Grape seed powder increases gastrointestinal motility.

Grape seed is an important natural bioactive product with various health benefits. Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) are pacemaker cells in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The present study investigated the effects of grape seed powder (GSP) on ICC properties and GI motility. GSP depolarized the pacemaker potentials of ICCs in a dose‑dependent manner. Y25130 or SB269970 slightly inhibited GSP‑induced effects. However, Y25130 and SB269970 together completely blocked GSP-induced effects. In the presence of inhibitors of protein kinase C, protein kinase A, or mitogen-activated protein kinase, G

Gastrointestinal motility disorders in neurologic disease.

The extrinsic and autonomic nervous system intricately controls the major functions of the gastrointestinal tract through the enteric nervous system; these include motor, secretory, sensory, storage, and excretory functions. Disorders of the nervous system affecting gastrointestinal tract function manifest primarily as abnormalities in motor (rather than secretory) functions. Common gastrointestinal symptoms in neurologic disorders include sialorrhea, dysphagia, gastroparesis, intestinal pseudo-obstruction, constipation, diarrhea, and fecal incontinence. Diseases of the entire neural axis rang

Gastrointestinal Motility Issues in Cancer Patients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This paper seeks to highlight GI motility disorders that are frequently present in patients with a malignancy. GI dysmotility can occur due to the cancer itself or as a consequence of medical and surgical treatments. Often, symptoms are nonspecific and the diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion. The goal of the paper is to review the common motility problems seen in patients with cancer, their clinical manifestations, and options for management. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies show that newer endoscopy techniques such as endoscopic mucosal dissection can cause esophageal dys

Electrical therapies for gastrointestinal motility disorders.

Gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders are common in clinical settings, including esophageal motility disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease, functional dyspepsia, gastroparesis, chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, post-operative ileus, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea and constipation. While a number of drugs have been developed for treating GI motility disorders, few are currently available. Emerging electrical stimulation methods may provide new treatment options for these GI motility disorders. Areas covered: This review gives an overview of electrical therapies that have been,

Primary gastrointestinal motility disorders in childhood.

Pediatric gastrointestinal motility disorders are a heterogeneous group of conditions that can be particularly difficult to recognize and manage. Symptoms are typically chronic and have a significant impact on quality of life. Medical therapies are limited and definitive treatment often requires surgical intervention that can alleviate certain symptoms, but predispose the patients to other comorbidities. The goal of this review is to summarize the current understanding of the primary gastrointestinal motility disorders in childhood and their management.

[Gastrointestinal motility disturbances in Chagas disease].

UNLABELLED: Serum antibodies against Trypanosoma Cruzi have been observed in 19% of the Chilean population. Marked differences in organ involvement have been reported in patients with Chagas disease. Chagas disease is rarely an aetiological factor for achalasia in Chile, which is different from reports in other countries of South America. In contrast, a high incidence of megacolon among these patients have been reported. AIM: To study the incidence of gastric and small intestinal motor disorders among these patients and their relationship to esophageal and colon motility disorders. PATIENTS

[Gastrointestinal motility and autonomic nerve dysfunction].

Gastrointestinal motility is greatly influenced by both the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the enteric nervous system (ENS). Dysfunction of ANS and/or ENS produces various kinds of dysmotility from the esophagus to the colon. Generalized autonomic dysfunction, often seen in diabetics, causes abnormal peristaltic waves in the esophagus, abnormal electrical activity of the stomach, delayed gastric emptying and delayed intestinal transit. Localized disorders of the enteric nervous system is seen in patients with achalasia and Hirschsprung's diseases. Functional disorders, without evidence of

Gastrointestinal motility in space motion sickness.

Gastrointestinal (Gl) symptoms in space motion sickness (SMS) are significantly different from those in ordinary motion sickness (MS). Vomiting is sudden, often unexpected, infrequent, never prolonged and usually without nausea. Inflight bowel sounds are absent in those with SMS but present after recovery and in those not affected. Recording and tabulation of sounds was the only technique that could be used as a measure of motility during spaceflight operations. There were 17 subjects, 6 unaffected by SMS, who made ambulatory recordings pre- and inflight. With one exception, all those affected

Gastrointestinal Motility Recording Using Balloon Insertion.

