Expression of tobacco class II catalase gene activates the endogenous homologous gene and is associated with disease resistance in transgenic potato plants.

We have previously shown that healthy potato plants respond poorly to salicylic acid (SA) for activating disease resistance against the late blight fungal pathogen Phytophthora infestans. However, SA is essential for the establishment of potato systemic acquired resistance (SAR) against P. infestans after treatment with the fungal elicitor arachidonic acid (AA). To understand the molecular mechanisms through which AA induces SA-dependent SAR in potato, we have recently studied the expression of potato class II catalase (Cat2St) in comparison with its tobacco homologue, Cat2Nt, which has previo

MYB Superfamily in Brassica napus: Evidence for Hormone-Mediated Expression Profiles, Large Expansion, and Functions in Root Hair Development.

MYB proteins are involved in diverse important biological processes in plants. Herein, we obtained the MYB superfamily from the allotetraploid Brassica napus, which contains 227 MYB-related (BnMYBR/Bn1R-MYB), 429 R2R3-MYB (Bn2R-MYB), 22 R1R2R3-MYB (Bn3R-MYB), and two R1R2R2R1/2-MYB (Bn4R-MYB) genes. Phylogenetic analysis classified the Bn2R-MYBs into 43 subfamilies, and the BnMYBRs into five subfamilies. Sequence characteristics and exon/intron structures within each subfamily of the Bn2R-MYBs and BnMYBRs were highly conserved. The whole superfamily was unevenly distributed on 19 chromosomes a

An Integrative morphology-hormone-transcriptome analysis of uniconazole induced internode shortening in Paeonia lactiflora.

Plant height represents a critical ornamental trait in Paeonia lactiflora. While uniconazole has been demonstrated to effectively modulate plant height in this species-enhancing its ornamental value and supporting commercial production-the molecular mechanisms responsible for uniconazole-induced dwarfism remain largely elusive. In this study, we employed an integrated approach combining morphological, physiological, cytological, and molecular analyses to elucidate the dwarfing mechanism in P. lactiflora 'Dafugui'. Our results indicate that uniconazole treatment significantly suppressed interno

Transcriptomic and Phenotypic Analyses Reveal the Molecular Mechanism of Dwarfing in Tetraploid Robinia pseudoacacia L.

Polyploid breeding techniques aid in the cultivation of new forestry cultivars, thus expanding the suite of strategies for the improvement of arboreal traits and innovation within the field of forestry. Compared to diploid Robinia pseudoacacia L. (black locust) 'D26-5①' (2×), its dwarfed homologous tetraploid 'D26-5②' (4×) variety has better application prospects in garden vegetation guardrails and urban landscape. However, the molecular mechanism of the generation and growth of this dwarf variety is still unclear. Here, plant growth and development as well as histological differences between

Cytological, Phytohormone, and Transcriptome Analyses Provide Insights into Persimmon Fruit Shape Formation (Diospyros kaki Thunb.).

Fruit shape is an important external feature when consumers choose their preferred fruit varieties. Studying persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) fruit shape is beneficial to increasing its commodity value. However, research on persimmon fruit shape is still in the initial stage. In this study, the mechanism of fruit shape formation was studied by cytological observations, phytohormone assays, and transcriptome analysis using the long fruit and flat fruit produced by 'Yaoxianwuhua' hermaphroditic flowers. The results showed that stage 2-3 (June 11-June 25) was the critical period for persimmon fr

Microarray-based expression analysis of phytohormone-related genes in rice seedlings during cyanide metabolism.

Plants exhibit highly coordinated, dynamic reactions to various abiotic stressors. As cyanide is a non-essential element for plant growth, entry inside plants can exert toxicity at multiple levels. In plant, hormone plays a pivot role under stress conditions. The fluctuations of stress-responsive hormones help in altering cellular dynamics and hence play a central role in coordination and adaptation growth responses under stress. This study focusses on uptake of cyanide in Oryza sativa seedlings and its effect on physiological and on genetic level. Microarray approach has been focused on trans

Background: Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook. (C. lanceolata) is an important timber tree species in southern China. However, the molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying adventitious root formation during cutting propagation remain largely unclear. The lack of genetic resources has hindered molecular breeding efforts in this species. Methods: In this study, transcriptome analysis was performed on the root systems of scions from elite C. lanceolata clones at 7, 30, and 60 d after cutting. Results: Approximately 69.30 Gb of clean data were obtained. De novo assembly and gene prediction yi

Study on the physiological mechanism and transcriptional regulatory network of early fruit development in Gleditsia sinensis Lam. (Fabaceae).

