Geriatric Focused ERAS Nursing Practices in Open and Hybrid Aortic Vascular Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways have been adapted for open and lower extremity vascular surgery and increasingly guide perioperative care for older adults. However, little is known about how perioperative nurses implement ERAS-consistent and geriatric-focused practices for older patients undergoing open and hybrid aortic procedures, particularly in hybrid operating room settings and in Chinese hospitals, where pathway maturity and geriatric integration may vary across centres. PURPOSE: To describe perioperative nurses' implementation of ERAS-consistent and geriatri

Nursing home geriatric rehabilitation care and interprofessional collaboration; a practice-based study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty and multimorbidity are common among patients in geriatric rehabilitation care (GRC). Proper care of these patients involves multiple professionals which requires optimal interprofessional collaboration to provide the best possible support. Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) goes beyond multi-professional collaboration. It requires professionals to think beyond the expertise of their own discipline and work on joint outcomes in which the patient is actively involved. This study describes the development of the GRC teams of an elderly care organization towards the IPC. ME

[Impact of geriatric teleconsultations on hospitalization of elderly living in nursing homes].

The clinical situation and complexity of the medical care of elderly living in nursing homes accounts for a high risk of hospitalization. Geriatric teleconsultations would be one of the solutions proposed to prevent unplanned hospitalizations. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of geriatric teleconsultations on hospitalizations of elderly living in nursing homes. This is a descriptive, retrospective, single-center study of elderly people living in 11 nursing homes in North-West Vendée who received a geriatric teleconsultation and whom the general practitioner would have hospitalized in t

[Geriatric oncology patients at the center of nurse-led delirium management].

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium is an acute, fluctuating neurocognitive syndrome. It is among the most common perioperative complications in older patients and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, a prolonged length of stay, complications, and persistent cognitive impairment. After major head and neck procedures, the risk is particularly high; risk factors often accumulate, including advanced age, pre-existing cognitive impairment, high American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) status, polypharmacy, malnutrition, and prolonged operative time. No established pharmacologica

Digitalization of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments for Nursing Practice: A Feasibility and Proof-of-Concept Study Toward Nursing Home Implementation.

Background/Objectives: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is essential for maintaining quality of life (QOL) and independence in older adults. Still, its implementation is labor-intensive and difficult to sustain in aging societies such as Japan. Digital technologies may enable continuous, scalable CGA in daily living environments. This study aimed to develop and preliminarily evaluate a digital CGA (D-CGA) framework by integrating data from multiple monitoring devices, as a preparatory step toward Artificial Intelligence (AI)-supported personalized care planning. Methods: Four devices (

[Preventive measures for the prophylaxis of contractures in geriatric nursing. A systematic review].

Contractures constitute a health problem in mobility-restricted geriatric patients. Contractures are clinically important due to their impact on functional outcome. Prophylactic interventions seem to be indispensable. We performed a systematic review studying the interventions used to prevent immobility-related contractures in the geriatric long-term care. The efficacy and safety of preventive methods was assessed. Electronic literature searches covered the databases PubMed, PEDro, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library (May 2010). Eligibility criteria for studies were: Investigation of an interventi

Enhancing geriatric perioperative care competencies through structured, geriatric-focused clinical rounds for operating room nursing students: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: The growing number of older adults undergoing surgery highlights the need for strengthened geriatric competencies among operating room (OR) nursing students. Despite this demand, geriatric-focused perioperative training remains limited in OR curricula. This study examined the effectiveness of structured, geriatric-focused clinical rounds in enhancing OR nursing students' theoretical knowledge and self-reported clinical performance in perioperative care for older adults. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted among 64 OR nursing students allocated by clinical rotation sc

Intensive hemodialysis in the (nursing) home: the bright side of geriatric ESRD care?

Elderly ESRD patients often lose functionality when they start dialysis, which may be due to a variety of clinical problems. We recently postulated that intensive (longer and/or more frequent) hemodialysis (HD) may be the ideal strategy to try to prevent these ESRD- and dialysis-related complications, including dialysis-induced hypotension, cardiac and cerebral events, malnutrition, infections, sleep problems, and psychological issues. The feasibility of home dialysis therapies has been demonstrated in observational studies. As self-care dialysis is often a challenge in the elderly patient, as
