Amelogenesis imperfecta and unusual gingival hyperplasia.

BACKGROUND: Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a group of hereditary conditions that primarily involves the defective formation and/or calcification of enamel. The association of AI with gingival enlargement-like lesions has also been reported. METHODS: This paper reports a case of a hypoplastic AI associated with unusual generalized gingival hyperplasia. RESULTS: Histological aspect of the gingival growth was characterized by a dense connective tissue with a mild mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate, calcified bodies, and islands of odontogenic epithelium. CONCLUSION: The present case represen

Generalized gingival hyperplasia occurring during pregnancy.

In this report, we present a case of generalized gingival hyperplasia related to pregnancy causing chewing, speaking, breathing and cosmetic problems. The patient was a 26-year-old woman in the fourth month of her second pregnancy, with generalized gingival hyperplasia affecting both buccal and lingual aspects of the maxilla and mandible. The hyperplastic tissues, together with mobile teeth, were excised completely; no recurrence was observed for the remainder of the pregnancy. Hormonal changes occurring during pregnancy have long been known to be associated with generalized gingival hyperplas

[Gingival hyperplasia during treatment with nifedipine].

INTRODUCTION: Nifedipine is a relatively new and increasingly used medication for treatment of all kinds of angina pectoris and arterial hypertension. The principal action of nifedipine is to inhibit the influx of extracellular calcium ions across the membranes of cardiac and vascular smooth muscle cells, without changing serum calcium concentration (1). One of the side effects of this drug is gingival hyperplasia which was first described in 1984 by Lederman (2). He noted that gingival hyperplasia is mostly marked on the labial gingiva of the upper and lower anterior teeth and appeared 1 to 2

[Gingival hyperplasia and hyper IgE syndrome].

The hyperimmunoglobulin E recurrent-infection syndrome is considered a primary immunodeficiency syndrome characterized by recurrent staphylococcal infections both cutaneous and pulmonary, chronic dermatitis, otitis and sinusitis. Our case report can be interesting for the age of the patient (39 years old), for the absence of visceral lesion and for the development of a peculiar gingival hyperplasia. The review of literature has shown that this kind of gingivitis is not usual but not extraordinary.

Multiple myeloma presenting as gingival hyperplasia.

Multiple myeloma is a malignant neoplasm that is characterized by a monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells. Oral and maxillofacial manifestations as an initial sign or symptom of multiple myeloma are rare. A 58-year-old male patient presented with generalized gingival enlargement for last 6 months. Based on clinical presentation, a diagnosis of gingival hyperplasia was made. After Phase I therapy, excisional biopsy was taken in anterior mandibular region and excised tissue was sent for histopathological examination. The histopathology report revealed a lining of stratified squamous epitheliu

Congenital generalized terminal hypertrichosis with gingival hyperplasia.

As 2 indispensable counterparts in one catalysis system, the independent reduction and oxidation reactions require synergetic regulation for cooperatively promoting redox efficiency. Despite the current success in promoting the catalytic efficiency of half reduction or oxidation reactions, the lack of redox integration leads to low energy efficiency and unsatisfied catalytic performance. Here, we exploit an emerging photoredox catalysis system by combining the reactions of nitrate reduction for ammonia synthesis and formaldehyde oxidation for formic acid production, in which superior photoredo

Rare phenomena of tacrolimus-induced gingival hyperplasia.

In the modern world, men and women are very much concerned about their esthetic appearance. The gingival perspective of esthetics is more often concerned with the soft tissue envelope surrounding the teeth. Gingival enlargement/overgrowth is numerous in nature and often poses a clinical challenge by altering the function, resulting in poor oral health of an individual. Tacrolimus, an immunosuppressive drug, has been broadly used for organ-transplant rejection. It results in much less severe hypertension, hypertrichosis and gingival overgrowth compared to cyclosporine and calcium channel blocke

Langerhans cells in human chronic gingivitis and phenytoin-induced gingival hyperplasia.

Langerhans cell numbers in oral epithelium increase as dental plaque accumulates. The anti-convulsant drug phenytoin predisposes to gingival hyperplasia in certain patients who take this medication for epilepsy and who also have poor oral hygiene. In this study 7 patients with phenytoin-induced gingival hyperplasia were compared with 5 subjects with chronic marginal gingivitis. On initial examination and on completion of the hygiene phase of periodontal therapy (a period ranging from 3.0 to 4.25 months), clinical indices of plaque and gingivitis were recorded and biopsies were taken from the l

Clinical and aetiological factors in spongiotic gingival hyperplasia.

BACKGROUND: Localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia (LJSGH) is a rare gingival lesion characterized by exuberant epithelial proliferation. Its etiology remains unclear, with few studies exploring its clinical and histopathological features. This retrospective study aimed to analyze the demographic, clinical, and etiological characteristics of LJSGH across 13 diagnostic centers in Latin America. METHODS: Data were extracted from clinical records, including variables such as age, sex, clinical phenotype, anatomical site, comorbidities, potential triggering factors, and therapeutic ap

Localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia: a case report.

Localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia (LJSGH) is a kind of gingival hyperplasia with unique pathological manifestations. Its clinical manifestations are atypical, and the etiology and pathogenesis are unclear. No case report was reported in China. The diagnosis of this disease mainly relies on pathological testing, and recurrence may occur after treatment. The best treatment method still lacks medical evidence. This paper reports a case of LJSGH in a teenager and summarizes its clinical, pathological, and treatment through literature review. This work provides a reference for the

Ultrastructural features of cyclosporine A-induced gingival hyperplasia.

The present work collected data on the ultrastructural features of the attached gingiva in kidney transplant patients who showed gingival hyperplasia following cyclosporin A (Cy A) treatment. Ultrastructural examination was carried out on biopsies of attached gingiva obtained from 8 male patients (30 to 60 years old) undergoing treatment at the Dental Clinic of the University of Ferrara. The data showed that, although many fibroblasts are present in Cy A-induced hyperplasia, there is a particular abundance of amorphous substance compared to fibrous, as well as marked plasma cell infiltration.

[3 cases of gingival hyperplasia during nifedipine therapy].

The authors report the cases of three male patients, aged 36, 54 and 52 years, who developed gingival hypertrophy during treatment with nifedipine at a dose of 40 mg/daily. Hypertrophy was the same as that observed in patients treated with anti-convulsive or cytostatic drugs, and may probably be due to interference with calcium ions and local factors. Full recovery was achieved by suspending nifedipine treatment in all patients.
