RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to preliminarily investigate whether an enlarged geniculate ganglion fossa (GGF) on temporal bone computed tomography can diagnose GGF fracture in patients with traumatic facial paralysis by evaluating the diameter of the GGF.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients who underwent computed tomography before confirmation of GGF fracture on otologic surgery were recruited into a study group. Additionally, a cohort of 107 patients with no histories of head trauma, no structural abnormalities of inner ear, and no clinical symptoms of facial ne

Geniculate ganglion neurons provide a major source of innervation to mammalian taste organs, including taste buds in the soft palate and in fungiform papillae on the anterior two thirds of the tongue. In and around the fungiform papillae, before taste buds form, neurotrophin mRNAs are expressed in selective spatial and temporal patterns. We hypothesized that neurotrophins would affect electrophysiological properties in embryonic geniculate neurons. Ganglia were explanted from rats at gestational day 16, when growing neurites have entered the papilla core, and maintained in culture with added b

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic transcanal approaches to the facial nerve allow excellent exposure of the tympanic facial nerve. This approach becomes limited when access is required to the more proximal geniculate ganglion and labyrinthine portion of the facial nerve. The aim of this report was to determine the feasibility of a transmastoid endoscopically assisted approach to the geniculate ganglion and labyrinthine facial nerve. This is an endoscopic cadaveric dissection and video review at a university anatomical laboratory.
METHODS: A total of 12 endoscopic cadaveric dissections were performed. A

Gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) was demonstrated by immunohistochemistry and high-performance liquid chromatography to be present in the great majority of neurons in the geniculate ganglion of rat and man. This was in contrast to findings in the sphenopalatine ganglion of rat, where only little GRP was found, and in the otic, trigeminal, glossopharyngeal-vagal and internal carotid ganglia, where no GRP-containing cells could be demonstrated. The peptide was not detected by immunohistochemistry in nerve fibers within structures innervated from the ganglion (tongue, soft palate, retroauricular s

BACKGROUND: Vascular lesions historically named 'geniculate ganglion hemangiomas' (GGH) require clinical and biological re-evaluation.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To challenge the historical nomenclature of 'geniculate ganglion hemangiomas' and to explore the implications of their reclassification as venous malformations (VMs), focusing on function-preserving and minimally invasive strategies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective clinical, surgical, and histopathologic reviews of six patients treated for geniculate ganglion vascular lesions at a tertiary referral center. Surgical approaches included end

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is often challenging in patients who do not present with classic symptoms. Brain MRI can play a pivotal role, as several imaging findings, such as an empty sella appearance (ESA), have been shown to be associated with IIH. Yet, none of the MRI signs have been shown to have a high sensitivity and specificity. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that presence of a geniculate ganglion diverticulum (GGD) is a potential imaging marker for the detection of IIH.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an IRB-approved, single-institution

Facial nerve hemangiomas are a rare entity of skull base lesions that arise within the temporal bone and affect the seventh cranial nerve.1 They are vascular malformations arising from the vascular plexuses surrounding the nerve. Although slow growing and overall benign in nature, they can cause significant facial nerve dysfunction even at small sizes.2 Facial nerve hemangiomas can arise within different segments of the facial nerve within the temporal bone, but most commonly arise near the geniculate ganglion.3 We describe the case of a 34-year-old female who presented with progressive right

PURPOSE: To describe the suprameatal-transzygomatic root endoscopic approach (STEA) to the geniculate ganglion (GG), the labyrinthine facial nerve (FN) and epitympanum.
METHODS: The feasibility and limits of the STEA, maintaining the integrity of the ossicular chain, were analysed. Ten human cadaveric ears were dissected. Step-by-step description of the technique and relevant measurements were taken during the approach. The visualization and surgical working field on the anterior and posterior medial epitympanum, GG, greater superficial petrosal nerve, the labyrinthine FN and suprageniculate

CONCLUSIONS: Human-rat geniculate ganglion (GG) have multiple origins: (1) An initial proximity (20 μm) to the endocranial foramen of the IAM, suggests neural crest induction; and (2) The influence of epibranchial placodes: the tensor tympani muscle (TTM) and the otic apical coil.
OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to determine the comparative development of human-rat GG.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A light microscopic study of the GG in human material obtained from spontaneous abortions at 9, 13, 14, 17, 18, and 30 weeks, and one neonate was done. This study examined Webster rat embryos and a

