MicroRNA156-SPL13B Module Induces Parthenocarpy Through the Gibberellin Pathway.

Fruit development typically follows pollination and fertilisation. However, parthenocarpy, the formation of seedless fruits, represents an alternative pathway. The fruit that grows from the ovary under unpollinated and/or unfertilised conditions is termed parthenocarpic. This trait is not only desirable to consumers but also contributes to yield stability under adverse environmental conditions. In this study, we demonstrate that overexpression of miR156h regulates parthenocarpy under unpollinated conditions via a gibberellic acid (GA)-dependent pathway. MdSPL13B was found to be involved in Mdm

A rice membrane calcium-dependent protein kinase is induced by gibberellin.

A rice (Oryza sativa) seed plasma-membrane calcium-dependent serine/threonine protein kinase (CDPK) has been partially purified. Comparing results in seeds that were treated with and without the plant hormone gibberellin (GA) for 10 min showed that rice CDPK was highly induced by GA. After separating solubilized membrane proteins by sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis, followed by renaturation, a radiolabeled phosphoprotein band of approximately 58 kD was detected, and it was apparently produced by autophosphorylation. There are five aspects of the rice CDPK that show similarity to mamm

The Role of Gibberellins in Regulation of Nitrogen Uptake and Physiological Traits in Maize Responding to Nitrogen Availability.

Modified gibberellin (GA) signaling leads to semi-dwarfism with low nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE) in crops. An understanding of GA-mediated N uptake is essential for the development of crops with improved NUE. The function of GA in modulating N uptake capacity and nitrate (NO3-) transporters (NRTs) was analyzed in the GA synthesis-deficient mutant zmga3ox grown under low (LN) and sufficient (SN) N conditions. LN significantly suppressed the production of GA1, GA3, and GA4, and the zmga3ox plants showed more sensitivity in shoots as well as LN stress. Moreover, the higher anthocyanin accumu

Cytokinin regulates flowering time in Arabidopsis thaliana through the gibberellin pathway.

Cytokinin and gibberellin are two plant hormones promoting flowering in Arabidopsis thaliana grown under short-day conditions. The activities of both hormones depend on similar signaling components, including several elements of the age pathway. However, to date, the interaction between cytokinin and gibberellin in regulating the transition to flowering remains unknown. In this work, we show that exogenous treatment of late-flowering or non-flowering cytokinin mutants by gibberellin restores their ability to flower. In contrast, the promotion of flowering by cytokinin is suppressed by mutation

Editing a gibberellin receptor gene improves yield and nitrogen fixation in soybean.

Soybean is an important source of oil, protein, and feed. However, its yield is far below that of major cereal crops. The green revolution increased the yield of cereal crops partially through high-density planting of lodging-resistant semi-dwarf varieties, but required more nitrogen fertilizers, posing an environmental threat. Genes that can improve nitrogen use efficiency need to be integrated into semi-dwarf varieties to avoid the overuse of fertilizers without the loss of dwarfism. Unlike cereal crops, soybean can assimilate atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic bacteria. Here, we created

Multiple Gibberellin Receptors Contribute to Phenotypic Stability under Changing Environments.

The pleiotropic and complex gibberellin (GA) response relies on targeted proteolysis of DELLA proteins mediated by a GA-activated GIBBERELLIN-INSENSITIVE DWARF1 (GID1) receptor. The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) genome encodes for a single DELLA protein, PROCERA (PRO), and three receptors, SlGID1a (GID1a), GID1b1, and GID1b2, that may guide specific GA responses. In this work, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) /CRISPR associated protein 9-derived gid1 mutants were generated and their effect on GA responses was studied. The gid1 triple mutant was extremely dwarf

Genetic Differentiation Associated with Fumonisin and Gibberellin Production in Japanese Fusarium fujikuroi.

