Stress management: a program designed to facilitate coping.

1. Continual exposure to work-related stressors compounds nurses' workloads, increases their stress levels, and places increased demands on their abilities to adapt. 2. Nurses need to learn and routinely use coping measures to prevent exhaustion and burnout. 3. An in-house stress management program can help nurses learn to cope with constant exposure to work-related stressors, halt the cyclic process of stress, prevent burnout, and decrease turnover.

[Changes in the processes of the lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense system in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome].

The objective of this study was to evaluate the lipid peroxidation (LPO) and antioxidant defense (AoD) system in patients with varying hypoxia in obstructive sleep apnoea/hypnoea syndrome (OSA/HS). The study of the LPO-AOD system in patients with OSA/HS revealed the specific features of some metabolic reactions that could reflect the development of adaptive-compensatory processes. The patients with upper airway hyperresistance syndrome were found to have increases in general blood antioxidant activity (AOA) and dienic conjugate levels, which might be interpreted as an initial stress reaction o

[Morphologic characteristics of lymphocytes 6 years after the Chernobyl accident].

The examination of peripheral blood lymphocytes from persons exposed to low-dose radiation after the Chernobyl accident demonstrated that the exposure to radiation at the time of the accident and further living in the contaminated territory entail a significant increase in the number of cells with a large thick nucleus and scare cytoplasm. Such morphological picture may be attributed to stable adaptation typical for persistent activation of the general adaptation syndrome and is explained by adaptation-stress relations.

Stress and magnesium.

The General Adaptation Syndrome is characterized by three stages: Alarm Reaction - Adaptation - Exhaustion. Results of animal experiments and clinical observations indicate that both central nervous and peripheral systemic reactions to acute stress - e.g. noise - can be accentuated by magnesium deficiency and reduced by mild hypermagnesemia, respectively. Concerning long term suboptimal magnesium supply, experimental data indicate that a stage of adaptation might be achieved during a certain period of time, preceded and followed by stages of markedly decreased resistance.U

[The post-hospital care of the newborn and infant with disturbances of the adaptation period].

Medical care of the newborn or infant discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit is difficult and requires close co-operation between the primary care pediatrician and the team of specialists. The authors are trying to collect the rules of pediatric guidance of the high-risk patients to help in practical approach to such children and highlight the issues requiring special attention. The newborn should be discharged with precisely described plan of following treatment and controls. Despite careful discussion with parents on child's clinical status, many questions and daubts appear as sool

[Function of the respiratory system in miners with chronic regional hypobaric hypoxia and hypothermia].

The role of meteotropic factors (low atmospheric pressure and cold climate) in the development of functional disorders of respiratory system was studied for miners of the North-East region of the USSR. Regularities in forming external respiration dysfunctions during adaptation of migrating population and development of dust pathology are demonstrated. It was found that general adaptation syndrome in miners exposed to chronic hypobaric hypoxia and hypothermia is characterized by development of hyperventilation syndrome, leading to increase in dust load and moderate mobilization of respiratory t

[Ongoing conflict situations and physical disease].

In most cases psychosomatic patients are not vitally threatened. Nevertheless almost half of the emergency patients have got psychical disturbances (e.g. neurotic heart disease, states of hyperventilation or vertigo). A reason is not only the personal development of early childhood. More often the problems are to be found within strained relations. The physical illness can be conceived as an (unconscious) attempt to master a conflict or loss, as narcissistic reparation, as adaption-effort or even as self destruction Selye's theory of stress presents the linkage between the organ pathology and

General Intelligence Framework to Predict Virus Adaptation Based on a Genome Language Model.

Most human viral pandemics are caused by animal-originated viruses with human adaptation. It is challenging to infer adaptation from viral genes or their coded protein sequences, particularly when the data labels for modeling are inadequate or the input sequence to be predicted is incomplete. Here, we developed a semi-supervised General Intelligence framework to predict Virus Adaptation based on Language-model-embedded protein sequences (GIVAL) for blind input of virus sequences. The language model in GIVAL, named virus Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (vBERT), was pretr

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Psychosocial Well-being and Adaptation in Children and Adolescents with Asperger's Syndrome.

Mental health could worsen in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, their parents could be more at risk for an increase in anxiety and depression symptomatology. This study aims to understand the adaptation and the psychosocial well-being in a sample of 16 males aged 10-21 years old with Asperger's syndrome after the quarantine for COVID-19 when they return to school and partially to their activities in September 2020. The adopted approach is multi-informant with a battery of questionnaires on psychological health and adaptation given

[Several functions of the visual analyzer in chronic alcoholic patients].

The authors examined 615 patients with chronic alcoholism. The study demonstrated an increased number of individuals with myopia, presbyopia, amblyopia, angiomas and angiosclerosis among them as compared to that of the general population. The frequency of optical nerve atrophies in the patients was not high (0.32%). In 205 cases the function of colour sensory and darkness adaptation was determined. The highest frequency of colour sensory was in the group of patients with the withdrawal syndrome. Eventually this function had a tendency towards restitution. The velocity of darkness adaptation wa

Stress-induced arrhythmic disease of the heart--Part I.

This review deals with the following principal concepts: (1) Heart injuries in single severe stress episodes manifested primarily in disturbances of membrane lipid bilayer, sarcolemmal Na, K-pump, and sarcoplasmic Ca-pump with concurrent limited disturbances of the heart energy supply, namely, of the creatine kinase and glycolysis systems. These disturbances cause small focal myocardial lesions and reduce cardiac electrical stability: the fibrillation threshold falls and ectopic activity increases. In repeated stress, this damage, localized mainly in the richly innervated conduction system, ac

Discussion: Implications of the stress syndrome to animal performance and health.

Similarities of blood metabolic and immunologic reactions that occur in cattle exposed to heat stress, other chronic stress-inducing environmental factors, and administration of pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid hormones have been described. Chronic stress can predispose cattle to both metabolic and infectious diseases. Improved characterization of endocrine, metabolic, and immunologic relationships offers promising means for studying effects of various treatment regimens on animal health, production, and reproduction.

The effects of physical and psychological stress on the gastro-intestinal tract: lessons from animal models.

Physical and psychological stresses are widely accepted as triggers and / or modifiers of the clinical course of diverse gastrointestinal disorders such as peptic ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease. Growing experimental evidence from a variety of models such as immobilization, thermal injury or early maternal deprivation in laboratory animals uniformly supports the ability of stress to induce the development of gastric ulcers, altered gastrointestinal motility and ion secretion, and increased intestinal permeability leading to the passage of antigens to the lamina pr

Dietary Interventions for Short Bowel Syndrome in Adults.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a rare but complex medical condition that requires expertise in management. The etiology in adults is commonly surgical resection for Crohn's disease or mesenteric ischemia and is classified based on the anatomy of the remaining bowel. An accurate assessment of the anatomy and nutritional and hydration status is necessary. Dietary therapy is essential to induce adaptation in SBS, provide adequate nutritional needs, and manage symptoms including stool burden. As general SBS guidelines on nutritional support and dietary interventions exist, SBS is unique to the indi

What is stress? Concepts, definitions and applications in seed science.

'Stresses' that impact upon seeds can affect plant reproduction and productivity, and, hence, agriculture and biodiversity. In the absence of a clear definition of plant stress, we relate concepts from physics, medicine and psychology to stresses that are specific to seeds. Potential 'eustresses' that enhance function and 'distresses' that have harmful effects are considered in relation to the seed life cycle. Taking a triphasic biomedical stress concept published in 1936, the 'General Adaptation Syndrome', to the molecular level, the 'alarm' response is defined by post-translational modificat
