Gender inequities remain a major barrier to women's access to reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) services. To address this gap, the Improve Primary Health Care Service Delivery (IPHCSD) project integrated a set of gender-responsive strategies into primary health care (PHC) systems. This paper presents lessons from implementing gender-responsive strategies that empowered women and communities while enhancing access to essential health services. A quasi-experimental embedded implementation research with a participatory mixed-methods approach was employed. The study combine

BACKGROUND: Transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse (TGD) people experience stigma in healthcare settings impacting healthcare utilization, including avoidance of care due to anticipated discrimination. Gender-affirming care refers to care for medical gender affirmation, such as gender-affirming hormones and surgery, as well as general care that affirms and respects TGD patients. This study sought to explore the experiences of TGD adults to inform gender-affirming care delivery and develop an actionable framework for practice.
METHODS: Between May-October 2021, one-time individual in-depth

Despite numerous efforts to raise awareness, many hemophilia carriers and female persons with hemophilia (PWHs) remain undiagnosed. Between May 2021 and April 2023, we identified potential and obligate carriers of hemophilia A (HA) and hemophilia B (HB) by updating pedigrees of all PWHs followed at the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc, Brussels. Retrospective data on previously screened females were collected, including bleeding history, coagulation factor levels, and testing for the proband's pathogenic variant. In addition, a proactive approach involved sending 125 invitation letters to un

INTRODUCTION: Although there are more women than men working in the healthcare system in Europe, reports of gender-related inequities within the healthcare workforce are still emerging. Our study aimed to gather insights from women, representing different healthcare professions, who work in the field of geriatric medicine and gerontology, to better understand their perspectives and experiences.
METHODS: In February 2025, we distributed an anonymous online survey to women affiliated with the PROGRAMMING COST Action 21122. We summarised the quantitative data and performed an analysis of the res

Despite the social and regulatory expectation that contemporary clinical trials for new pharmaceutical drugs will include a diverse set of research participants, achieving appropriate representation in clinical research remains tenuous. Of ongoing concern is how experts and regulators navigate decisions about drug approvals when presented with clinical studies that have limited demographic data. Drawing on regulatory discussions about Descovy, an HIV-prevention drug that was studied only in cisgender men and transgender women who have sex with men, we analyze a contentious debate over the mean

Purpose: Gender inequality is a barrier to education toward women and accessibility to health facilities, which are important for preventing vertical transmission. This study was conducted to analyze the impact of gender equity on vertically transmitted infections (hepatitis viruses, human immunodeficiency virus [HIV], and syphilis) using country-level indicators. Methods: The relationship between the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI), which is indicator of gender equity, and vertical transmission was analyzed. GGGI scores were collected from 153 countries in 2020. Vertical transmission included

AIMS: To calculate the gender distribution of trichiasis cases in trachoma communities in Vietnam and Tanzania, and the gender distribution of surgical cases, to determine if women are using surgical services proportional to their needs.
METHODS: Population based data from surveys done in Tanzania and Vietnam as part of the national trachoma control programmes were used to determine the rate of trichiasis by gender in the population. Surgical records provided data on the gender ratio of surgical cases.
RESULTS: The rates of trichiasis in both countries are from 1.4-fold to sixfold higher in

Awards and invited keynotes are critical markers of scholarly achievement that shape visibility, career advancement and retention in academia. Yet extensive evidence across science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine shows that women remain underrepresented among recipients of these honors. To evaluate equity within the coastal geosciences and engineering (CGE) community, we compiled the gender distribution of 1,138 awards and invited keynotes granted by professional societies and conferences relevant to CGE over the past 50 years. We additionally reviewed publicly available nom

Women from sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia, are underrepresented in biomedical research due in part to limited access to high-quality research training and mentorship. Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem in Ethiopia, with a limited number of female Ethiopian scientists engaged in TB-related research. To improve access to TB-related research training among junior women scientists, our NIH Fogarty International Center-funded D43 program released an all-women request for applications (RFA), which substantially increased the number of women applying for research training and

