The retrospective analysis determines changes between the deaths caused by illegal drugs in East Germany between 1995 and 2004 with specific regard to the number and manner of deaths, common intoxicants, concomitant drug use, the age and gender of the victims as well as the places of death. The data was collected by the institutes of forensic medicine in the German federal states of Saxony, Thuringia, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg West-Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt and the State Offices of Criminal Investigation of these federal states. In Erfurt, Germany, unfavorable geography and emissions from coal burning lead to very high ambient pollution (up to about 4000 micrograms/m3 SO2 in 1980-89). To assess possible health effects of these exposures, total daily mortality was obtained for this same period. A multivariate model was fitted, including corrections for long-term fluctuations, influenza epidemics, and meterology, before analyzing the effect of pollution. Together, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of Germany and the public reactions to the war in the Gulf form a syndrome that poses anew the question of the specifically German "ability to mourn". On the one hand, the author registers a continuing rejection of the onerous task of facing up to the reality of the past via recollection and mourning. On the other, she sees indications both on the individual and collective level that this rejection is beginning to crumble, thus encouraging the emergence of attitudes that challenge the validity of German "ideals" to an increasing extent.

In two middle-sized towns in the northern part of the German Democratic Republic, a random sample of the population and unselected subjects, respectively, were examined for gallbladder stones (GS) by ultrasound. OBJECTIVE: In this study we examined psychopathology, diagnoses, social adjustment and the course of symptoms over two and a half years in East German refugees who suffered a crisis immediately after migrating to West Berlin just prior to or shortly after the breaching of the Wall in autumn 1989.
