Differential distribution and lateralization of infant gestures and their relation to maternal gestures in the Face-to-Face Still-Face paradigm.

We examined whether there are differences in the lateralization of expressive gestures in infants during normal and stressful interactions with their mothers and the relations between their gestures. Thirty full-term 6-12 month-old infants were videotaped during the Face-to-Face Still-Face paradigm. We coded the occurrence and lateralization of infant self-directed and other-directed gestures and maternal proximal and distal gestures. Infant self-directed gestures increased from the Play to Still-Face episode and decreased from the Still-Face to Reunion episode. Other-directed gestures decreas

Assessing Others' Knowledge Through Their Speech Disfluencies and Gestures.

As part of the multimodal language system, gestures play a vital role for listeners, by capturing attention and providing information. Similarly, disfluencies serve as a cue for the listeners about one's knowledge on a topic. In two studies, the first study with natural and the second study with controlled stimuli, we asked whether the combination of gestures and speech disfluencies would affect how listeners made feeling-of-another's-knowing (FOAK) judgments regarding speakers' knowledge states. In Study 1, we showed participants videos of speakers providing navigational instruction. We manip

Recognizing Hand Gestures With Pressure-Sensor-Based Motion Sensing.

This paper proposes a novel framework to process pressure signals for real-time and robust gesture recognition, which includes an innovative segmentation scheme, a gesture recognition scheme and a pressure-parameter adaptive updating strategy. A prototype system, including a wearable gesture sensing device with four pressure sensors and the corresponding algorithmic framework, is developed to realize real-time gesture-based interaction. With the device worn on the wrist, the user can interact with the computer using 8 predefined gestures. Experimental results show that the delay of gesture rec

Repetition suppression for performed hand gestures revealed by fMRI.

The functional components of the human motor system that are used to retrieve and execute simple intransitive hand gestures were identified with a repetition suppression (RS) paradigm. Participants performed movements with the right hand to text instructions in a rapid event related design with a pseudo-random stimulus order. Brain areas associated with action retrieval were identified by comparing trials where an action was repeated to trials that involved a new action. Performance of a novel action, collapsed across individual actions, resulted in significantly greater activity in a left hem

Maternal Responsiveness to Gestures in Children With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: This study compared gesture use in young children with Down syndrome (DS) and typical development (TD) as well as how mothers respond to child gestures based on child age and diagnosis. METHOD: Twenty-two mother-child dyads with DS and 22 mother-child dyads with TD participated. The child participants were between 22 and 63 months and were matched on chronological age. We coded child gesture use and whether mothers recoded child gestures (i.e., provided a verbal translation) during naturalistic interactions. RESULTS: The children with DS used more gestures than peers with TD. After

First Passaggio Transition Gestures in Classically Trained Female Singers.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this project was to determine the spectral and electroglottograph (EGG) differences exhibited by classically trained female singers when singing through their primo passaggio. The hypotheses were that the singers would exhibit relatively steady EGG levels and minimal changes in speech spectra when singing through their primo passaggio. It also was hypothesized that EGG and spectral measurements at the crest and trough of the vibrato cycles would be similar to each other. STUDY DESIGN: The study is an observational case-control study. METHODS: Singers at

Functional magnetic resonance imaging during pantomiming tool-use gestures.

The purpose of this study was to identify the functional fields activated in relation to gestural movements. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we mapped brain activity in ten right-handed, normal volunteers during activation and control tasks. The activation condition consisted of pantomiming tool-use gestures with either the left hand or right hand, whereas the control condition comprised repetitive, oppositional movements between thumb and index finger. Activated cortical regions were highly lateralized to the left hemisphere during pantomiming of tool use regardless of han

Cortical correlates of gesture processing: clues to the cerebral mechanisms underlying apraxia during the imitation of meaningless gestures.

The clinical test of imitation of meaningless gestures is highly sensitive in revealing limb apraxia after dominant left brain damage. To relate lesion locations in apraxic patients to functional brain activation and to reveal the neuronal network subserving gesture representation, repeated H2(15O)-PET measurements were made in seven healthy subjects during a gesture discrimination task. Observing paired images of either meaningless hand or meaningless finger gestures, subjects had to indicate whether they were identical or different. As a control condition subjects simply had to indicate whet

Is vision necessary for the timely acquisition of language-specific patterns in co-speech gesture and their lack in silent gesture?

Blind adults display language-specificity in their packaging and ordering of events in speech. These differences affect the representation of events in co-speech gesture-gesturing with speech-but not in silent gesture-gesturing without speech. Here we examine when in development blind children begin to show adult-like patterns in co-speech and silent gesture. We studied speech and gestures produced by 30 blind and 30 sighted children learning Turkish, equally divided into 3 age groups: 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 years. The children were asked to describe three-dimensional spatial event scenes (e.g., runni

Knowing how to do it or doing it? A double dissociation between tool-gesture production and tool-gesture knowledge.

