Mapping malaria in municipalities of the Coffee Triangle region of Colombia using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have been used extensively for the development of epidemiological maps of malaria but not in the Coffee Triangle region of Colombia, endemic for P. vivax, P. falciparum and P. malariae. Surveillance case data (2007-2011) were used to estimate annual incidence rates per Plasmodium spp. (cases/100,000 pop) to develop the first malaria maps in the 53 municipalities of this region (departments Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda). The GIS software used was Kosmo Desktop 3.0RC1(®). Thirty thematic maps were developed according to the municipalities, years, parasite eti

All-terrain vehicle injuries in Texas, mapping the path to intervention with a geographic information system.

The state of Texas was ranked 10th for all-terrain vehicle-related deaths among all states from 2007-2009. Health Service Region 4/5N of eastern Texas has a statistically significant higher rate of all-terrain vehicle-related injuries in children under the age of 18 than Texas as a whole (p < 0.001.) It is unknown why east Texas has a higher all-terrain vehicle-related injury rate. A retrospective analysis of the registry of the Texas Trauma Service Area G, which serves the east Texas area, from the years 2004-2010 was performed. Variations within the region were assessed using a geographic in

Geographic inequalities in health intervention coverage - mapping the composite coverage index in Peru using geospatial modelling.

BACKGROUND: The composite coverage index (CCI) provides an integrated perspective towards universal health coverage in the context of reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health. Given the sample design of most household surveys does not provide coverage estimates below the first administrative level, approaches for achieving more granular estimates are needed. We used a model-based geostatistical approach to estimate the CCI at multiple resolutions in Peru. METHODS: We generated estimates for the eight indicators on which the CCI is based for the departments, provinces, and areas of 5 ×

Geographical distribution of scrub typhus and risk of Orientia tsutsugamushi infection in Indonesia: Evidence mapping.

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus is a potentially fatal acute febrile illness caused by bacteria in the genus Orientia. Though cases have been documented, a comprehensive body of evidence has not previously been compiled to give an overview of scrub typhus in Indonesia. This study aimed to address this key knowledge gap by mapping and ranking geographic areas based on existing data on the presence or absence of the pathogen in humans, vectors, and host animals. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We performed searches on local and international electronic databases, websites, libraries, and collections i

Validation of a geographic information system model for mapping the risk of fasciolosis in cattle and buffaloes in Cambodia.

Maps showing gradations of risk of fasciolosis due to Fasciola gigantica in Cambodia were produced using geographic information systems (GIS) technology in conjunction with determinants of fasciolosis. A comparison between levels of risk predicted by the maps and field measurements of prevalence in 11 provinces (n=1406) showed general agreement, which suggested the epidemiological determinants and weightings used to produce the maps were appropriate. However, due to logistical constraints, prevalence was measured at the provincial level and animals were not randomly sampled (and thus were unli

Measuring community integration using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and participatory mapping for people who were once homeless.

Measures of community integration rely on self-report assessments that often quantify physical or social participation, but fail to capture the individual׳s spatial presence in the community. The current study documents the activity space, or area of daily experiences, of 37 individuals who were once homeless through participatory mapping and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Contrary to expectations, there was no significant relationship between activity space size and community integration measures, except a negative association with physical integration. Further analysis revealed, howev

Geographical mapping and seroprevalence of Burkholderia pseudomallei amongst livestock species in Lao People's Democratic Republic.

The Gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei causes a severe infectious disease known as melioidosis in humans and animals. It is considered endemic in tropical countries, including Thailand, Lao PDR (Laos), and Northern Australia. B. pseudomallei is a saprophyte found in contaminated soil and surface water. Humans and animals can become infected via direct exposure to contaminated water or soil and inhalation of dust or water droplets. Despite the high morbidity and mortality rates of melioidosis, there is a lack of knowledge of its geographical distribution and seroprevalence, even

Enhancing water access monitoring through mapping multi-source usage and disaggregated geographic inequalities with machine learning and surveys.

Monitoring safe water access in developing countries relies primarily on household health survey and census data. These surveys are often incomplete: they tend to focus on the primary water source only, are spatially coarse, and usually happen every 5-10 years, during which significant changes can happen in urbanisation and infrastructure provision, especially in sub Saharan Africa. In this work, we present a data-driven approach that utilises and compliments survey based data of water access, to provide context-specific and disaggregated monitoring. The level of access to improved water and s

A Geographic Information System Approach to Map Tick Exposure Risk at a Scale for Public Health Intervention.

