Basidiobolus haptosporus-like fungus as a causal agent of gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis.

Basidiobolus species were isolated from colonic biopsy samples of patients with gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis (GIB) in southern Saudi Arabia. Isolated fungi were initially identified using classical mycological tools and confirmed by sequence analysis of the large subunit ribosomal RNA gene. Phenotypic tests revealed zygomycete-like fungi which conform to those of Basidiobolus species. Five sequenced strains formed a monophyletic clade in the 28S ribosomal RNA gene phylogenetic tree. They shared 99.97% similarity with B. haptosporus and 99.97% with B. haptosporus var. minor, and relative

The prevention of post-operative adhesions using a gastrointestinal prokinetic agent.

Attempts have previously been made to reduce adhesion formation by promoting early intestinal motility. The prokinetic agent Cisapride was used in an animal model of end-to-end large bowel anastomoses. Twenty Wistar rats receiving Cisapride 1 mg/kg subcutaneously (sc) twice daily for two days post-operatively were compared with 20 controls receiving saline 0.2 mL in a similar regimen. The points of adhesion of the anastomosis to the following structures were enumerated: tubal fat; mesentery; omentum; caecum; small bowel; and abdominal wall. The treatment group had significantly fewer adhesions

Campylobacter pylori: a newly recognized infectious agent in the gastrointestinal tract.

Recent experience with the gastritis-associated organism Campylobacter pylori is reviewed, placing special emphasis on pathologic aspects. C. pylori is a spiral, gram-negative, urease-producing bacillus that has been found to infect the stomach in many people. C. pylori organisms are readily seen overlying the gastric epithelium, often in large numbers. Demonstration in gastric biopsies with silver stains is most vivid, but other faster, simpler stains such as Giemsa, acridine orange, and, at times, hematoxylin-eosin are satisfactory for routine purposes. The frequent occurrence of C. pylori i

Gnathostomiasis, a possible etiologic agent of eosinophilic granuloma of the gastrointestinal tract.

A 42-year-old Thai man from central Thailand came to Ramathibodi Hospital with the complaint of abdominal pain. Physical examination revealed localized tenderness in the right lower quadrant. The clinical impression was acute appendicitis and an operation was performed, revealing a large mass in the cecum. A right hemicolectomy was done for what was thought to be a carcinoma of the colon. The resected colon showed subserosal thickening on the antimesenteric side of the ascending colon with a constricted area at the middle portion. An immature adult Gnathostoma spinigerum was identified in the

Gadopentetate dimeglumine as an oral negative gastrointestinal contrast agent for MRCP.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the feasibility of using intravenous magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agent as a gastrointestinal oral negative contrast agent to null the bowel signal during MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). METHODS: In the first part of the study, a phantom study was performed to select the optimal concentration of MR contrast agent to be used as an oral negative contrast agent in MRCP. In the second part of the study, 23 consecutive patients suffering from different pancreaticobiliary diseases were imaged with a single-shot fast spin-echo pulse sequence. The data acquisition

Characteristics of patients with non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding taking antithrombotic agents.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The present study aimed to clarify the features and management of non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) in Japanese patients taking antithrombotic agents. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated the medical records of 560 patients who underwent emergency endoscopy for UGIB from 2002 to 2013. The patients were divided into two groups: group A, antithrombotic agent use; and group NA, no antithrombotic agent use. We compared clinical characteristics, comorbidities, and causes of UGIB between the groups. We also investigated management with antithrombotics. RES

Folic acid-PEO-labeled liposomes to improve gastrointestinal absorption of encapsulated agents.

The design of targeted oral liposomes is anticipated to improve the systemic delivery of poorly absorbed agents, such as proteins and peptides. A poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-folic acid (FA) derivative was prepared and evaluated for improving liposome transport across a model gastrointestinal cell line (Caco-2). FA-PEO-cholesterol (Chol) derivatives were synthesized and adsorbed at liposome surfaces encapsulating Texas Red((R))-Dextran 3000 (TR-dex), a poorly-absorbed, neutral, hydrophilic, large molecular weight (M(w)) marker. Apparent permeabilities (P(app)) of Caco-2 cells to FA-PEO conjugate

[Side effects of non-steroidal antirheumatic agents in the lower gastrointestinal tract].

Peptic gastroduodenal lesions due to nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID) are well known, but not the adverse effects of these preparations in the lower GI tract. The cases of 5 patients with NSAID-induced colitis are described and the pertinent literature is reviewed, which reveals a wide spectrum of alterations ranging from mild non-specific colitis to acute bleeding or perforation. The most important key to correct diagnosis is a careful drug history, and treatment is to discontinue the NSAID.

[IDEN Consensus on Management of Antithrombotic Agents in Patients Undergoing Gastrointestinal Endoscopy].