BACKGROUND: Gleditsia sinensis Lam. (Fabaceae) is a medicinal legume characterized by its spines and pods, which are rich in saponins, polysaccharides, and various specialized metabolites with potential medicinal and industrial applications. The low fruit set rate in artificially cultivated economic forests significantly impedes its development and utilization. A comprehensive understanding of the cellular events, physiological and biochemical processes, and molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying fruit initiation and early fruit development is essential for enhancing yield. However, such i

Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis to Identify Brassinosteroid Response Genes.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are plant growth-promoting steroid hormones. BRs affect plant growth by regulating panels of downstream genes. Much effort has been made to establish BR-regulated gene expression networks, but there is little overlap among published expression networks. In this study, we built an optimal BR-regulated gene expression network using the model plant Arabidopisis (Arabidopisis thaliana). Seven- and 24-d-old seedlings of the constitutive photomorphogenesis and dwarfism mutant and brassinosteroid-insensitive 1-701 (bri1-701) BRI1-like receptor genes1 (brl1) brl3 triple mutant s

Integrated Transcriptomic and Proteomic Analysis Identifies Novel Regulatory Genes Associated with Plant Growth Regulator-Induced Astringency in Grape Berries.

Astringency influences the sensory characteristics and flavor quality of table grapes. We tested the astringency sensory attributes of berries and investigated the concentration of flavan-3-ols/proanthocyanidins (PAs) in skins after the application of the plant growth regulators CPPU and GA3 to the flowers and young berries of the "Summer Black" grape. Our results showed that CPPU and GA3 applications increase sensory astringency perception scores and flavan-3-ol/proanthocyanidin concentrations. Using integrated transcriptomic and proteomic analysis, differentially expressed transcripts and pr

Changes in endogenous phytohormones regulated by microRNA-target mRNAs contribute to the development of Dwarf Autotetraploid Chinese Cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis).

Polyploidization is considered as the major force that drives plant species evolution and biodiversity. The leaves of Chinese cabbage, an important vegetable crop valued for its nutritional quality, constitute the main edible organ. In this study, we found that autotetraploid Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis) generated from a doubled haploid (DH) line via isolated microspore culture exhibits a dwarf phenotype, along with thick leaves and delayed flowering. Abscisic acid (ABA) and brassinosteroid (BR) levels were significantly lower in autotetraploids compared to DHs. Comparative

Transcriptional landscape of Atractylodes chinensis contracting root rot.

Atractylodes chinensis is among the most economically valuable medicinal plants, serving as the primary source of Atractylodis rhizoma. Its pharmacological activities in treating digestive and urinary disorders have been officially recognized in both the Chinese and Japanese Pharmacopoeias. Whereas, the natural scarcity of Atractylodes chinensis necessitates enhanced cultivation strategies, particularly targeting root rot resistance to ameliorate crop yield and sustainable production. This study implemented controlled cultivation of Atractylodes chinensis and collected rhizome samples exhibiti

Incomplete functional divergence drives MADS-box gene synergy during floral development in tomato.

Genetic synergy arises from interactions between functionally related genes that control complex traits in plants and animals. Synergy occurs when the combined effect of multiple genes exceeds the additive contribution from each individual gene. However, genetic mechanisms that drive and maintain synergy remain underexplored. Here, we investigated synergistic interactions among SEPALLATA (SEP) MADS-box genes during floral development in tomato. We discovered that SEP gene synergy emerges from duplicated genes that partitioned functions to regulate inflorescence architecture and floral organ id

The slow wound-response of gammaVPE is regulated by endogenous salicylic acid in Arabidopsis.