Sex (biological attributes associated with being male or female) and gender (sociocultural-driven traits and behaviors related to being a man or a woman) are emerging as important determinants of disease course and response to therapy in patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Although psoriatic disease (PsD) is equally prevalent in men and women, the condition affects them in different and unique ways, giving rise to sex- and gender-related differences in clinical presentation, including baseline disease activity, disease course, and response to treatment. BACKGROUND: Gender equity in global health is a target of the Sustainable Development Goals and a requirement of just societies. Substantial progress has been made towards control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) via mass drug administration (MDA). However, little is known about whether MDA coverage is equitable. This study assesses the availability of gender-disaggregated data and whether systematic gender differences in MDA coverage exist.
METHODS: Coverage data were analyzed for 4784 district-years in 16 countries from 2012 through 2016. The percentage of districts rep

BACKGROUND: Identification of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people has been limited to diagnoses and text rather than self-identified gender identity (SIGI), representing a subset of TGD people. In 2017, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) implemented SIGI, allowing for precise identification of TGD veterans, including subgroups (transgender man, transgender woman, and nonbinary).
OBJECTIVES: Health conditions, adverse social determinants of health (SDOH), and health care utilization were compared among veterans (1) identified by SIGI only, both SIGI and diagnosis/text, diagnosis/

BACKGROUND: The taboo and stigma surrounding menstruation remain deeply entrenched in diverse sociocultural contexts, generating significant inequalities in education, health, employment, and social participation. These barriers disproportionately affect individuals in vulnerable situations and are closely linked to what is known as menstrual poverty; defined as limited access to hygiene products, reliable information, and adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions. This review aims to critically analyse recent scientific literature on menstrual health and management, identifyin

BACKGROUND: In 2020, almost 100 million people were blind or visually impaired from cataract. Cataract surgery is a cost-effective treatment for cataracts. In Nigeria, twice as many women are cataract blind as men. Cataract surgical rate (CSR, the number of cataract operations per million population per year in a defined geographical location) is an output indicator of cataract surgical services. The recommended target CSR for sub-Saharan Africa is 1000/year. The aim of this study was to assess the CSR in men and women in Imo state, Nigeria.
METHODS: A retrospective review of cataract surgery

BACKGROUND: Safe drinking water is a fundamental human right, yet more than 785 million people do not have access to it. The burden of water management disproportionately falls on women and young girls, and they suffer the health, psychosocial, political, educational, and economic effects. While water conditions and disease outcomes have been widely studied, few studies have summarized the research on drinking water and implications for gender equity and empowerment (GEE).
METHODS: A systematic review of primary literature published between 1980 and 2019 was conducted on drinking water exposu

BACKGROUND: Gender diversity is lacking in the orthopedic workforce, and patient outcomes are known to be negatively affected when gender inequity exists. Following an unpublished needs assessment, we sought to evaluate participants' proposed solutions to gender inequity faced by female orthopedic surgeons in Canada and to translate the range of solutions into a medical education model.
METHODS: Open-text responses from a gender-bias survey of Canadian orthopedic surgeons who identified as women were analyzed qualitatively by 2 experts. The questions covered the domain of changes required to

INTRODUCTION: Gender equity is increasingly recognized as essential to integrity and sustainability of the medical workforce, yet significant disparities remain. This study aims to evaluate longitudinal trends in gender equity within Brazilian rheumatology, focusing on career advancement, work-family interface, and workplace safety.
METHODS: This comparative cross-sectional study analyzed two self-administered, web-based surveys conducted at different moments among members of the Brazilian Society of Rheumatology (SBR), to assess temporal changes. The surveys included Reuma Equity (2022, n =

BACKGROUND: Based on the 2016 and 2021 ESMO Women for Oncology (W4O) surveys, which revealed persistent gender disparities in oncology, we conducted a national survey to examine career-related challenges among oncology professionals in Croatia and compare them with international trends. METHODS: We administered an anonymous online survey adapted from the 2021 ESMO W4O questionnaire, contextualized for the Croatian setting. The survey explored the perceived impact of gender, political affiliation, religion, and sexual orientation on career development. Responses were analyzed by gender and age.