Antithrombotic agents, including antiplatelet agent and anticoagulants are widely used in Korea due to increasing incidence of cardio-cerebrovascular disease and aging population. The management of patients using antithrombotic agents during endoscopic procedures is an important clinical challenge. Clinical practice guideline regarding this issue which was developed by the Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy was published in 2020. However, since then, new evidence has emerged for the use of dual antiplatelet therapy and direct anticoagulant management, and revised guidelines were issu

Newer agents available for treatment of stress-related upper gastrointestinal tract mucosal damage.

Results of animal studies and human clinical trials assessing the efficacy of newer agents in the treatment of stress-related mucosal damage have been reviewed. Currently available data suggest that prostaglandin treatment is as effective in preventing and treating stress-induced mucosal injury as more established therapeutic modalities, but that the proposed efficacy of somatostatin infusion and tranexamic acid administration is highly suspect. Promising agents yet to be evaluated include omeprazole, allopurinol, and epidermal growth factor.

Dung beetles, biological control agents against gastrointestinal nematodes in livestock: In vitro test.

The control of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) remains a major challenge in grazing cattle, due to the widespread of anthelmintic resistance and limited treatment alternatives. This study aimed to assess whether dung beetles could serve as biological control agents against GIN infective larvae (GIN-L3). Four dung beetle species (Digitonthophagus gazella, Onthophagus australis, Euoniticellus intermedius, and Copris incertus) were collected from cattle paddocks. For each species, their effect on the vertical distribution of GIN-L3 in soil was assessed using vertical terrariums containing steril

[Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents--choice between disturbances of gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular toxicity].

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents are used more than 100 years. Most of them can cause undesirable effects on gastrointestinal tract: ulceration, bleeding and perforation of stomach and duodenum. Gastrointestinal toxicity is diminished when selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors are used. However, recent clinical trials have showed that the use of cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors increases the risk of cardiovascular event and cerebrovascular accident. According to the data such risk may be high using also nonselective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, however, it is lesser. Incidence rates

Apigenin as a Multi-Targeted Agent in Gastrointestinal Cancers: A Systems Pharmacology Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Apigenin, a dietary flavonoid found in various medicinal plants, has demonstrated notable anticancer effects. However, its multi-targeted molecular mechanisms in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers remain poorly understood. This study aimed to comprehensively identify the key molecular targets and signaling pathways influenced by apigenin in five major GI cancers: esophageal, gastric, colorectal, pancreatic, and liver cancers. METHODS: Natural plant sources of apigenin were identified, and apigenin-related genes were extracted from public databases and scientific literature. Protein-p

Rosmarinic Acid: A Potential Therapeutic Agent in Gastrointestinal Cancer Management-A Review.

Gastrointestinal cancers are still the leading cause of death worldwide. This is related, among other things, to the non-specific symptoms, especially in the initial stages, and also to the limited possibilities for treatment. Therefore, research is still being conducted to improve the detection of this type of cancer and increase the effectiveness of therapy. The potential application of natural compounds in cancer management deserves special attention. In the group of such products, there are polyphenolic compounds that reveal, e.g., anti-oxidative, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti

Role of baicalin as a potential therapeutic agent in hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal disorders: A review.

Baicalin is a natural bioactive compound derived from Scutellaria baicalensis, which is extensively used in traditional Chinese medicine. A literature survey demonstrated the broad spectrum of health benefits of baicalin such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, cardio-protective, hepatoprotective, renal protective, and neuroprotective properties. Baicalin is hydrolyzed to its metabolite baicalein by the action of gut microbiota, which is further reconverted to baicalin via phase 2 metabolism in the liver. Many studies have suggested that baicalin exhibits therapeutic

A gastrointestinal anti-infectious biotherapeutic agent: the heat-treated Lactobacillus LB.

Experimental in vitro and in vivo studies support the hypothesis that heat-treated, lyophilized Lactobacillus acidophilus LB cells and concentrated, neutralized spent culture medium conserve the variety of pharmacological, antimicrobial activities of the live probiotic strain against several infectious agents involved in well-established acute and persistent watery diarrhoea and gastritis. Heat-treated cells and heat-stable secreted molecules trigger multiple strain-specific activities explaining the therapeutic efficacy of L. acidophilus LB. This review discusses the current body of knowledge

[The effect of antianxiety and anti-depressive agents for the acid-related gastrointestinal diseases].

The first-line drug for acid-related gastrointestinal diseases is acid-suppressive agents (proton pump inhibitor(PPI), H2 receptor antagonist, etc.). However, among them, there are pathophysiological conditions that cannot be cured by acid-suppressive agents. These conditions are related to the complexity of the pathophysiology, and so called "PPI-resistant gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD)" is one of such conditions. In these pathophysiological conditions, hypersensitive esophagus to either acid, weakly acid and non-acid, and functional heartburn are included. Esophageal hypersensitivit
