vaginosis is the most common and benign vaginal infection worldwide, some cases of severe acute infections have been described in the literature. We report the case of a 57-year-old French female who developed a life-threatening postoperative peritonitis after a total hysterectomy with adnexectomy in the context of the removal of leiomyosarcoma. The microbiological analysis of the peritoneal fluid identified Gardnerella vaginalis and Atobopium vaginae. The final diagnosis was a septic shock induced by an early onset peritonitis caused by Gardnerella vaginalis and Atobopium v

Introduction Gardnerella vaginalis, traditionally linked to bacterial vaginosis (BV) in women, is increasingly detected in men with urethral symptoms. Its clinical relevance and co-infection patterns remain poorly defined. This study assessed the prevalence, quantitative load, and co-infections of G. vaginalis, and other urogenital pathogens in symptomatic men. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 418 symptomatic male patients using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), targeting 21 pathogens. Pathogen loads were reported as qualitative or quantitative (<10⁴ or ≥10⁴ copies/mL). Results At

Infections in the neonate caused by the vaginal commensal Gardnerella vaginalis are rare and mostly consist of bacteremia. A 4130-g term neonate developed an infection of a scalp hematoma with G. vaginalis. The infection developed in association with electronic fetal monitoring. The only clinical sign was an increase in size of the hematoma.
