Pasuchaca (Geranium dielsiaum Knuth): A New Source of Astilbin with Antiglycation Activity.

Pasuchaca (Geranium dielsianum Knuth), a traditional Peruvian medicinal plant from the Geraniaceae family used for diabetes management, was investigated for its antiglycative properties. This study aimed to screen, isolate, and identify the active antiglycative compounds from its aerial parts. By coupling a methylglyoxal (MGO)-HPLC screening assay with high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC), seven dihydroflavonol derivatives were separated and identified from the 80% methanol extract. The compounds were identified as 2,3-dihydromyricetin 3-O-α-rhamnopyranoside (1), (+)-taxifolin 3-O

[Morphological and histological studies of the Chinese drug lao-guan-cao].

Lao-guan-cao has long been used in Chinese traditional medicine. It is used as an antirheumatic and circulation promoting drug for the treatment of acute and chronic rheumatalgia; also used as a detoxicant for enteritis and bacillary dysentery. The dried aerial parts of Erodium stephanianum Willd. and Geranium wilfordii Maxim. (family Geraniaceae) have been specified in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (1990 ed.) According to the literature and the authors' market investigations, the commercial drug Lao-guan-cao chiefly consists of the aerial parts of Erodium stephanianum Willd. Also those rather pop

Automated Detection and Classification of Pollen Grains Using YOLO-Based Deep Learning Models.

Authentication of high-value honey, particularly from the biodiverse Anzer Valley, relies on melissopalynology to verify botanical origin. However, traditional manual analysis is time-consuming and subject to observer bias. This study developed an automated system for the simultaneous detection and classification of 53 pollen grains belonging to ecologically and apiculturally important taxa distributed in Anzer Valley using advanced deep learning architectures. A novel dataset was constructed from approximately 2095 light microscopy images of the pollen grains, enhanced to 19,860 images via ge

Snake venom poisoning in Southern California.

The annual incidence of rattlesnake bite in Southern California is approximately 1 per 75,000 population. The case fatality rate is 1.5 per cent. The snakes implicated in the greatest number of injuries are the southern Pacific rattlesnake, the red diamond rattlesnake and the sidewinder. Rattlesnake venom produces deleterious changes in the blood cells, defects in blood coagulation, injury to the intimal linings of vessels, damage to the heart muscle, alterations in the respiratory cycle and, to a lesser extent, changes in neuromuscular conduction. The most frequently observed symptoms and sig

Toxicity of β-citronellol, geraniol and linalool from Pelargonium roseum essential oil against the West Nile and filariasis vector Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae).

Insect vectors are responsible for spreading devastating parasites and pathogens. A large number of botanicals have been suggested for eco-friendly control programs against mosquito vectors, and some of them are aromatic plants. Pelargonium roseum, a species belonging to the Geraniaceae family, due to its pleasant rose-like odor may represent a suitable candidate as mosquito repellent and/or larvicide. In this research, we evaluated the toxicity of the essential oil from P. roseum and its major constituents against the West Nile and filariasis vector Culex pipiens. The chemical composition of

Sequelae of encephalitis; report of a study after the California epidemic.

In a study of almost 500 patients to determine residual effects, the sequelae of both St. Louis and Western equine encephalitis were more prominent in the younger age group. Infants under three months with Western equine encephalitis had the greatest central nervous system damage. Forty-four per cent of this entire group had sequelae. In patients between one and four years of age, the incidence of sequelae was less. The Western equine infection was associated with the more disabling residual damage. Postencephalitic convulsions were fairly common in the younger patients with Western equine dis

Rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease; incidence in California.

The statistics quoted in this and other published reports appear to substantiate the impression that rheumatic fever in California, although still an important public health problem which varies widely from one locality to another, is of lower incidence and perhaps of more benign character than in most other parts of the United States. It also appears that in California aortic insufficiency may be of higher relative incidence and occurs more frequently as a clinically diagnosable sequel of rheumatic fever than does classical mitral stenosis. Congenital defects of the heart constitute a large p

The 1952 outbreak of encephalitis in California; epidemiologic aspects.

For the most part, epidemiologic phenomena observed in the outbreak of encephalitis in 1952 accorded with patterns that had been apparent in previous years. Ninety-seven per cent of the 414 laboratory-confirmed cases of western equine and St. Louis encephalitis in humans occurred in the 20 Central Valley counties. The cases of western equine encephalomyelitis in horses were generally scattered over the state. In the Central Valley most of the cases in horses were in animals less than two years of age; elsewhere the incidence was higher in older horses. There were no laboratory-confirmed cases o