Fusarium fujikuroi is a pathogenic fungus that infects rice. It produces several important mycotoxins, such as fumonisins. Fumonisin production has been detected in strains of maize, strawberry, and wheat, whereas it has not been detected in strains from rice seedlings infested with bakanae disease in Japan. We investigated the genetic relationships, pathogenicity, and resistance to a fungicide, thiophanate-methyl (TM), in 51 fumonisin-producing strains and 44 nonproducing strains. Phylogenetic analyses based on amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers and two specific genes (a co

CLE6 expression recovers gibberellin deficiency to promote shoot growth in Arabidopsis.

Small peptides act as local signals during plant development, but few studies have examined their interaction with phytohormone signaling. Here, we show that application of gibberellin (GA) to Arabidopsis shoots induces substantial accumulation of transcripts encoded by CLE6, a member of the CLAVATA/ESR-RELATED (CLE) gene family, in the root stele, followed by promotion of organ growth by CLE6 in GA-deficient plants. The long-distance effect of GA4 was demonstrated by the observation that its application to the shoot apex of the GA-deficient mutant ga3ox1/ga3ox2 rescued the short-root phenotyp

The regulatory role of gibberellin related genes DKGA2ox1 and MIR171f_3 in persimmon dwarfism.

'Nantongxiaofangshi' (Diospyros kaki Thunb., D. kaki Thunb.) is a local cultivar of persimmon with dwarf-like traits in Jiangsu, China. Closely spaced planting afforded by dwarfism is usually one of the most important ways to promote fruit cultivation and production. However, the understanding of dwarfism in D. kaki Thunb. is very limited at the molecular level, which hinders the further increase of the fruit production. In this work, a persimmon transgenic system was successfully established, and the field experiments of grafting phenotype were carried out. The results showed that D. kaki Thu

Natural variation of bioactive gibberellin levels in maize tissues across North America.

Gibberellins (GA) are plant hormones that regulate growth and development throughout the plant life cycle. While gibberellins have been extensively studied under controlled conditions for their fundamental role in plant adaptation and agronomic trait development, field-based data on their natural variation of bioactive GA levels across diverse agricultural genotypes and environments remains limited. To address this knowledge gap, we analyzed bioactive gibberellin A1 (GA1) and gibberellin A4 (GA4) in multiple maize tissues from commercial conventional maize hybrids grown in diverse field enviro

Lysine Biosynthesis Defines a Metabolic Checkpoint for Gibberellin-Mediated Growth in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Lysine represents a metabolic hub linking mitochondrial energy status with amino acid catabolism, yet its role in coordinating plant growth and development remains poorly characterised. The dapat mutant, which is deficient in L,L-diaminopimelate aminotransferase (DAPAT), exhibits severe growth inhibition associated with broad metabolic imbalance. This metabolic reprogramming is characterised by simultaneous depletion of carbohydrates (sugars and starch), and organic acids, accompanied by elevated amino acid pools, reflecting a profound disruption of carbon-nitrogen balance. These metabolic con

Fungal Diversity and Gibberellin Hormones Associated with Long Whips of Smut-Infected Sugarcanes.

Sugarcane smut, caused by the fungus Sporisorium scitamineum (Sydow), significantly affects sugarcane crops worldwide. Infected plants develop whip-like structures known as sori. Significant variations in these whip lengths are commonly observed, but the physiological and molecular differences causing these morphological differences remain poorly documented. To address this, we employed conventional microbe isolation, metagenomic, and metabolomic techniques to investigate smut-infected sugarcane stems and whips of varying lengths. Metagenomics analysis revealed a diverse fungal community in th

Crosstalk between auxin and gibberellin during stalk elongation in flowering Chinese cabbage.

Plant growth and development are tightly regulated by phytohormones. However, little is known about the interaction between auxin and gibberellin acid (GA) during flower stalk elongation and how it is directly related to organ formation. Therefore, the effects of indole acetic acid (IAA) and GA3 treatments and their interaction on flower stalk elongation in flowering Chinese cabbage were investigated. The growth of flowering Chinese cabbage is regulated by IAA and GA3, and the opposite results were observed after treatments with uniconazole (GA synthesis inhibitor) and N-1-naphthylphthalamic a

Ectopic expression of EFFECTOR OF TRANSCRIPTION perturbs gibberellin-mediated plant developmental processes.

