Hidden populations: risk behaviours in drug-using populations in the Republic of Georgia through subsequent peer-driven interventions.

BACKGROUND: Georgia has a significant risk of ongoing HIV and HCV outbreak. Within this context, harm reduction aims to reduce risk associated with drug use through community activities, such as peer recruitment and involvement. The aim of this study was to identify significant differences between known and hidden populations, and attest to the ongoing utility of peer-driven intervention across multiple years in recruiting high-risk, vulnerable populations through peer networks. It was hypothesised that significant differences would remain between known, and previously unknown, members of the

Barriers to mental health care utilization among internally displaced persons in the republic of Georgia: a rapid appraisal study.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of evidence on access to services for mental health and psychosocial support for conflict-affected populations in low- and middle-income countries. In the Republic of Georgia, rates of utilization of mental health services among internally displaced people with mental disorders are low. We set out to identify the health system barriers leading to this treatment gap. METHODS: We used rapid appraisal methods (collection and triangulation of multiple data sources) to investigate barriers to accessing mental health care services among adult IDPs in Georgia. Data col

Inherited thrombophilia in republic of Georgia women with or without a personal and/or family history of thrombosis and unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss.

OBJECTIVE: Inherited thrombophilia is a recognized, albeit globally debated, risk factor for recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). This study investigates the prevalence of inherited thrombophilia gene variants in Georgian women with unexplained RPL, comparing those with and without a personal or family history of thrombosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort of 191 Georgian women with unexplained RPL (≥2 miscarriages) was divided into Group I (n = 130, with personal/family history of thrombosis) and Group II (n = 61, without history). A control group (n = 72) of women with ≥2 live births and no hist

Health system-related barriers and facilitators to tuberculosis preventive treatment: a qualitative case study comparing implementation in the Republic of Moldova and Georgia.

INTRODUCTION: Despite WHO's recommendations and the 2023-2030 Tuberculosis (TB) action plan, uptake of TB preventive treatment (TPT) remains suboptimal. In this paper, we use two countries of the WHO Europe Region, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia, that are at different stages of implementation of TB prevention policies, as a case study to examine health system barriers and facilitators to TPT scale-up. METHODS: In this case study, we used methods of qualitative research-interviews with three stakeholder groups: health service providers and National TB Programme staff; civil society organi

Reduction in Blood Lead Concentration in Children across the Republic of Georgia following Interventions to Address Widespread Exceedance of Reference Value in 2019.

In recent years, reports of lead contamination have dramatically increased in Georgia. Given concerns about the exposure of children to lead (Pb), the National Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS-2018) included a blood sampling component. The results showed that 41% of the children that participated had blood Pb levels (BLL) ≥ 5 µg/dL and that BLL in children living in Western Georgia were higher than those in Eastern regions. In response to these findings, NCDC implemented written and verbal advice to the families of children who participated in the MICS-2018 on how to reduce Pb exposure.

Cost-effectiveness of modified fully oral 9-month treatment regimens for rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis in Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan and the Republic of Moldova.

INTRODUCTION: Prior to 2020, treatment options for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) were limited and typically involved long treatment durations and high financial burdens. In the eastern European and central Asian (EECA) region, traditional inpatient tuberculosis (TB) care models, alongside high MDR-TB rates, escalate nosocomial transmission risks and treatment costs. Modified, fully oral, shorter treatment regimens (mSTR) implemented in the WHO European Region under operational research conditions offered a potential reduction in the burden of MDR-TB treatment for both patients and

Implementation of effective, self-sustaining headache services in the Republic of Georgia: Evaluation of their impact on headache-related disability and quality of life of people with headache.

Background Headache disorders are widespread and disabling. They are common in Georgia, especially headache on ≥15 days/month (HA ≥ 15), but there are no headache services. Objective We established headache services meeting local needs, investigating feasibility, consumer uptake and satisfaction, and cost, with an exit strategy bequeathing effective, self-sustaining services that could be rolled out nationwide. Methods We created headache centres in Tbilisi and Gori offering free expert care for three visits over three months, and affordable medication thereafter. The primary outcome measure w

Health and economic impact of hepatitis B vaccination in the national immunization program in Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan-a modelling study.

Hepatitis B (HBV) remains a major public health concern in the WHO European Region, causing approximately 32,000 deaths annually as of 2022. Fortunately, HBV vaccination is highly effective in preventing infection. The WHO Regional Office for Europe established criteria for countries to be validated in reaching interim targets for HBV control through immunization, advancing toward the goal of hepatitis elimination. Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan conducted national HBV serosurveys, which revealed a significant reduction in chronic HBV prevalence among indivi

Identification of pathogenic Vibrio species by multilocus PCR-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and its application to aquatic environments of the former soviet republic of Georgia.

The Ibis T5000 is a novel diagnostic platform that couples PCR and mass spectrometry. In this study, we developed an assay that can identify all known pathogenic Vibrio species and field-tested it using natural water samples from both freshwater lakes and the Georgian coastal zone of the Black Sea. Of the 278 total water samples screened, 9 different Vibrio species were detected, 114 (41%) samples were positive for V. cholerae, and 5 (0.8%) samples were positive for the cholera toxin A gene (ctxA). All ctxA-positive samples were from two freshwater lakes, and no ctxA-positive samples from any

Iterative Co-Development of the Tripartite Joint Risk Assessment Operational Process and Tool Through Incorporating Information From Pilots in Indonesia, the United Republic of Tanzania, and Georgia.

INTRODUCTION: Zoonotic diseases pose risks to human, animal, and ecosystem health; effective management relies on coordinated actions across sectors. Although One Health principles promote collaboration across sectors, operational tools for multisectoral risk assessment (RA) are lacking. Therefore, the Tripartite (FAO, WHO, and WOAH) developed the first-ever One Health operational tool for Joint Risk Assessment (JRA-OT), with inputs from 15 pilot countries and international experts. This article describes how information from pilots in Indonesia, the United Republic of Tanzania, and Georgia co

"How can you kiss and touch this child and show affection towards her? What kind of woman are you?": Provider perspectives on stigma towards native and ethnic minority street-connected youth in the Republic of Georgia.

The Republic of Georgia has experienced a rapid growth in the number of youth working and/or living on the street (YWLS). Although research indicates that YWLS are highly stigmatized, few studies have examined perceptions of stigma among Georgian social service providers who serve YWLS. We conducted in-person in-depth interviews with key informants recruited from governmental institutions and social service organizations in Tbilisi and Rustavi, two large urban areas. A semi-structured interview guide was used to explore provider perspectives on the social contexts surrounding the delivery of s

Secrecy and risk among MSM in Tbilisi, Georgia.

There is concern that the tremendous economic, social, and political upheavals that the Republic of Georgia has undergone in the years since the fall of the Soviet Union may have created an environment fertile for HIV transmission. Notably absent from official statistics and HIV-related research in Georgia is discussion of men who have sex with men (MSM) and, therefore, little is known about the MSM population or its potential to acquire or transmit HIV. Data were collected from 30 MSM recruited through a testing and counseling center in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Two focus groups with s
