BACKGROUND: While collecting may be a normal behaviour, hoarding is a symptom of various psychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). Although anecdotal reports suggest that hoarding is not uncommon in geriatric psychiatry populations, its psychopathological correlates in such samples have not been well characterised.
METHODS: The presence of clinically significant hoarding symptoms was screened for in 100 consecutive patients in a geriatric psychiatry inpatient unit. Both patient and collateral histories were obtai

Trichotillomania is a relatively understudied psychiatric disorder. Even less is known about this disorder in the elderly. We describe an unusual case of an elderly woman presenting for the first time with trichotillomania at age 70 and highlight the treatment complexities we encountered.

The author summarizes the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry Senior Investigator Award presentation delivered at the 13th Annual Meeting March 12-15, 2000, in Miami Beach, Florida, and reviews his research studies that define a trajectory leading to investigations of early detection and prevention of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Themes and critical transitions that fostered the research are emphasized, and effective collaboration, mentoring, and timing are discussed. These studies have combined neuroimaging and genetic methods to identify subjects before they develop AD, so that interv

Computed tomography of the head (HCT) was studied prospectively in 42 new geriatric psychiatry patients. Scans were obtained in 88% of the sample. Subjects underwent a complete evaluation by a geriatric psychiatrist who was blind to the HCT results. The HCT was abnormal in 32 (86%) of the 37 patients who had a scan. The most frequent finding was atrophic changes, which were discovered in ten (27%) of the 37 patients. Subcortical vascular disease was found in 14 patients (38%). Mixed pictures with both vascular disease and atrophic changes were found in nine (24%). The only statistically signif

On 1.1.1988 three community psychiatric teams were established in the gerontopsychiatric fields under the Copenhagen County Hospital, Nordvang. The objects were to supervise and treat patients over the age of 65 in their own homes or in nursing homes. This article is an account of the functions of two teams concerning patients living in their own homes during the period 1st January to 31st December 1988. A total of 125 patients were referred and 31 were admitted, five of these because of lack of nursing home beds. Women and persons living alone were most frequently involved. On the initiative

Academic psychiatry : the journal of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training and the Association for Academic Psychiatry2026eng
OBJECTIVE: To explore psychiatry residents' experiences, challenges, and perceived educational gaps in managing polypharmacy among older adults within a large academic hospital setting.
METHODS: Using a qualitative descriptive approach, we synthesized recurring themes and insights emerging from longitudinal clinical reflections, supervision discussions, and interdisciplinary educational forums conducted over a 12-month academic year, including monthly group supervision sessions and weekly faculty supervision during routine clinical rotations. Additional perspectives were informed by interdisc

Visual hallucinations are associated with a variety of psychiatric, medical, neurologic, and ophthalmologic disorders. One hundred forty outpatients presenting to a geriatric psychiatric clinic were screened for visual hallucinations and assessed on a number of descriptive variables, medical history, ophthalmologic history, psychiatric diagnosis, and cognitive score. The data revealed that 14 patients (10%) experienced visual hallucinations. Presence of visual hallucinations was significantly associated with diagnoses of dementia or delirium, living in a nursing home, lower cognitive score, an

BACKGROUND: This study aims to describe the prevalence of catatonia in a population of older acute psychiatric inpatients according to different diagnostic criteria. Secondary objectives are: to compare the catatonic symptom profile, prevalence, and severity, in respect to the underlying aetiology, and to evaluate the association between catatonic and somatic comorbidity.
METHODS: The study included 106 patients admitted to an acute geriatric psychiatry ward. Catatonia was assessed using the Bush Francis Catatonia Rating Scale (BFCRS).
RESULTS: Catatonia was highly prevalent (n=42; 39.6%), e

We report on seven geropsychiatric patients, aged 62 to 86, who had received either in- or outpatient psychiatric treatment for different disorders before being diagnosed with Huntington's disease (HD) by molecular biological methods. At the time of diagnosis, these patients presented only with mild involuntary movements in addition to other, nonspecific psychiatric symptoms such as depressive, paranoid, or dementia symptoms. In six of the seven cases, the HD symptoms had previously been misdiagnosed as tardive dyskinesia because these patients had been treated with neuroleptics in the past. F

