The Mediating Role of Psychological Well-Being in the Relationship Between Gaslighting at the Workplace and Occupational Burnout Among Nurses.

Psychological well-being refers to an individual's ability to realize one's potential and manage one's challenges. Gaslighting is a type of emotional and psychological abuse, and its occurrence at the workplace can negatively impact psychological well-being, lead to burnout, and turnover. This study aimed to examine the relationship between gaslighting, occupational burnout, and psychological well-being, and the latter's mediating role in this relationship. In total, 443 nurses were recruited between January 26, 2026, and February 13, 2026, using purposive sampling. Data were collected on soci

Gaslighting in alleged assault ascertained as Munchausen syndrome transcending to malingering in highly counterintuitive self inflicted acid burns.

A factitious disorder leading to the self-infliction of highly counter-intuitive burns was diagnosed in a middle-aged female. The injuries were otherwise alleged to have been sustained by assault inflicted upon her by an unknown person. The case was diagnosed by medico-legal interpretation of injuries, in spite of a highly deceptive and concocted history by the patient and her husband. The entity was unique in being associated with magnificent primary, secondary and tertiary gains. The exploitation of the morbid sequel to malinger by the patient, and the involvement of the husband for the prol

Resilience Protects Nurses from Workplace Gaslighting and Quiet Quitting, and Improves Their Work Engagement: A Cross-Sectional Study in Greece.

Background: Although gaslighting is an alarming issue, the literature on predictors of this phenomenon is scarce. Objective: To examine the association between resilience and gaslighting in the workplace, quiet quitting, and work engagement among nurses. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in Greece during December 2024. We used the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) to measure levels of resilience in our sample. Moreover, we used the Gaslighting at Work Scale (GWS), the Quiet Quitting Scale, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-3 to measure workplace gaslighting, quiet quitting, and work

"Counteract the gaslighting" - a thematic analysis of open-ended responses about what women survivors of intimate partner sexual violence need from service providers.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) is a prevalent but misunderstood form of gender-based violence with significant impacts women's health and well-being. Research suggests that IPSV has a specific context and unique impacts, but little is known about how to tailor service responses. To address this gap, we explored help-seeking experiences and needs among IPSV survivors after disclosure. METHODS: This study draws on qualitative data from a subsample of women who participated in a cross-sectional survey about the service needs of intimate partner violence survivors. Women who

Dynamic metacognitive regulation prospectively predicts reduced interpersonal epistemic invalidation: a three-wave random-intercept cross-lagged panel study.

Interpersonal epistemic invalidation, often described within the broader gaslighting literature, has been linked to psychological distress, yet little is known about dynamic cognitive processes that may be associated with variation in reported exposure over time. Metacognitive awareness, defined as the capacity to monitor and regulate one's own cognitive states, has been theorized to confer greater epistemic destabilization. However, prior research has relied primarily on cross-sectional designs, precluding separation of stable individual differences from dynamic within-person change. In a thr

What do we know about medical invalidation and related concepts? - A scoping review and thematic analysis about the definitions, measurements, causes, consequences and potential solutions for medical invalidation.

BACKGROUND: Medical invalidation, medical gaslighting, and related constructs have gained visibility in public discourse but remain inconsistently defined in scientific literature. Despite growing research-often focused on specific diseases- to date, no single review has comprehensively synthesized their definitions, causes, consequences, or methods of measurement. This scoping review addresses this gap by examining medical invalidation and related constructs. METHODS: Using a preregistered protocol, we systematically searched PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ProQuest (diss

Serial Infidelity and Psychological Abuse: Diagnostic Blind Spots in Recognising Betrayal Trauma.

ObjectiveThis narrative review examines the intersection of serial infidelity, coercive control, and psychological abuse as an under-recognised form of betrayal trauma.MethodsGuided by PRISMA principles, a systematic search of four databases (PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) identified 47 peer-reviewed studies published between 1990 and 2025 that met inclusion criteria. Studies were included if they examined repeated infidelity within intimate relationships, associated patterns of coercive control, gaslighting (defined here as psychologically manipulating a person into questioning

Uterine Vulnerability: A Lived Experience Response to Endometriosis.

