INTRODUCTION: Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people’s health is a public health issue impacting a significant portion of the population. Health-related decisions are made in an artificially uncertain and contentious climate in which knowledge plays a central role. Rapid developments in the field, along with the increasing politicization of language in research, contribute to the proliferation of terms that shape and complicate bibliographic searches. METHOD: This study of the journal Santé publique focuses on publications available online since 2001 that include conte

The primary care of older transgender and gender diverse people.

BACKGROUND: Older transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people have often experienced repeated episodes of transgender (trans)-related discrimination resulting in health inequalities including poorer physical and mental health, and reduced screening rates. OBJECTIVE: General practitioners' (GPs) roles with TGD older people include providing culturally safe and trans inclusive care, as well as delivering healthcare for conditions that are more prevalent in this population, such as cardiovascular disease, depression or anxiety and cognitive impairment. GPs may initiate and maintain gender affirm

Data gaps for symptoms of myocardial infarction in transgender and gender diverse patients: a brief literature review and call to action.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and has garnered several avenues of efforts to reduce incidence and mortality in patient populations. There has also been an increase in reported populations of transgender and gender diverse individuals as well as a reported increased risk for cardiovascular disease in this population. Despite this, there is no current research assessing warning signs of myocardial infarction and no standard of care exists for educating transgender and gender diverse individuals regarding their heart health. This article reviews the kno

Applying an Abolitionist Framework to Understand and Address Mental Health Concerns Among Transgender and Gender-Diverse Populations.

This article explores the mental health concerns of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals within a mutual aid and harm reduction framework. Despite historical strides toward equity and care in the public health sector, TGD people face structural discrimination, polyvictimization, and worsening political hostility that heighten mental health disparities. The authors critique medical and nursing practices shaped by carceral logic and call for new approaches rooted in equity and care. Clinical recommendations emphasize affirming, trauma-informed, and community-based care, while highlig

Chronic Disease and Stress Among Transgender and Gender-Diverse People.

Trans people experience higher rates of chronic disease, across multiple health systems. This increased risk is driven by chronic stress from prejudice, discrimination, and violence. Exposure to chronic stress alters one's physiology and increases vulnerability to chronic disease. As the most trusted health professionals, nurses can play a unique role in addressing interpersonal and structural stressors by creating affirming clinical environments and advocating for policy change.

Beyond the Binary: Gender Inclusivity in Schizophrenia Research.

Schizophrenia is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder with significant differences in the incidence and symptomology between cisgender men and women. In recent years, considerably more attention has been on the inclusion of sex and gender in schizophrenia research. However, the majority of this research has failed to consider gender outside of the socially constructed binary of men and women. As a result, little is known about schizophrenia in transgender and gender-nonconforming populations. In this review, we present evidence showing that transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals have e

Systematic review of instruments for measuring sex and gender attributes: assessment of measurement properties and utility in research on clinical and functional outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: To identify and synthesize instruments used to assess sex and gender attributes in relation to clinical and functional outcomes in adults. METHODS: We searched four databases from inception to November 20, 2023, to identify English-language studies on clinical and functional outcomes that used instruments of sex and gender attributes. On July 20, 2025, we searched MEDLINE for studies on the measurement properties of the instruments previously identified. We used Holmbeck and colleagues' evidence-based criteria and rated quality based on measurement properties, including frequency

The political phantasm underlying questions of gender.

Drawing on the psychoanalytic treatment of Blu, a trans/non-binary patient, this paper introduces the notion of the political phantasm as a metapsychological operator linking unconscious phantasy to historically situated regimes of recognition. Blu's suffering is not reducible to intrapsychic or familial dynamics; rather, it calls for an expanded metapsychology capable of accounting for the co-production of subjectivity within the collective. The analytic setting becomes a space in which historically situated excitations - traumas, exclusions, excesses - are co-constructed and symbolically rew

Broadening conceptualizations of trauma among transgender and gender-diverse populations: A meta-analysis of gender minority stress and posttraumatic stress symptoms.

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals experience disproportionately high rates of discrimination, rejection, and violence (i.e., distal minority stressors). Minority stress theory suggests that experiences of these distal stressors increase mental health risk for TGD populations. Consequently, TGD populations face mental health disparities, including disproportionately high rates of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). Thus, the present study conducted a meta-analysis of the associations between distal minority stressors, as measured by the Gender Minority Stress and Resilience mea

Sociodemographic and Mental Health Characteristics of Adults with Different Gender Trajectories.