The development and suitability testing of quality indicators for geriatric psychiatry. The indicators were developed by a group of experts and evaluated in terms of significance, scientific validity and practicability (according to QUALIFY). After a field test, qualitative interviews were conducted with the evaluators. All 24 indicators originally developed were classified as significant, 18 of them as scientific. Of these, 9 (by experts) and 8 (by evaluators) were rated as practicable. Indicators on delirium prevention, age-specific groups and liberty-depriving measures were rated as non-scien

OBJECTIVE: Exact information on drug use is important information at admittance to hospital departments. The aim of this study was to validate the information given in the referral regarding benzodiazepine use by analysis of serum samples.
METHODS: A total of 241 patients were included at admittance to a geriatric psychiatry department. Information on use of benzodiazepines according to the referral was recorded, and serum samples were analysed for benzodiazepine drugs. The number of patients with incorrect information in the referral was calculated for each benzodiazepine.
RESULTS: Informat

Neurofilament light chain (NFL) is a structural axonal protein released into extracellular fluids following neuroaxonal injury. Blood-based NfL measurement has emerged as a marker of neurodegeneration, but its relevance in geriatric psychiatry remains insufficiently defined. We conducted a narrative review of peer-reviewed studies reporting serum or plasma NfL concentrations in older adults with neurodegenerative diseases or major psychiatric disorders. In MEDLINE/PubMed, were searched up to 31 October 2025. We synthesised data on normative values and biological determinants, compared NfL leve

Delusional parasitosis is not a common presentation in hospital-based geriatric units. Our aim was to review the presentation of a sudden onset of parasitosis in an older patient who had no prior psychiatric history, and its management. This case report describes an 82-year-old man who presented with delusions of parasitosis for the past three years of his life. The report includes a longitudinal description of the patient's symptoms, signs, and manifestations during his stay at an inpatient senior mental health service center, emergency department (ED) visits, and medical floor stay along wit

OBJECTIVES: The association between the presence of pain and mental disorder is well known. The extent of pain treatment in psychiatric patients is estimated to be high, but there is a lack of recent studies focusing on analgesic treatment in patients with mental disorders. The use of analgesics can be associated with side effects, and it is possible that analgesics are not the correct treatment for chronic pain among patients with mental disorders.
METHODS: Data were obtained among inpatients in a geriatric psychiatry department at Aarhus University Hospital, Risskov, Denmark, between 1 Apri

OBJECTIVES: Geriatric psychiatry became an official psychiatric subspecialty in Canada in 2009. The first board examinations from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) took place in 2013. Geriatric Psychiatry focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of complex mental disorders in late life, a time when the interface between physical and mental health issues often adds a new level of complexity.Little has been written on the history of geriatric psychiatry in Québec and in Canada. A lesser-known aspect is that from the 1970's onwards, the department of psychi

Although hallucinatory experiences may be relatively common among the elderly, isolated, and infirm, their frequency has been the subject of little research. Patient records of admissions to a 12-bed geriatric psychiatry service over three and a half years were reviewed for documented presence of hallucinatory symptoms. Hallucinations were documented in 15 per cent of the cases. Although acute and chronic brain syndromes and schizophrenic disorders were disproportionately represented in the hallucinating sample, affective disorders were also represented. A significant number of persons in this

BACKGROUND: Rashes and blood dyscrasias are disconcerting adverse effects associated with carbamazepine therapy. Rashes are quite common, as are mild blood dyscrasias, such as mild leukopenias. Fortunately, severe rashes and blood dyscrasias are rare. There are few reports on the relationship between carbamazepine-induced rashes and blood dyscrasias, including a prospective study in which rash appeared concomitantly with leukopenia and/or thrombocytopenia in 10 patients, two case reports in which simultaneous rash and agranulocytosis occurred, and two case reports in which rashes served as har

BACKGROUND: About 50% of veterans who receive care from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) are aged ≥ 65 years and many have complex psychiatric care needs. However, there are insufficient geriatric psychiatrists available to provide care to this population. The VHA has sought to optimize access to specialty geriatric mental health services via virtual consultation services.
OBSERVATIONS: The Ask the Expert Geriatric Psychiatry email consultation program was established in June 2021. VHA board-certified geriatric psychiatrists serve as expert consultants and respond to email questions f
