Advancing Gene Feature Selection: A Synergistic Approach with Co-expression Networks and Genetic Algorithms.

INTRODUCTION: Gene feature selection is essential in bioinformatics and medical research, as it identifies gene subsets closely associated with specific diseases or biological traits from high-dimensional gene datasets. High-dimensional gene data causes the curse of dimensionality, leading to sparsity, complex inter-feature relationships, and significant noise. These issues undermine the reliability of conventional statistical methods in capturing underlying biological information. While gene feature selection can enhance classification model accuracy and reduce computational complexity, exist

A technique for improving petroleum products forecasts using grey convolution models and genetic algorithms.

Forecasting energy consumption is a major concern for policymakers, oil industry companies, and many other associated businesses. Though there exist many forecasting tool, selecting the most appropriate one is critical. GM(1,1) has proven to be one of the most successful forecasting tool. GM(1,1) does not require any specific information and can be adapted to predict energy consumption using a minimum of four observations. Unfortunately, GM(1,1) on its own will generate too large forecast errors because it performs well only when data follow an exponential trend and should be implemented in a

Genetic algorithms identify individuals with high risk of severe liver disease caused by schistosomes.

Schistosomes induce severe hepatic disease, which is fatal in 2-10% of cases, mortality being higher in cases of co-infection with HBV or HCV. Hepatic disease occurs as a consequence of the chronic inflammation caused by schistosome eggs trapped in liver sinusoids. In certain individuals, the repair process leads to a massive accumulation of fibrosis in the periportal spaces. We and others have shown that genetic variants play a crucial role in disease progression from mild to severe fibrosis and explain why hepatic fibrosis progresses rapidly in certain subjects only. We will review here publ

Optimization of artificial neural network models through genetic algorithms for surface ozone concentration forecasting.

INTRODUCTION: This study proposes three methodologies to define artificial neural network models through genetic algorithms (GAs) to predict the next-day hourly average surface ozone (O(3)) concentrations. GAs were applied to define the activation function in hidden layer and the number of hidden neurons. METHODS: Two of the methodologies define threshold models, which assume that the behaviour of the dependent variable (O(3) concentrations) changes when it enters in a different regime (two and four regimes were considered in this study). The change from one regime to another depends on a spe

Designing an explainable algorithm based on XGBoost and genetic algorithm for predicting hospitalization needs of COVID-19 patients.

Timely identification of COVID-19 outpatients who are at risk of hospitalization is critical for preventing clinical deterioration and optimizing healthcare resources. Although machine-learning models have demonstrated high predictive accuracy, their limited interpretability often hinders clinical adoption. This study aims to develop a hybrid explainable framework that combines the predictive strength of XGBoost with clinically interpretable rule-based explanations to support decision-making in real clinical settings. A retrospective dataset of 1278 COVID-19 patients was analyzed after applyin

Creating Scale Measures of Latent Factors: A Genetic Algorithmic Approach.

Genetic algorithms (GAs) are quantitative optimization techniques that have exclusively been utilized for scale abbreviation despite their potential application to new scale development. Here, we modeled the trait constructs of the triarchic psychopathy framework (boldness, meanness, disinhibition) as latent factors, and then applied a modified GA to select items for assessing each using model-estimated factor scores as targets. Items for the new scales were selected from a separate construct-relevant inventory, the Elemental Psychopathy Assessment, based on their ability to efficiently index

Algorithm of genetic diagnosis for patients with head and neck paraganglioma-update.

Paragangliomas are rare tumors originating from the paraventricular bodies of the autonomic nervous system located in the adrenal glands, chest, abdomen, pelvis and head and neck. Tumors of this type account for 0.5% of head and neck cancers, 0.03% of all cancers and their incidence is estimated at 1-30/100,000 per year. Head and Neck Paragangliomas (HNPGL) are localized in carotid body, tympanic cavity or jugular foramen. It is established that HNPGL may be associated with mutations of the SDH complex, with SDHD being the most prevalent. However, SDHB, SDHC and SDHAF are also potential causes

Genetic justification of severe COVID-19 using a rigorous algorithm.

Recent studies suggest excessive complement activation in severe coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). The latter shares common characteristics with complement-mediated thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). We hypothesized that genetic susceptibility would be evident in patients with severe COVID-19 (similar to TMA) and associated with disease severity. We analyzed genetic and clinical data from 97 patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Through targeted next-generation-sequencing we found an ADAMTS13 variant in 49 patients, along with two risk factor variants (C3, 21 patients; CFH,34 patients). 31 (32%)

Genetic algorithm for multiple bus line coordination on urban arterial.

