The rapid dissemination of the macrolide resistance gene erm(B) will likely compromise the efficacy of macrolides as the treatment of choice for campylobacteriosis. More importantly, erm(B) is always associated with several multidrug resistance genomic islands (MDRGIs), which confer resistance to multiple other antimicrobials. Continuous monitoring of the emergence of erm(B) and analysis of its associated genetic environments are crucial for our understanding of macrolide resistance in Campylobacter In this study, 290 Campylobacter isolates (216 Campylobacter coli isolates and 74 Campylobacter

Examinations of 86 (100%) patients aged 16 to 68 years who had urinary tract infection could isolate 67 Escherichia coli cultures, 32 of them in acute pyelonephritis with marked destructive changes, 24 during an exacerbation of chronic cystitis, 11 in asymptomatic bacteriuria. Twenty E. coli strains isolated from feces of apparently healthy individuals were used as a control. The genetic determinants associated with nucleotide sequences of pathogenicity islands (PI) known for enterobacteria: hlyA, hlyB, cnf-1, papC, fimA, and irp-2 were determined in bacteria, by using polymerase chain reactio

Geographic isolation, natural selection, and demographic history interact to shape genomic divergence, yet their combined effects in island endemics remain poorly understood. We investigated the continental Euptelea pleiosperma and the island endemic E. polyandra using whole-genome resequencing of 119 and 50 individuals, respectively, providing a direct comparison of evolutionary outcomes under contrasting demographic and environmental contexts. The two species diverged in the Late Miocene (~6.4 Ma), broadly coinciding with the separation of the Japanese Archipelago. Genome-wide divergence exh

Non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica (NTS) are diverse and important bacterial pathogens consisting of more than 2600 different serovars, with varying host-specificity. Here, we characterized the poultry-associated serovars in Israel, analysed their resistome and illuminated the molecular mechanisms underlying common multidrug resistance (MDR) patterns. We show that at least four serovars including Infantis, Muenchen, Newport and Virchow present a strong epidemiological association between their temporal trends in poultry and humans. Worrisomely, 60% from all of the poultry isolates tested (n = 1

The completion of Escherichia coli K1 genome has identified several genomic islands that are present in meningitis-causing E. coli RS218 but absent in the non-pathogenic E. coli MG1655. In this study, the role of various genomic islands in E. coli K1 interactions with intestinal epithelial cells (Caco-2) and kidney epithelial cells (MA104) was determined. Using association assays, invasion assays, and intracellular survival assays, the findings revealed that the genomic island deletion mutants of RS218 related to P fimbriae, S fimbriae, F17-like fimbriae, non-fimbrial adhesins, Hek and hemaggl

Tsetse (Diptera: Glossinidae) are the exclusive cyclical vector of human and animal African trypanosomoses and continue to threaten health and agricultural productivity across sub-Saharan Africa. Area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) strategies provide a coordinated framework for combining tools such as the sterile insect technique (SIT), insecticide-treated targets and cattle, and others. This review examines the success and challenges of AW-IPM in tsetse control and advances in population genetics, species distribution modeling, and landscape genetics that improve identification of c

Genomic islands (GIs) play a crucial role in the spread of antibiotic resistance, virulence factors and antiviral defense systems in a broad range of bacterial species. However, the characterization and classification of GIs are challenging due to their relatively small size and considerable genetic diversity. Predicting their intercellular mobility is of utmost importance in the context of the emerging crisis of multidrug resistance. Here, we propose a large-scale classification method to categorize GIs according to their mobility profile and, subsequently, analyze their gene cargo. We based

Streptococcus agalactiae are important pathogenic bacteria that cause severe infections in humans, especially neonates. The mechanism by which ST-17 causes invasive infections than other STs is not well understood. In this study, we sequenced the first genome of a S. agalactiae ST-17 strain isolated in Brazil using the Illumina HiSeq 2500 technology. S. agalactiae GBS90356 ST-17 belongs to the capsular type III and was isolated from a neonatal with a fatal case of meningitis. The genome presented a size of 2.03 Mbp and a G + C content of 35.2%. S. agalactiae has 706 genes in its core genome an

To better understand Neisseria meningitidis genomes and virulence, microarray comparative genome hybridization (mCGH) data were collected from one Neisseria cinerea, two Neisseria lactamica, two Neisseria gonorrhoeae and 48 Neisseria meningitidis isolates. For N. meningitidis, these isolates are from diverse clonal complexes, invasive and carriage strains, and all major serogroups. The microarray platform represented N. meningitidis strains MC58, Z2491 and FAM18, and N. gonorrhoeae FA1090. By comparing hybridization data to genome sequences, the core N. meningitidis genome and insertions/delet

The objective of this study was to mobilise the Acinetobacter genomic island 1-A (AGI1-A) from Enterobacter hormaechei EclCSP2185 (E. cloacae complex) and to search for the distribution and structure of AGI1-related elements in the NCBI database. AGI1-A was transferred to Escherichia coli. Analysis of the attachment (att) sites could locate the possible recombination crossover in the att sequences at position 10-11 (GG) in the last 18 bp of trmE. In silico detection of AGI backbones in the WGS database identified AGI variants in Salmonella enterica (83 strains), Vibrio cholerae (33), E. hormae

HGT acquisition of genomic island 2 (GI-2) into the Brucella genome endowed these organisms with two transglycosylases which function in the final steps of the O-polysaccharide (OPS) polymerization. Here, the investigation of the brucellaphage Pr genome revealed sequence similarities to GI-2 in two DNA regions, the Chelativorans sp. BNC1 and the Ochrobactrum anthropi ATCC 49188 DNAs, respectively. This led the investigation of the published GI-2 elements, using the phage attB and attP sequences as hallmarks of the integration site. The study identified a Mesorhizobium loti integrative, conjuga

PURPOSE: Hypospadias is one of the most frequent genital malformations in the male newborn, and results from abnormal penile and urethral development. The etiology of hypospadias remains largely unknown despite intensive investigations. Fetal androgens have a crucial role in genital differentiation. Recent studies have suggested that molecular mechanisms that underlie the effects of androgens on the fetus may involve disruption of epigenetic programming of gene expression during development. We assessed whether epigenetic modification of DNA methylation is associated with hypospadias in a case

BACKGROUND: Runs of homozygosity (ROH) are continuous homozygous segments of the DNA sequence. They have been applied to quantify individual autozygosity and used as a potential inbreeding measure in livestock species. The aim of the present study was (i) to investigate genome-wide autozygosity to identify and characterize ROH patterns in Gyr dairy cattle genome; (ii) identify ROH islands for gene content and enrichment in segments shared by more than 50% of the samples, and (iii) compare estimates of molecular inbreeding calculated from ROH (FROH), genomic relationship matrix approach (FGRM)

Escherichia coli strains that cause disease outside the intestine are known as extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) and include pathogens of humans and animals. Previously, the genome of avian-pathogenic E. coli (APEC) O1:K1:H7 strain O1, from ST95, was sequenced and compared to those of several other E. coli strains, identifying 43 genomic islands. Here, the genomic islands of APEC O1 were compared to those of other sequenced E. coli strains, and the distribution of 81 genes belonging to 12 APEC O1 genomic islands among 828 human and avian ExPEC and commensal E. coli isolates was determ
