Interprofessional collaboration is critical to optimizing care for older adults, yet comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) remains challenging in community and primary care settings lacking team-based infrastructure. Given their accessibility and longitudinal patient relationships, pharmacists are well positioned to support CGA beyond medication review. This pilot project used a modified Delphi process to identify practical, evidence-based tools pharmacists could use to assess CGA domains including functional ability, mobility, cognition, and social support. A multidisciplinary panel, inclu

BACKGROUND: Due to the aging society, the incidence of age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is strongly increasing. Hearing loss has a high impact on various aspects of life and may lead to social isolation, depression, loss of gain control, frailty and even mental decline. Comorbidity of cognitive and sensory impairment is not rare. This might have an impact on diagnostics and treatment in the geriatric setting.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of hearing impairment on geriatric assessment and cognitive testing routinely done in geriatrics.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This re

Changing global demography is resulting in older people presenting to emergency departments (EDs) in greater numbers than ever before. They present with greater urgency and are more likely to be admitted to hospital or re-attend and utilize greater resources. They experience longer waits for care and are less likely to be satisfied with their experiences. Not only that, but older people suffer poorer health outcomes after ED attendance, with higher mortality rates and greater dependence in activities of daily living or rates of admission to nursing homes. Older people's assessment and manageme

Sleep disturbances afflict more than 50% of adults age 65 and older. Sleep apnea and periodic limb movements of sleep are the primary sleep disorders in the elderly. Patient assessment tools, a thorough physical examination, and appropriate tests can simplify the diagnostic process; sleep center referral is not always warranted. Ultimately, accurate sleep disorder diagnoses can result in decreased geriatric morbidity and mortality, and increased patient quality of life.

Assessing patients' cognitive function requires astute observational skills and a willingness to put aside stereotypes about aging. History taking is an essential aspect of this process and requires nurses to gather information from patients, family members, and significant others. Nurses must assess and distinguish age-related changes from those precipitated by cognitive and mood disorders. In addition, they must be familiar with presenting symptoms of organic disorders such as dementias, and mood disorders such as depression in order to assess older adults for cognitive impairment and collab

The Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) and the corresponding geriatric interventions are beneficial for community-dwelling older persons in terms of reduced mortality, disability, institutionalisation and healthcare utilisation. However, the value of CGA in the management of older cancer patients both in terms of clinical outcomes and in cost-effectiveness remains to be fully established, and CGA is still far from being routinely implemented in geriatric oncology. This narrative review aims to analyse the available evidence on the cost-effectiveness of CGA adopted in geriatric oncology,

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The incidence of myeloma in older adults is increasing, yet little is known about geriatric impairments in these patients. We aimed to examine the prevalence of geriatric impairments in older adults with myeloma and the association between geriatric assessment and autologous stem cell transplant eligibility.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
SETTING: Two academic medical centers.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 40 adults 65 years and older with newly diagnosed myeloma were enrolled.
MEASUREMENT: Participants completed a primarily self-administered geriatric assessment, incl

AIM: We have recently developed and validated a screening test for comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) named "Dr. SUPERMAN". We compared the results obtained by the CGA of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), vascular dementia (VaD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and determined the relationship between functional deficits and clinical characteristics in each type of dementia.
METHODS: We used Dr. SUPERMAN to examine patients with AD (24 men and 53 women, mean age 83.0 ± 5.1 years), VaD (10 men and 12 women, mean age 80.4 ± 5.0 years) and DLB (28 men and 20 women, mean age 81.2 ±

The aim of the study is to evaluate the advantage of including audiological testing in the system of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) of patients. The results of a survey of 988 elderly and senile people (average age 77±7,4 years) are presented, each of whom underwent a CGA and hearing assessment by filling out a questionnaire Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly, Screening version (HHIE-S). All patients were divided into two groups: the first group included 780 inpatient patients undergoing medical and social rehabilitation in different departments of the Saint-Petersburg City G