Gastrointestinal motility is one of the most important physiological functions of the digestive system. The migrating motor complex (MMC) is a characteristic form of movement that occurs in the gastrointestinal tract during fasting. The MMC is present in many species, including humans. Although the physiological role of the MMC is not completely understood, its abnormalities are associated with various diseases. The measurement of gastrointestinal motility is important for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases. Thus, a system was constructed using a rubber condom and polyethylene (PE) tub

Progesterone inhibitory role on gastrointestinal motility.

Progesterone is a steroidal hormone that is produced from the corpus luteum of the ovaries and from the placenta. The main function of progesterone is to promote the secretory differentiation in the endometrium of the uterus and to maintain pregnancy by inhibiting uterine contractions throughout pregnancy. Progesterone performs its actions by activating the classical progesterone nuclear receptors that affect gene transcription and by the non-classical activation of cell surface membrane receptors that accounts for the rapid actions of progesterone. Besides the reproductive roles of progestero

Endoscopic management of gastrointestinal motility disorders.

Gastrointestinal motility disorders include several heterogeneous units affecting the esophagus, stomach, small or large intestine and the rectum. These are namely Zenkers diverticulum, esophageal achalasia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastroparesis, constipation, Ogilvies syndrome and post-fundoplication dysphagia. Given the progressive development of endoscopic techniques, patients with most of the above mentioned diseases can be offered a solution consisting of a mini-invasive endoscopic procedure which has already become a first-choice treatment for some of the disorders. Effects of radiation upon gastrointestinal motility.

Whether due to therapeutic or belligerent exposure, the gastrointestinal effects of irradiation produce symptoms dreaded by a majority of the population. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping are hallmarks of the prodromal phase of radiation sickness, occurring hours to days following radiation exposure. The prodromal phase is distinct from acute radiation sickness in that the absorptive, secretory and anatomic changes associated with radiation damage are not easily identifiable. It is during this phase of radiation sickness that gastrointestinal motility significantly changes. In

Gastrointestinal motility disturbances in celiac disease.

It is quite frequent to recognize celiac patients who show gastrointestinal motor abnormalities in clinical practice. In fact, in 30 to 60% of patients, physical examination and dyspeptic symptoms (epigastric discomfort, early satiety) suggest a gastrointestinal motility disorder. Consistent data are now available on the presence of a disturbed motility of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, gallbladder, and colon of untreated celiac patients. Gastrointestinal abnormalities differ in different gastrointestinal districts. In fact, esophageal transit, gastric and gallbladder emptying, and o

Gallbladder motility and functional gastrointestinal disorders.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders can be defined as 'a variable combination of chronic or recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms not explained by structural or biochemical abnormalities'. Motor disorders are considered to be one of the pathogenetic mechanisms of these symptoms; in fact, it has been hypothesized that the smooth muscle of the whole gastrointestinal tract could be involved. Gallbladder motility has been evaluated in patients with dysmotility-like dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome and biliary disorders without gallstones; results of these observations are often inconclusive, co

Gastrointestinal motility testing--a personal perspective.

The role of motility tests in the evaluation of some common disorders in which motility has been assumed to play a role is reviewed. Three separate areas, non-cardiac chest pain, constipation and the irritable bowel syndrome are discussed. In each area, considerable difficulty in the clinical definition of these disorders persists and presents a major obstacle to the evaluation of diagnostic tests. With regard to non-cardiac chest pain, it is apparent that gastro-oesophageal reflux and sensory/perception abnormalities, rather than dysmotility, are the predominant factors, and investigations sh

Postoperative pain relief and gastrointestinal motility.

Gastrointestinal motility is normally inhibited for 2-3 days after abdominal surgery. The methods used for postoperative pain relief may themselves also influence gastrointestinal function. Although parenteral and epidural administration of opioids delays gastric emptying and prolongs intestinal transit time, epidural anesthesia with local anesthetics does not influence gastrointestinal motility in volunteers. Clinical studies show that epidural anesthesia does not delay gastric emptying or prolong intestinal transit time as much as parenteral and epidural opioids. Therefore, for postoperative