There is growing interest in the experiences of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people and those who discontinue or reverse their gender transition, known as detransition. While an understanding of their similarities and differences could inform better psychological support, no study has simultaneously recruited and compared both groups. In this study, we describe and compare two groups of 29 TGD (Mage = 28.28, 72.4% assigned female at birth) and 22 detransitioning participants (Mage = 28.73, 63.6% assigned female at birth). The criterion for categorizing the detransition group was stoppi

Interpretation of blood test results in transgender and gender diverse people undergoing gender-affirming hormone therapy.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people are seeking initiation of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) in general practice. GAHT influences interpretation of common blood test results. OBJECTIVE: This article outlines the impact of GAHT on common blood test results. DISCUSSION: For individuals undergoing GAHT, haemoglobin/haematocrit and serum creatinine should be interpreted according to the reference range of an individual's affirmed gender.

Teaching Care with Pride: Integrating Transgender and Gender-Diverse Prespectives in Nursing Education.

This article discusses the challenges of including transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people in Nursing Education. Discussions focus on theoretic and practical understandings of how binary sex and gender norms impact the teaching of care for TGD people. There are suggestions for how to infuse content related to TGD health throughout nursing education curriculum. There are specific calls to action for individuals, schools of nursing, and nursing education organizations like the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the American Nurses Association, and the National League for Nursing.

"That's probably what euphoria feels like": Nonbinary Black womxn's gender expression in an antitrans (and anti-Black [womxn]) America.

This community-based participatory action research study employed interpretative phenomenological analysis to investigate how 11 nonbinary Black womxn experienced and understood their gender expression in relation to their gendered-racial identity. Researchers used purposive sampling and semistructured qualitative interviews to elicit participants' responses to the following research inquiry: "How does being a nonbinary Black womxn manifest within your gender expression?" Participant responses informed three overarching themes regarding nonbinary Black womxn gender expression: (a) the brillian

Trans psychology amid anti-trans legislation in the United States.

This special issue highlights cutting-edge applications of psychological theory and science to the well-being and health of transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse (trans) people in the United States in the context of sweeping state and federal-level anti-trans legislation and executive actions. The 16 articles in this special issue demonstrate rigorous, creative, intersectional, and equity-focused approaches across multiple subdisciplines by psychologists working in numerous sectors and settings (e.g., higher education, health care, government) to promote the health and civil rights of tra

Lessons learned from youth-engaged research methods to conduct qualitative analysis with a transgender and gender-diverse youth advisory board.

Although community-engaged research is becoming more common, youth-engaged research methods, particularly its application to qualitative analysis, remains rare. The Research on Identity Specific Eating Disorder Symptoms (RISES) Project developed, partnered with, and maintained a youth advisory board of five transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse youth in all stages of a qualitative study, including qualitative analysis. Youth advisory board members contributed to a codebook, coded two to six transcripts each, provided feedback on themes and supporting quotes, and authored this paper. Afte

Blood donor safety and selection criteria for individuals self-identifying as trans or non-binary.

Social movements in favour of greater diversity, equity and inclusion have led societies to re-examine the concepts of sex assigned at birth and gender identity. These have also impacted healthcare systems and blood operators. Gender identities extending beyond the concept of cisgender binary individuals might have an impact on the safety of blood components for recipients, and on the safety of the donation process itself. Furthermore, the procedures put in place by blood operators to welcome donors from sexual and gender diversity might have a major impact on donors' psychological well-being

Comment on: 'Living in a world that's not about us': The impact of everyday life on the health and wellbeing of autistic women and gender diverse people.

This correspondence comments on Grove et al.'s autistic-led qualitative study on the health and wellbeing of autistic women and gender-diverse people. It argues that oral health should be considered within autism-aware women's healthcare because toothbrushing, dental attendance, oral pain, sensory distress, and communication barriers may affect daily living, access to care, and overall wellbeing. The letter proposes a practical integration pathway based on simple oral-health screening, autism-aware dental referral, sensory and communication adaptations, and collaboration with primary care, men