Bus travel time on road section is defined and analyzed with the effect of multiple bus lines. An analytical model is formulated to calculate the total red time a bus encounters when travelling along the arterial. Genetic algorithm is used to optimize the offset scheme of traffic signals to minimize the total red time that all bus lines encounter in two directions of the arterial. The model and algorithm are applied to the major part of Zhongshan North Street in the city of Nanjing. The results show that the methods in this paper can reduce total red time of all the bus lines by 31.9% on the o

Gender-Driven English Speech Emotion Recognition with Genetic Algorithm.

Speech emotion recognition based on gender holds great importance for achieving more accurate, personalized, and empathetic interactions in technology, healthcare, psychology, and social sciences. In this paper, we present a novel gender-emotion model. First, gender and emotion features were extracted from voice signals to lay the foundation for our recognition model. Second, a genetic algorithm (GA) processed high-dimensional features, and the Fisher score was used for evaluation. Third, features were ranked by their importance, and the GA was improved through novel crossover and mutation met

RBCeq: A robust and scalable algorithm for accurate genetic blood typing.

BACKGROUND: While blood transfusion is an essential cornerstone of hematological care, patients requiring repetitive transfusion remain at persistent risk of alloimmunization due to the diversity of human blood group polymorphisms. Despite the promise, user friendly methods to accurately identify blood types from next-generation sequencing data are currently lacking. To address this unmet need, we have developed RBCeq, a novel genetic blood typing algorithm to accurately identify 36 blood group systems. METHODS: RBCeq can predict complex blood groups such as RH, and ABO that require identific

Passive Location Resource Scheduling Based on an Improved Genetic Algorithm.

With the development of science and technology, modern communication scenarios have put forward higher requirements for passive location technology. However, current location systems still use manual scheduling methods and cannot meet the current mission-intensive and widely-distributed scenarios, resulting in inefficient task completion. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method called multi-objective, multi-constraint and improved genetic algorithm-based scheduling (MMIGAS), contributing a centralized combinatorial optimization model with multiple objectives and multiple constraint

Combined clinical and genetic testing algorithm for cervical cancer diagnosis.

RELEVANCE: Human growth hormone (hGH) is synthesized, stored, and secreted by somatotroph cells in the pituitary gland, and promotes human growth and metabolism. Compared to a normal pituitary, a GH-secreting pituitary adenoma can secrete excessive GH to cause pathological changes in body tissues. GH proteoform changes would be associated with GH-related disease pathogenesis. PURPOSE: This study aimed to elucidate changes in GH proteoforms between GH-secreting pituitary adenomas and control pituitaries for the predictive diagnostics, targeted prevention, and personalization of medical service

Application of BCUT metrics and genetic algorithm in binary QSAR analysis.

The application of three-dimensional H-suppressed BCUT metrics (BCUTs) in binary QSAR analysis was investigated using carbonic anhydrase II inhibitors and estrogen receptor ligands as test cases. Variable selection was accomplished with a genetic algorithm (GA). Highly predictive binary QSAR models were obtained for both sets of compounds within 200 GA generations. The derived binary QSAR models were validated with two sets of compounds not included in the training sets. The results indicate that BCUTs are very useful molecular descriptors, and the genetic algorithm is a very efficient variabl

Enabling Synthetically Feasible Molecular Editing in Drug Discovery via Reaction-Regulated Graph-Based Genetic Algorithms.

Machine learning-based generative models have enabled the efficient and accurate exploration of vast chemical space in recent decades. However, many approaches do not explicitly account for the synthetic feasibility of generated molecules due to the challenge of integrating both theoretical and experimental perspectives. To overcome this challenge, here we propose a reaction-regulated graph-based genetic algorithm, namely R2GB-GA, that enables synthetically feasible molecular editing through effectively exploring complex chemical space for molecular design. By embedding domain-specific reactio

Feature selection from nocturnal oximetry using genetic algorithms to assist in obstructive sleep apnoea diagnosis.

Nocturnal pulse oximetry (NPO) has demonstrated to be a powerful tool to help in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) detection. However, additional analysis is needed to use NPO alone as an alternative to nocturnal polysomnography (NPSG), which is the gold standard for a definitive diagnosis. In the present study, we exhaustively analysed a database of blood oxygen saturation (SpO(2)) recordings (80 OSA-negative and 160 OSA-positive) to obtain further knowledge on the usefulness of NPO. Population set was randomly divided into training and test sets. A feature extraction stage was carried out: 16 f

Application of two machine learning algorithms to genetic association studies in the presence of covariates.

BACKGROUND: Population-based investigations aimed at uncovering genotype-trait associations often involve high-dimensional genetic polymorphism data as well as information on multiple environmental and clinical parameters. Machine learning (ML) algorithms offer a straightforward analytic approach for selecting subsets of these inputs that are most predictive of a pre-defined trait. The performance of these algorithms, however, in the presence of covariates is not well characterized. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this manuscript, we investigate two approaches: Random Forests (RFs) and Multivariate A