Deciding how to manipulate an object to fulfill a goal requires accessing different types of object-related information. How these different types of information are integrated and represented in the brain is still an open question. Here, we focus on examining two types of object-related information-tool-gesture knowledge (i.e., how to manipulate an object), and tool-gesture production (i.e., the actual manipulation of an object). We show a double dissociation between tool-gesture knowledge and tool-gesture production: Patient FP presents problems in pantomiming tool use in the context of a sp

The role of the dorsal stream for gesture production.

Skilled gestures require the integrity of the neural networks involved in storage, retrieval, and execution of motor programs. Premotor cortex and/or parietal cortex lesions frequently produce deficits during performance of gestures, transitive more than intransitive. The dorsal stream links object information with object action, suggesting that mechanical knowledge of tool use is stored focally in the brain. Using event-related fMRI, we explored activity during instructed-delay transitive and intransitive hand gestures. The comparison between planning-preparation and execution of gestures dem

Imitating gesture learning in apraxic patients.

The authors studied a group of patients with ideomotor apraxia (IMA) to verify if these patients had some difficulties in gesture learning task in respect to non-apraxic patients and normal control subjects. The results show that learning difficulties are present in patients with IMA. Apraxic patients are not able to perform the gestures in the testing situation and non in everyday life; this fact would demonstrate that the motor pattern still exists in these patients but is inaccessible unless elicited by a strong stimulation.

Apraxia and aphasia for a visual-gestural language.

Since signed languages utilize visual-gestural channels, their study allows a unique opportunity for insight into the ways language and gesture may be represented in the brain. The separability of apraxia and aphasia for sign language was examined in four deaf signers who had unilateral brain damage, three to the left hemisphere and one to the right hemisphere. These patients were administered various tests for apraxia and a test of pantomime recognition. The patient with damage to the right hemisphere was not apraxic as we would expect. For the patients with damage to the left hemisphere, all

Sex Steroids as Regulators of Gestural Communication.

Gestural communication is ubiquitous throughout the animal kingdom, occurring in species that range from humans to arthropods. Individuals produce gestural signals when their nervous system triggers the production of limb and body movement, which in turn functions to help mediate communication between or among individuals. Like many stereotyped motor patterns, the probability of a gestural display in a given social context can be modulated by sex steroid hormones. Here, we review how steroid hormones mediate the neural mechanisms that underly gestural communication in humans and nonhumans alik

Bimanual Gesture Imitation in Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Unimanual gesture production or imitation has often been studied in Alzheimer's disease (AD) during apraxia testing. In the present study, it was hypothesized that bimanual motor tasks may be a sensitive method to detect impairments of motor cognition in AD due to increased demands on the cognitive system. METHODS: We investigated bimanual, meaningless gesture imitation in 45 AD outpatients, 38 subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 50 normal controls (NC) attending a memory clinic. Participants performed neuropsychological background testing and three tasks:

A discussion of apraxia, aphasia, and gestural language.

It is understood that damage to the left cerebral hemisphere in adulthood may result in syndromes of language disturbances called the aphasias. The study of these syndromes sheds light on normal language processes, the relationship between language behavior and the brain, and how best to treat aphasic individuals. Aphasia, for some, is a central communication disorder affecting all symbolic behavior in all modalities (i.e., speech, writing, and gesture). Difficulty producing symbolic gestures on command is called apraxia. Others view aphasia as a manifestation of a motor-sequencing disorder af

Is personality reflected in the gestures of second language speakers?

Previous studies on gestures and personality suggest an ambiguous picture of the effects of the various personality dimensions on the different types of speech-gestures and adaptors. In foreign language learning an additional variable to take into account is proficiency, which some studies have shown to affect gestures. In this study, we explore how various intrinsic variables, including personality, proficiency, gender and age affect the gestures of 61 Cantonese speakers of English as a second language. Participants were asked to narrate a video cartoon. Their proficiency and the frequency of

Comprehensibility and neural substrate of communicative gestures in severe aphasia.

Communicative gestures can compensate incomprehensibility of oral speech in severe aphasia, but the brain damage that causes aphasia may also have an impact on the production of gestures. We compared the comprehensibility of gestural communication of persons with severe aphasia and non-aphasic persons and used voxel based lesion symptom mapping (VLSM) to determine lesion sites that are responsible for poor gestural expression in aphasia. On group level, persons with aphasia conveyed more information via gestures than controls indicating a compensatory use of gestures in persons with severe aph

Dynamic Monitoring Reveals Motor Task Characteristics in Prehistoric Technical Gestures.

Reconstructing ancient technical gestures associated with simple tool actions is crucial for understanding the co-evolution of the human forelimb and its associated control-related cognitive functions on the one hand, and of the human technological arsenal on the other hand. Although the topic of gesture is an old one in Paleolithic archaeology and in anthropology in general, very few studies have taken advantage of the new technologies from the science of kinematics in order to improve replicative experimental protocols. Recent work in paleoanthropology has shown the potential of monitored re
