The author critically analyses the involvement of prostaglandins in peptic ulceration. Clinical evidence suggests that for the treatment of peptic ulcer other available drugs (e.g. H2-blockers) are as effective and have fewer side-effects. A potential role in prevention of drug induced gastric mucosal damage (NSAID, ASA) may be verified in further studies.

Lymphocyte-like cells surrounded by a clear halo were found within the foveolar epithelium both in the fundus and the antrum in a gastrectomy specimen containing concomitantly a benign gastric ulcer. Electron microscopic studies demonstrated that these "in halo" cells had the ultrastructural characteristics of lymphocytes. "In halo" lymphocytes were found present in the subnuclear aspect of the foveolar cell cytoplasm, even in areas without inflammation in the lamina propria. The possible significance of the present finding is discussed.

A cyst of the tongue lined by gastric mucosa is described, and eight previously reported cases are reviewed. All the patients with heterotopic gastric mucosa of the tongue have been males whose ages range from 2 months to 31 years, the sole exception being our case in a newborn infant. Six lesions were cystic and three were solid. Five were located on the anterior one-third of the tongue, three at the base, and one at the tip. X-rays of 91 patients who underwent gastric surgery between 1973 and 1977 were retrospectively evaluated. We found 16 large mucosal prolapses through the gastroduodenal anastomosis and another six with a so-called anastomosis bulge. Of these patients, 77% presented complaints in relation to delayed gastric emptying. Circumscribed lipoid deposition in the gastric mucosa ("lipid island") can macroscopically be mistaken for "early cancer" of the stomach. The aetiology of the lipid islands is not quite clear. Precise diagnosis is possible only with selective biopsy and special staining. Such lipid islands were found in five patients among 1 200 gastrocopies.

Fundic mucosal pepsinogens reveal six major bands of protease activity on gel electrophoresis and four minor bands. Antral mucosa shows two major bands of activity; the four rapidly moving bands found in fundic mucosa are found in lesser activity in the antral mucosa. Duodenal mucosa shows only one slowly moving band of protease activity. There is a significant difference in the pepsinogen pattern when the uninvolved fundic mucosa of gastric ulcer patients is compared with that of cancer patients.A satisfactory method is described for separating the pepsinogens on column chromatography.

Alterations in the microbiome are associated with the development of gastric cancer. Our study aimed to identify dysbiotic features in early gastric cancer (EC).