Herpes simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) was inoculated into 48 rabbits by 3 different routes: 10 rabbits were dosed by mouth, 18 rabbits injected in the tongue and 14 injected in the perineurium of the facial nerve at its entrance into the stylomastoid foramen. Some of the animals were killed after a week and others after three weeks. Facial palsy was produced in none of the cases. Seroconversion was demonstrated in the peripheral blood of 100% of the inoculated animals. Cultures of macerate of the facial nerve and geniculate ganglion, as well as of the ipsilateral medulla, were negative. DNA from

Herpes zoster, an acute specific viral infection, occurs more commonly than is generally supposed. It should be differentiated from other diseases involving the ear and skin; it must be considered as a possible etiologic agent in some palsies of the facial, glossopharyngeal or vagal nerves. The type of cephalic herpes zoster should be carefully differentiated; cases involving the "geniculate zone" may be other than "Ramsay Hunt's syndrome." This syndrome is now defined as a herpes zoster eruption of the external ear at the "geniculate zone" with involvement of the seventh or seventh and eighth

Geniculate ganglion hemangioma (GGH) is rarely presented in the neurosurgical literature. It extends extradurally on the middle fossa floor and displaces the intratemporal part of the facial nerve. Surgical treatment is advisable at early symptoms. Proposed techniques include fascicular-sparing resection or nerve interruption with grafting. No definitive conclusions exist about the superiority of a certain technique in preserving facial nerve integrity and function. Through the description of a surgically managed symptomatic GGH, we herein discuss literature data about the surgical results of

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of a dehiscent geniculate ganglion on routine temporal bone computed tomography (CT).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Two hundred seventy-eight consecutive temporal bone CT examinations for a total of 556 sides were reviewed. One hundred ninety-one sides were excluded. Reasons for exclusion included reconstructed coronal views, no coronal views, or a pathologic process, which involved the geniculate ganglion. Six examinations were from patients with clinical superior canal dehiscence confirmed by su

Facial nerve palsy has long been considered to have an infectious etiology. Recent diagnostic analyses in children and adults have provided convincing evidence that reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV), sometimes during infectious mononucleosis, can lead to cranial nerve VII palsy. The site of reactivation from latency is the geniculate ganglion. Virus most likely enters the ganglion during chickenpox, via the sensory branches of the facial nerve located on the ear and tongue. Retrospective reviews suggest that patients with VZV-related facial nerve palsy have poorer outcomes than othe

Facial nerve schwannoma is a rare benign tumor arising from Schwann cells of the facial nerve, most commonly involving the geniculate ganglion and intratemporal segments, and often presenting with nonspecific clinical features that may delay diagnosis. We report the case of a 35-year-old woman presenting with progressive left-sided facial nerve palsy evolving over 15 months, ultimately classified as House-Brackmann grade VI. High-resolution computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-defined lesion centered on the tympanic segment of the facial nerve with extension to th

Facial nerve schwannoma is a very rare benign tumor representing less than 1% of intrapetrous lesions. Our patient is a forty-one year old female who has suffered from recurrent right facial palsy for the last six years. She was first misdiagnosed as having Bell's palsy and received corticosteroids which resulted in little improvement. She then had facial nerve decompression surgery which resulted in a partial improvement. Since then, she has suffered from recurrent attacks of facial palsy. Two years ago, she came to our hospital seeking further treatment options. The final diagnosis made by M

Hemangioma of the facial nerve (FN) is a very rare benign tumor whose origin is the vascular plexi that surround the nerve. The transpetrous, retrosigmoid, and middle cranial fossa (MCF) routes are the traditional and most widely used approaches to reach these lateral skull base neoformations. However, this very complex region can be reached through an exclusive transcanal endoscopic procedure in selected cases. One of these was a 42-year-old patient who had been presenting a worsening left FN paralysis (grade VI according to the House-Brackmann scale at the time of visit) for 22 months withou

We describe an unusual presentation of geniculate ganglion venous malformation, a rare facial nerve lesion, emphasizing the importance of the differential diagnosis, imaging characteristics, and controversies in management. A child presented with moderate right-sided conductive hearing loss and a House-Brackmann grade I facial nerve function bilaterally. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass demonstrating features consistent with a geniculate ganglion venous malformation. To our knowledge, this is the first pediatric case of geniculate ganglion venous malformation pr