Vacuolar processing enzyme (VPE) is a cysteine protease responsible for the maturation of various vacuolar proteins in higher plants. The Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. gammaVPE gene, encoding a VPE homologue, is slowly up-regulated in both local and systemic leaves in response to wounding. To clarify the activation mechanism of gammaVPE, we examined the accumulation of gammaVPE mRNA after hormone treatments or after wounding in wild-type and various mutant plants of Arabidopsis. Both ethylene and jasmonic acid (JA) are known as signal molecules that activate the wound-responsive genes. Howe

Developmental stages and episode-specific regulatory genes in andromonoecious melon flower development.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Given the lack of specific studies on floral development in melon (Cucumis melo L.), we carried out an extensive study involving morphological and transcriptomic analyses to characterize floral development in this species. METHODS: Using an andromonoecious line, we analysed the development of floral buds in male and hermaphrodite flowers with both light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Based on flower lengths, we established a correlation between the developmental stages and four main episodes of floral development and conducted an extensive RNA sequencing ana

The influence of different light quality and benzene on gene expression and benzene degradation of Chlorophytum comosum.

Benzene, a carcinogenic compound, has been reported as a major indoor air pollutant. Chlorophytum comosum (C. comosum) was reported to be the highest efficient benzene removal plant among other screened plants. Our previous studies found that plants under light conditions could remove gaseous benzene higher than under dark conditions. Therefore, C. comosum exposure to airborne benzene was studied under different light quality at the same light intensity. C. comosum could remove 500 ppm gaseous benzene with the highest efficiency of 68.77% under Blue:Red = 1:1 LED treatments and the lowest one

Full-length floral transcriptome analysis reveals a modified ABCDE model with D-class gene loss and the molecular mechanism of double flower formation in Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis.

The ABCDE model serves as the fundamental framework for understanding floral organ development in angiosperms, yet its systematic transcriptome-wide characterization and functional validation remain lacking in Chinese narcissus (Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis), a traditional ornamental flower with high cultural and economic value. In this study, we identified 16 ABCDE model genes from the PacBio full-length floral transcriptome of the single-flower cultivar 'Jinzhanyintai', including nine A-class, two B-class, one C-class, and four E-class homologs. No canonical D-class genes were detected a

Transcriptome analysis reveals key defense genes associated with resistance to banana blood disease.

BACKGROUND: Bananas are a globally significant crop, but their production is threatened by banana blood disease (BBD), caused by Ralstonia syzygii subsp. celebesensis (Rsc). While resistant cultivars like 'Khai Pra Ta Bong' (AAA genome) have been identified, the genetic basis of resistance remains unclear. This study uses RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to investigate gene expression changes in 'Khai Pra Ta Bong' over seven days post-infection with Rsc isolate MY4101. Candidate genes associated with resistance were also evaluated in other cultivars, including resistant, moderately resistant, and high

Comparative transcriptome analysis provides insights into the dwarfing mechanism of pear trees.

BACKGROUND: Dwarfism is crucial for intensive cultivation and labor-saving management in modern orchards. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying pear tree dwarfing remain largely unclear. Here, we performed comparative transcriptome analysis between dwarf pear germplasm and pear cultivar 'Cuiguan'. RESULTS: The dwarf pear germplasm exhibited significantly shorter internode and branch length compared to 'Cuiguan'. Histological analysis revealed that cortical cells in the dwarf pear germplasm were disordered and irregular, and longer than those of 'Cuiguan'. Comparative transcriptome anal

YABBY Genes in the Development and Evolution of Land Plants.

Mounting evidence from genomic and transcriptomic studies suggests that most genetic networks regulating the morphogenesis of land plant sporophytes were co-opted and modified from those already present in streptophyte algae and gametophytes of bryophytes sensu lato. However, thus far, no candidate genes have been identified that could be responsible for "planation", a conversion from a three-dimensional to a two-dimensional growth pattern. According to the telome theory, "planation" was required for the genesis of the leaf blade in the course of leaf evolution. The key transcription factors r