Treatment of elderly patients with breast cancer is limited by the lack of evidence-based medicine due to exclusion of elderly persons from clinical studies and the difficulty of decision-making in an elderly population comprising subjects with heterogeneous health backgrounds. Individual variation of health conditions is larger in elderly patients than in young people. Since the risk-benefit balance of treatment depends on the health background, judgment of the vulnerability of individual patients is required in treatment planning. The comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is a tool for ac

Older individuals are at risk for adverse events in all settings where cancer is treated. Common geriatric syndromes can complicate cancer therapy, and thus, increase patient morbidity and the costs of care. Furthermore, cancer treatment can worsen geriatric syndromes. It is often difficult to determine whether declining health is a result of cancer treatment or the patient's underlying disease. Baseline assessment of multiple factors may facilitate detection of a decline in the patient's health status, which may be remediable. Geriatric syndromes may substantially affect quality of life and a

The average life expectancy of the Bangladeshi population has risen over the last decade due to economic growth and improved medical care. Although the increased number of older adults and their health is a significant concern, there is scarce of data regarding that. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted to analyze the association between nutritional status and functional ability among selected Bangladeshi geriatric populations living in their homes. Of 400 participants, the prevalence of malnutrition, and people at risk of malnutrition was 25.4% and 58.8%, respectively. Furthe

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: More than half of institutionalized older people need a emergency department visit annually, with high resources consumption and higher risk of adverse events, due to high complexity. Direct admission to Acute Geriatric Unit (AGU), after geriatric consultant and nursing home medical team assessment, could be a safety and effective alternative to emergency department (ED) admission.
METHODS: Retrospective observational study of AGU patients admitted by Nursing Home Geriatric Team between January, 1st and December, 31st, 2021. Planned admissions and SARS-CoV-2 positive

Sufficient and refreshing sleep is important for good health, physical and cognitive functioning as well as quality of life. An assessment of sleep quality and sleep disorders is therefore mandatory in geriatric patients. Despite a variety of clinical assessment tools for screening and diagnosing sleep disorders, only some of them have been validated in older subjects and nearly none in geriatric patients or in individuals with dementia. Therefore, the aim of this review is to present a concise overview of assessment tools for sleep disorders that are widely used in sleep medicine and to brief

Frailty is increasingly recognized as a major determinant of perioperative risk in the geriatric population. It is characterized by reduced physiological reserve and impaired stress tolerance and arises from multisystem dysregulation involving chronic inflammation, neuroendocrine changes, sarcopenia, and organ dysfunction. Unlike chronological aging, frailty reflects biological vulnerability independent of comorbidity or disability and is strongly associated with postoperative complications, prolonged hospitalization, cognitive decline, and mortality. Therefore, early and systematic frailty as

INTRODUCTION: Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) prior to transcatheter aortic valve replacement implantation (TAVI) for severe aortic stenosis (AS) may improve the selection of patients targeted for this strategy. Despite the fact that CGA includes multiple scales, comparative data among them are limited. Our aim was to evaluate the discriminative capacity of different scales used in CGA on the decision of suitability for TAVI implantation and the influence on prognosis after TAVI implantation.
METHODS: Single-center prospective observational study including consecutive patients with s

BACKGROUND: Older patients more often suffer perioperative complications than younger people. Especially geriatric patients who require emergency treatment represent a high-risk group. Therefore, perioperative risk assessment supports the treatment team in identifying patients at risk and in defining the treatment plan accordingly.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A thorough medical history and clinical examination are pivotal elements of any risk stratification. The organ-specific risk assessment is primarily used to plan the surgical and anesthesiological procedures.
RESULTS: For a comprehensive ris

There is evidence that some elderly patients with chronic schizophrenia experience marked impairments in cognitive functioning. Assessment of these patients may be difficult with traditional neuropsychological measures. The purpose of the present study was to determine if cognitive functioning could be validly assessed with the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Late Version Cognitive factor score (ADAS-L Cog) in patients whose scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) reflect profound cognitive impairment. Patients with MMSE scores from 0 to 10 were selected from a larger database.