The plant hormone gibberellin (GA) is known to modulate various aspects of plant cell differentiation and development. The current model of GA-mediated regulation is based on a de-repressible system and includes specific protein modification and degradation. HRT, a zinc finger protein from barley has been shown to have GA-dependent transcriptional repressing activity on the seed-specific alpha-amylase promoter [Raventos, D., Skriver, K., Schlein, M., Karnahl, K., Rogers, S.W., Rogers, J.C. and Mundy, J. 1998. Involvement of cortical microtubules in plastic extension regulated by gibberellin in Lemna minor root.

We aimed to analyze the rheological characteristics during elongation of the root segments in Lemna minor. The elastic component of segment elongation (EC) increased for the first 6 h, and then almost stopped. However, the plastic component of the segment elongation (PC) began to rapidly increase from 6 h onwards. Uniconazole-P, a gibberellin biosynthesis inhibitor, inhibited the total elongation of root segments (TE), and this inhibition was mainly caused by suppression of the rapid increase in the PC after 6 h. Concomitant with this inhibition, the cortical microtubule (CMT) array within roo

A single UV-C pulse modulates Gibberellin homeostasis and Plant Development in Arabidopsis.

Plants are rarely exposed to ultraviolet C (UV-C) radiation because it is absorbed by the ozone layer. Nevertheless, low doses of UV-C can induce physiological and developmental responses, although the underlying hormonal mechanisms are not well understood. We show that a single one-minute UV-C pulse (20 W/m2) is associated with temporally distinct differences in gibberellin (GA) homeostasis in Arabidopsis. At early sampling times, levels of GA12, a precursor of bioactive GAs, are lower in UV-C-treated plants compared with controls. This is accompanied by lower transcript levels of KS and KAO2

Gibberellin pathway remodeling accompanies ethylene-driven sex reversal in Cannabis sativa.

INTRODUCTION: Sex expression in Cannabis sativa is determined by XX/XY sex chromosomes but remains plastic, with ethylene inhibition inducing male flowers on XX plants and ethylene release inducing female flowers on XY plants. Although ethylene is a central regulator of this process, the contribution of the gibberellin (GA) pathway to cannabis sex reversal remains poorly defined. METHODS: We reconstructed the GA biosynthesis, regulation, and signaling pathway in C. sativa using orthology-based searches, and profiled GA-related gene expression during chemically induced sex reversal through tra

Gibberellin-mediated internode elongation for grafting and early flowering induction in Brassicaceae crops.

In Brassicaceae crops such as cabbage and turnip, which are harvested for their vegetative organs, floral induction can reduce the eating quality of these organs. Therefore, developing late-flowering varieties that are insensitive to vernalization is a key breeding objective. However, a major challenge in breeding these cultivars lies in the contradiction between the late-flowering trait and the need to induce flowering for crossing. To address this, we developed a flowering induction technique using grafting, in which gibberellin-induced elongated internodes are used as scions and grafted ont

Endogenous H2S promotes Arabidopsis flowering through the regulation of GA20ox4 in the gibberellin pathway.

Flowering time is a critical determinant of plant reproductive success and agricultural yield. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), as a signaling molecule, regulates various aspects of plant growth and development. In this study, we examined the role of endogenous H₂S in regulating flowering time in Arabidopsis. The O-acetylserine thiol lyase a1 (oasa1) mutant, which has elevated H₂S levels due to impaired OASA1 activity that catalyzes the synthesis of Cys from H2S, flowers earlier than wild type (WT). The OASA1 overexpression lines (OE-OASA1-#33/#142), characterized by reduced H₂S levels, show delayed fl