Tick-borne disease control and prevention have been largely ineffective compared to the control of other vector-borne diseases. Although control strategies exist, they are costly or ineffective at large spatial scales. We need tools to target these strategies to places of highest tick exposure risk. Here we present a geographic information system (GIS) method for mapping predicted tick exposure risk at a 200 m by 200 m resolution, appropriate for public health intervention. We followed the approach used to map tick habitat suitability over large areas. We used drag-cloth sampling to measure th

Mapping alluvial mine dynamics in the Atewa landscape in Ghana using Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) and GIS.

The Atewa Range Forest Reserve (ARFR) in Ghana, a key biodiversity hotspot, is increasingly impacted by alluvial gold mining, which has been expanding in the region. However, limited research has focused on mining activities within the forest reserve or their proximity to river bodies. This study used high-resolution PlanetScope satellite imagery (2018-2023) and Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) to monitor mining activities and land use changes in the Atewa landscape. Post-classification change detection was used to determine land use land cover (LULC) classes that transitioned t

A validation of the Malaria Atlas Project maps and development of a new map of malaria transmission in Sokoto, Nigeria: a cross-sectional study using geographic information systems.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children in Africa. There is inadequate information regarding malaria transmission-intensity in some of the worst-affected parts of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) was developed in 2006, to project estimates of malaria transmission intensity where this data is not available, based on the vector behaviour for malaria. Data from malariometric studies globally were obtained and modelled to provide prevalence estimates. The sensitivity of these maps, however, reduces with unavailability of data. Th

Diagnostic delay in patients from the International Map of Axial Spondyloarthritis: geographic, sociodemographic and disease-related factors.

OBJECTIVES: To assess diagnostic delay and its associated factors globally, in a large sample of patients included in the International Map of Axial Spondyloarthritis (IMAS). METHODS: IMAS is a cross-sectional online survey (2017-22) of 5557 axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) patients from 27 countries. Diagnostic delay was calculated as the difference between age at diagnosis and age at first symptom onset reported by patients. Associations between diagnostic delay and regions, sociodemographic characteristics and disease-related factors were explored through univariable and multivariable linea

Mapping the geographical distribution of the mucosa-associated gut microbiome in GI-symptomatic children with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by cognitive, behavioral, and communication impairments. In the past few years, it has been proposed that alterations in the gut microbiota may contribute to an aberrant communication between the gut and brain in children with ASD. Consistent with this notion, several studies have demonstrated that children with ASD have an altered fecal microbiota compared with typically developing (TD) children. However, it is unclear where along the length of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract these alterations in microbial communiti

Ecological study and risk mapping of leishmaniasis in an endemic area of Brazil based on a geographical information systems approach.

Visceral leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease highly influenced by eco-epidemiological factors. Geographical information systems (GIS) have proved to be a suitable approach for the analysis of environmental components that affect the spatial distribution of diseases. Exploiting this methodology, a model was developed for the mapping of the distribution and incidence of canine leishmaniasis in an endemic area of Brazil. Local variations were observed with respect to infection incidence and distribution of serological titers, i.e. high titers were noted close to areas with preserved vegetatio

[Identification of geographical origins of Cordyceps based on data of amino acids with self-organizing map neural network].

In this study, data of amino acids of Cordyceps samples from Qinghai and Tibet was analyzed with self-organizing map neural network. A model of XY-Fused network was established with the content of 8 major amino acids and total amino acids for the identification of geographical origins of Cordyceps from Qinghai and Tibet. It had the prediction accuracy of 83.3% for the test set. In addition, data mining indicated that methionine was a special kind of amino acid in Cordyceps which could serve as a marker to identify its geographical origins. On this basis, the content ratio of methionine to tota

Mapping the burden of cholera in sub-Saharan Africa and implications for control: an analysis of data across geographical scales.

BACKGROUND: Cholera remains a persistent health problem in sub-Saharan Africa and worldwide. Cholera can be controlled through appropriate water and sanitation, or by oral cholera vaccination, which provides transient (∼3 years) protection, although vaccine supplies remain scarce. We aimed to map cholera burden in sub-Saharan Africa and assess how geographical targeting could lead to more efficient interventions. METHODS: We combined information on cholera incidence in sub-Saharan Africa (excluding Djibouti and Eritrea) from 2010 to 2016 from datasets from WHO, Médecins Sans Frontières, ProME

Epidemiology and individual, household and geographical risk factors of podoconiosis in Ethiopia: results from the first nationwide mapping.

Although podoconiosis is one of the major causes of tropical lymphoedema and is endemic in Ethiopia its epidemiology and risk factors are poorly understood. Individual-level data for 129,959 individuals from 1,315 communities in 659 woreda (districts) were collected for a nationwide integrated survey of lymphatic filariasis and podoconiosis. Blood samples were tested for circulating Wuchereria bancrofti antigen using immunochromatographic card tests. A clinical algorithm was used to reach a diagnosis of podoconiosis by excluding other potential causes of lymphoedema of the lower limb. Bayesian