In this article, I examine the uterus as an object in relation to endometriosis and the epistemological struggle of sufferers to have their pain taken seriously. Defined by endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus, endometriosis affects multiple organs, causes severe pain, and is often undiagnosed for years. While outsiders frequently describe the condition, patient voices remain marginal. Using illness autoethnography and my experience in Germany, I show how delegitimized embodied knowledge shapes the identify work of coping with endometriosis. Medical gaslighting, stigma, limited literacy,

The lived experiences of reproductive-aged women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: PCOS is a complex health condition that affects up to 20% females of reproductive age worldwide, and approximately 5 million U.S. females of reproductive aged females. Despite the prevalence of the condition, research on the lived experiences of women with PCOS is limited, particularly in the United States. METHODS: This study employed a phenomenological qualitative design to explore the lived experiences of individuals diagnosed with PCOS. We conducted semi-structured interviews via web conferencing with 39 females 18-45 years of age, residing in the U.S. with PCOS. Transcribed i

Introducing the intruder paradox: "It's not the imposter syndrome, it's you don't want me in the field".

INTRODUCTION: Imposter phenomenon (IP) or syndrome is typically framed as a personal problem rooted in low self-esteem or anxiety that an individual must overcome to succeed. Critics argue that this framing overlooks external forces, such as discrimination, that engender feelings of inadequacy. Since women in medicine disproportionately experience both IP and workplace harms, our purpose was to examine the link between gender-based discrimination and IP from their point of view. METHODS: Women training and practicing across Canada were invited to participate via Twitter/X. Forty consented (n

Behavior Sequence Analysis of Victims' Accounts of Intimate Partner Violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) relates not only to physical forms of abuse, but also psychological, emotional, economic, and financial controlling behaviors. IPV is a dynamic, complex phenomenon that occurs over a relatively long period of time. While several measures of IPV exist, a method that can track the progression and escalation of such behaviors in relationships could offer more understanding and highlight key intervention points for individuals in such relationships. Behavior Sequence Analysis is used in the current research to map the chain and progression of behaviors in multiple r

Understanding the Dialogical Experiences of Puerto Rican Women With Fibromyalgia: An Intersectional Analysis.

Introduction: Fibromyalgia is a condition that is often misunderstood by the medical community. Misunderstandings are exacerbated when a patient is an ethnic minority, and recent literature suggests that ethnic minorities are shown to have a higher prevalence of fibromyalgia. Despite this information, many studies about fibromyalgia are conducted with Anglo-Americans while ethnic minorities are underrepresented. Methods: To address this research gap, this study uses qualitative interviews to discuss the dialogical experiences of Puerto Rican women with fibromyalgia through a combination of int

AWhen screams go unheard: covert violence, women victims, and social denial.

BACKGROUND: Covert violence-defined as a pattern of subtle, intentionally hidden, and socially camouflaged abusive behaviors that systematically erode a victim's reality, autonomy, and self-worth-remains a critically understudied dimension of gender-based violence. Distinct from overt psychological aggression, covert violence operates through tactics such as gaslighting, micro-invalidations, coercive control, and economic manipulation, often evading detection while inflicting profound harm. This scoping review systematically maps the evidence on its manifestations, psychosocial impacts, and th

Emotional Responses to Image-Based Sexual Harassment: Examining Help-Seeking and Changes in Social Media Behavior.

Image-based sexual harassment (IBSH), a form of technology-facilitated sexual violence, remains a growing concern for young women online. This study examined emotional responses, help-seeking, and social media behaviors among 400 undergraduate women (ages 18-22 years) who experienced IBSH, including cyberflashing, pressured sexting, image-related gaslighting about sharing intimate images, and repeated image-related cyberstalking or harassment. The most common emotions reported were disgust, shock, and feeling overwhelmed. Emotions such as embarrassment, anger, sadness, and anxiety were associa

Language Matters: What Not to Say to Patients with Long COVID, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Other Complex Chronic Disorders.

People with Long COVID, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), and other complex chronic disorders consistently report having difficulty obtaining effective and compassionate medical care and being disbelieved, judged, gaslighted, and even dismissed by healthcare professionals. We believe that these adversarial interactions and language are more likely to arise when healthcare professionals are confronting complex chronic illnesses without proper training, diagnostic biomarkers, or FDA-approved therapies. These problematic conversations between practitioners and patients

ME/CFS and the emotional toll of persistent disbelief: from epistemic to affective injustice.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a debilitating chronic illness whose sufferers are frequently met with disbelief, stigmatization, and psychologization in both clinical and social contexts. Recent work has used the concept of "epistemic injustice" to illuminate important dimensions of this problem, especially the ways in which ME/CFS patients are discredited as knowers and denied adequate interpretive resources. This paper argues that the harms associated with persistent disbelief in ME/CFS are not exhausted by this epistemic dimension. Drawing on recent philosoph
